Zhang Shuzhen was the only one at home, and she was serving rice from the pot.
Hearing footsteps, Zhang Shuzhen looked towards the door and saw her eldest son, so she smiled.
"Hey, you're back? How was it? Finished the meeting?"
Before leaving home, Sheng Xiping told his family that he was going to a meeting, which is why Zhang Shuzhen asked that question.
"Okay, come back as soon as you're done. Mom, let me take it."
Sheng Xiping stepped forward, picked up the rice bowl, and carried it into the house. Then, he brought the dishes and other food to the table.
We had just finished cleaning up the food when we heard a commotion outside.
When Sheng Xiping came out of the house, he saw Zhou Qinglan grabbing Sheng Xinhua's ear with one hand and Sheng Xinyu's collar with the other, scolding him as she walked.
"Oh, what happened?" Sheng Xiping saw this and hurriedly stepped forward, taking the child from him and asking.
"Look at the two of them, what a mess they've made!" Zhou Qinglan said angrily, pointing at her two sons.
Sheng Xiping looked down and, good heavens, the two children were covered in mud from head to toe, not to mention their clothes, which were completely unrecognizable.
Anyone who didn't know better would think the two kids had just been rolling around in the mud. "What were you doing? How did you get like this?"
Sheng Xiping took a deep breath, suppressing the urge to punch someone, and asked through gritted teeth.
"Brother, I wasn't watching them for a moment, and they went to play in the mud." Sheng Xitai said weakly from behind Zhou Qinglan.
During the holiday, children of all ages in the forest farm were running wild outside.
Sheng Xitai and Chen Feng are too old to play with Sheng Xinhua and the others, so Sheng Xinhua is allowed to play with a few other children his own age.
I don't know who it was, but they said they wanted to make mud dolls, so Sheng Xinhua joined them in mixing mud.
Sheng Xinyu is still young and doesn't understand anything. He just does whatever his brother does.
The place where they played was the grounds of Pan Fusheng's new house.
Pan Fusheng got a job last year, and then someone introduced him to a potential partner. They plan to get married at the end of this year.
The Pan family's house was small, so they got a plot of land from the forest farm to build a house.
The house has been built, but a large pile of yellow soil that was prepared at the time is still left near the site.
The children then went to the mound and collected yellow soil, water, and mud.
What child doesn't love mud and water? And with no adults watching, they'll go wild playing like crazy—what good will that do?
When Sheng Xitai and Chen Feng returned from catching fish and crayfish, they knew they were doomed.
So they quickly led the two children back, and on the way they met Zhou Qinglan and Sheng Yunfang, the three of them.
When Zhou Qinglan saw that the two naughty children were covered in mud like monkeys, she was furious. She slapped Sheng Xinhua and then carried the children inside.
“You guys are just being naughty all the time. Sheng Xinhua, you’d better get back to the preschool class in the fall. If you stay home and cause trouble again, I’ll beat you to death.”
Sheng Xiping glared at his son a few times in anger, then picked up the two mud-covered monkeys, one in each hand, and carried them into the house.
They stripped off their clothes, leaving them shirtless except for their underwear. Then they fetched water, washed their hair, wiped their faces, and washed their hands.
The two children were washed clean and presentable after four basins of water.
Before they could even finish tidying up, Sheng Liancheng, Sheng Xi'an, and Sheng Xikang, the three of them, returned.
"What happened? Why is the child completely naked? Quickly put clothes on the child."
When Sheng Liancheng entered the room, he was stunned to see that his two grandsons were naked except for their underwear.
Even though it's hot in August, we can't let the kids go around naked.
"They went to mix mud, and got covered in mud from head to toe. How were they supposed to wash themselves without taking off their clothes?"
Zhang Shuzhen didn't protect her grandsons this time either. These two little rascals are too unruly; they need to be taught a lesson.
"Girls are so much easier to manage. Look at Xiaoyue, she goes out to play with them just the same, and she doesn't have a single thing on her."
Zhang Shuzhen glanced at the well-behaved little girl over there, her eyes filled with envy.
"Absolutely! These two rascals are driving me crazy every day. If we had two daughters, they would be so obedient and well-behaved."
Zhou Qinglan muttered to herself as she dressed the child.
After the two children finished getting ready, the whole family returned home, so everyone washed their hands and went inside to eat.
While eating, Sheng Liancheng couldn't help but inquire about the meeting that Sheng Xiping had attended.
Upon hearing that Sheng Xiping had given a report on stage and received praise from the leaders, Sheng Liancheng and Zhang Shuzhen were overjoyed.
Of the six children in the family, the second and third have been admitted to university, and the fourth and fifth will take the college entrance examination next year. Regardless of whether they pass or not, at least they will graduate from high school.
Needless to say, the youngest son's education level is determined by the family's financial support.
Only Sheng Xiping, after graduating from junior high school, stopped studying and went to the mountains to become an educated youth. Over the years, he has helped his family and supported his younger siblings. The eldest son is the one who has suffered the most.
Now, seeing their eldest son rise from a worker to a cadre, and even give a report at such an important meeting, receiving praise from the leadership, Sheng Liancheng and his wife are truly gratified.
They asked for nothing more than for their eldest son to be able to hold onto his position as the factory manager, and they would be content.
"Oh, right, Dad, I promised to help a few forestry bureaus by exchanging timber for apples."
