Chapter 455 Meeting Gift

When Sheng Lianyi learned that his younger brother, sister-in-law, and nephew had returned, he hurriedly came out to greet them and said as soon as they met.

"Brother, when I got back to the forest farm and heard that you were seriously ill, I rushed back home. I didn't even have time to write home. How is our brother?"

Upon seeing his elder brother, Sheng Liancheng eagerly inquired about their father's situation.

"Oh no, our eldest son can't get out of bed anymore. The doctor said he's just going to have to endure the days." Sheng Lianyi sighed, tears welling up in his eyes.

The elderly are getting old, and this day will come sooner or later, but as children, even if we are mentally prepared, we still can't accept it.

Sheng Liancheng rushed into the house, taking three steps at a time.

When he saw his elderly father lying on the kang (a heated brick bed), he looked much thinner and more haggard than when he had returned a few years ago, and he seemed to have lost his spirit.

"Big brother, big brother, it's me, Erxiao'er! I'm back! Big brother, open your eyes and look at me!" Sheng Liancheng rushed to the front of the kang (a heated brick bed) and choked out.

"Old man, open your eyes and look! It's our second son back, leading Shuzhen and Xiping."

Compared to before, Sheng Han looked much more haggard. She slowly moved to her husband's side and spoke loudly in Sheng Guangyao's ear.

It's unclear whether the old man sensed his children and grandchildren returning or if the old woman's shout was effective.

Sheng Guangyao, who was drowsy on the kang, slowly opened his eyes. His eyes were unfocused and he just stared blankly at the ceiling.

"Big brother, it's me, Erxiao'er. Big brother, look at me."

Seeing his father like this, Sheng Liancheng was overcome with grief, stepped forward, grasped his father's hand, and choked out.

Sheng Guangyao, lying on the kang (heated brick bed), opened his mouth and made a soft sound, "Second son?"

"Yes, it's me, it's Erxiao'er who's back." Sheng Liancheng sat on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), holding his father's withered hand, and said with tears in his eyes.

Sheng Guangyao nodded. "Second son is back? Good, good."

The voice was still weak, and it was clear that the old man was truly exhausted and nearing his end.

"Brother, has our grandpa seen a doctor? Did he go to the hospital?" Sheng Xiping asked Sheng Xizheng beside him in a low voice.

"The doctor in our village said that going to the hospital won't help with Grandpa's illness," Sheng Xizheng sighed.

Sheng Guangyao is almost eighty years old. He suffered a lot in his early years, and his health has long since deteriorated. It is not easy for him to have reached this age.

When the old man was lucid, he said that there was no need to waste money at the hospital; he just wanted to leave peacefully on this kang (heated brick bed).

"Brother, where is the village doctor? I brought some ginseng and other tonics. I'll ask the doctor if it's okay for Grandpa to take some?"

Seeing his grandfather like this, Sheng Xiping felt heartbroken.

He didn't know if the ginseng would work, but even if it could improve his grandfather's spirits, it would make him feel better.

Upon hearing this, Sheng Xizheng quickly sent someone to fetch the doctor.

Before long, a person carrying a medicine box entered the room. Sheng Xiping quickly went over and talked to the person, asking about the old man's specific condition, what medicine he was taking, and whether he could take ginseng.

"To be honest with you, ginseng might not be effective at this time. At most, it will make the old man feel more comfortable and in better spirits."

Anyway, if you have some on hand, it won't hurt to use a little, just for peace of mind.

"If you don't have it, don't even think about it. That medicine is quite expensive and hard to find. You can probably get it in the county, but I certainly don't have it here," the other person said.

Upon hearing this, Sheng Xiping nodded. As long as the food wouldn't worsen his condition, it was fine; at least they had done their best.

So he inquired about other tonics and whether they could be used. Anyway, he had brought a lot of things with him on this trip, so he gave the old man the ones that were usable.

This left the doctor speechless. He nodded repeatedly and said it was usable.

So, Sheng Xiping took out the red ginseng and deer antler he had brought and gave them to Sheng Xizheng's wife, asking her to find a way to slice them, stew them into soup, and give them to the old man.

By this point, everyone understood that the old man was just getting through the days.

But Sheng Xiping's good intentions, bringing out so many precious tonic herbs, gave everyone a glimmer of hope.

What if it might be of some use? Even if it only delays things for a few days, allowing the old man to stay a little longer, it would be a way for them to show their filial piety.

So, with Zhang Shuzhen's help, Sheng Xizheng's wife stewed some soup and fed it to the old man.

Ginseng itself has the effect of restoring yang and rescuing from collapse. When combined with deer antler, it can greatly replenish vital energy, invigorate the spleen and lungs, promote the production of body fluids and nourish blood, and tonify the heart and kidneys.

Anyway, after drinking a few times, Sheng Guangyao's spirits were noticeably better than before, and he was no longer so drowsy and sleepy.

I'm awake for much longer during the day, and I seem to have more energy when I speak.

As a result, a glimmer of hope arose in everyone's hearts, that perhaps the old man could pull through this ordeal.

Sheng Liancheng was overjoyed and quietly asked Sheng Xiping how much of the ginseng and deer antler supplements he had brought was left and how long they would last.

"Dad, there's still some stuff left, enough for my grandpa for ten days to half a month."

If that's not enough, I'll call home right now and ask my older brother to help me get some more.

The red ginseng was sourced from Dajianchang, and there wasn't much of it—only two jin in total, half of which was given to the Wu family.

In the past two years, Sheng Xiping has always been away from home and has not had the opportunity to go hunting in the mountains. The deer antlers were sent back by Hua Hua before. Since the family is not short of money, they did not sell them and kept them.

There weren't many, just a pair of top-quality two-pronged antlers. One of them was given to the Wu family, and this one was brought over.

"Forget it, these things are hard to find, don't make things difficult for Yujiang." Sheng Liancheng shook his head.

Having worked in the forest farm for so many years, and with his son being a skilled hunter, what doesn't Sheng Liancheng understand?
