Chapter Forty-Seven: Going Up the Mountain Together

"Dad, go see Uncle Wang tonight and tell him to stop the school from causing trouble."

When Sheng Xiping learned the whole story, he was speechless.

The school's original intention was good, but it went awry in practice.

To earn praise, the children dug holes in doors and dug tunnels to find scrap metal.

But we already collected all the scrap metal last year, so where are we going to find much scrap metal this year? We'll have to find another way, won't we?

Upon hearing this, Sheng Liancheng quickly stubbed out his cigarette, got up, and left.

Needless to say, this was definitely a trip to the stadium to report the situation to Wang Jiachuan and discuss how to handle the matter.

"Mom, next time you discipline the child, ask him why first. Don't just hit him without asking anything."

Sheng Xiping looked at his mother with a helpless expression.

Parents these days seem to have this problem: regardless of whether the child is right or wrong, as long as someone complains, they must beat their own child first.

Even after figuring out the whole story and realizing that the child has been wronged, they can't bring themselves to admit it and have to stubbornly insist that it was all for the child's good.

"Then your dad came back and said that they went to steal iron and were caught."

"If I don't beat them up, why would I let them cause a huge disaster?"

Zhang Shuzhen felt embarrassed after being scolded by her eldest son, so she threw the feather duster on the kang (a heated brick bed) and went out to cook.

"You guys are the same. When Mom hits you, do you just stand there and take the beating?"

Why don't you guys run away? Do you have to take a few more hits to feel good?

With his parents gone, Sheng Xiping looked at his younger siblings and sighed helplessly.

"Sixth Brother, come here, let me see where you got hit?"

Sheng Xiping waved to his sixth brother, Sheng Xitai, who was holding back his tears, immediately rushed into his brother's arms.

"I was hit on the back, it hurts."

Actually, Zhang Shuzhen didn't hit him that hard, and Sheng Xitai was used to being beaten, so he didn't think much of it.

But in front of her older brother, she had to act cute.

"You, a little kid, are following your second brother and causing trouble? I bet you've gotten beaten up a lot." Sheng Xiping was speechless.

Only students in third grade and above have to pay for scrap metal. Sheng Xitai is only in first grade, so he doesn't need to pay at all. Why does he have to join in the fun?

"My second brother asked me to help keep watch," Sheng Xitai said, looking up at his eldest brother.

"Second brother, you've got some serious ideas to have a glutton keep watch for you."

Sheng Xiping couldn't help but chuckle.

"Are you all on summer vacation? Do you have a lot of homework?"

Why don't you two come up the mountain with me? It'll save you from staying home all day and causing trouble."

Gastrodia elata has only been unearthed for about twenty days, and there are only a few days left, so it would be good to harvest as much as possible.

The second and third children weren't home, Yunfang and Yunfei were girls, and the sixth child was too young to cause any trouble.

If these two older boys were to lead the way, and they were to get mixed up with other people's teenage boys, I really don't know what kind of trouble they might get into.

These days, kids are wild. They're never home during holidays, running all over the mountains and fields. What if they get into some kind of danger?

Upon hearing his elder brother's words, Sheng Xikang immediately perked up.

"Brother, why don't you take us up the mountain to hunt?"

If we could hunt a wild boar or a bear or something, we'd have meat to eat again.

Sheng Xiping's face darkened, and he glared at his third brother.

"Stop dreaming. How old are you? You're already thinking about going into the mountains to hunt? Do you think that's fun?"

"Someone like you, let alone a black bear, even a wild boar could knock you flying into the air with one slap."

Despite Sheng Xiping's skill in hunting, he didn't want his younger brothers to learn it, as it was too arduous and dangerous.

With him around, the younger brothers can focus on their studies and help with chores around the house during holidays.

It's best to avoid getting involved in dangerous activities like hunting.

“My older brother went hunting in the mountains with Uncle Liu when he was only thirteen. I’m fifteen now, two years older than him back then.”

Sheng Xikang was unconvinced, feeling that his older brother was looking down on him.

"What was our family like back then? What is our family like now? Can you compare to me?" Sheng Xiping snorted.

At that time, Sheng Liancheng was stationed on the mountain year-round, and Zhang Shuzhen had two daughters to take care of, so she couldn't go to the family team to work and earn money.

The whole family relied on Sheng Liancheng's salary to make ends meet, and they also had to send money back to their hometown from time to time. Life was really tough for them.

Sheng Xiping was precocious and wild, fearless of anything, so he followed his master up the mountain.

I can't say about anything else, but at least getting some meat can improve the family's life.

The Sheng family's current conditions are not exactly good, but they have no problem having enough to eat.

He certainly didn't want his younger brothers to suffer as much as he had.

"Besides, what's the point of hunting in the middle of summer? That's for autumn and winter."

Sheng Xiping realized that his tone had been too harsh, so he softened his attitude.

"The older generation had specific rules for hunting: they didn't hunt in spring and summer, but only in autumn and winter."

These are the rules; they cannot be broken arbitrarily.

Rules are rigid, but people are flexible; this cannot be generalized. However, it is sufficient to fool Sheng Xikang.

As they were talking, Sheng Liancheng returned. "I told your Uncle Wang, and he said he'd go see the principal tonight and have a good talk with him."

With that said, the matter of handing over scrap metal is basically settled.

Actually, as long as there is no more scrap metal everywhere in the site, that's enough; there's really no need to set a quota.

In order to reach that amount, the child would have to come up with another idea, wouldn't they?

The minor incident passed quickly, and the next morning, Sheng Xiping led his two younger brothers up the mountain to dig for Gastrodia elata around the work area on the third branch line.
