Chapter 476 Home is still the best
Sheng Yunfang also took a holiday and traveled to the capital, where the family reunited.
On the 25th, Sheng Liancheng and his wife, along with their son and daughter, boarded the train back to Northeast China.
At noon on the 27th, the group returned to Songjiang River.
"Wow, big brother, the new house is really beautiful, so grand!" Sheng Xitai exclaimed as soon as he arrived at the Sheng family's gate, looking at the row of houses in front of him.
Seven neat brick and tile houses, with red tiles on the roof and ripped stone walls.
The construction team was very clever, using light green, white, and pink water-washed stone and slender mirror strips to create geometric patterns on the wall.
It avoids the monotony of a large wall covered in a single color, while also being less flashy.
Around the courtyard is a brick wall with a cement finish, more than a meter high, with two layers of patterned bricks on top, and many sharp shards of glass stuck in the cement at the top of the wall.
There were two large iron doors painted in dark red, and one of them had a small door, about the size of an ordinary house door.
For daily entry and exit, just use the side gate; if you're driving, just leave the main gate wide open.
After entering, walk along the cement block-paved passageway from the backyard to the frontyard.
There are seven rooms. The westernmost room has a door, and the middle room has a door.
"The room at the west end is a garage and boiler room. Our house spans eight meters from north to south, which is just right to separate the two areas. The north side is for parking, and the south side is for the boiler room."
As they walked, Sheng Xiping introduced the place to his parents. "Dad, Mom, this way, the main entrance is in the middle."
As they were talking, before everyone could even enter the room, the door suddenly opened, and Sheng Xinhua and a few others ran out of the room.
"Grandpa, Grandma!" The four children rushed over happily and hugged Sheng Liancheng and his wife.
"Hey, what are you doing out here in this freezing weather? Come on, come inside, don't get cold."
Upon seeing this, Sheng Liancheng and Zhang Shuzhen quickly picked up their two granddaughters, one each, and hurried into the house.
The middle room is divided into north and south sections. Inside is the kitchen, and outside are items such as a refrigerator, washing machine, etc.
Aunt Li was busy in the kitchen when she heard everyone come in, so she came out with a shovel in her hand.
"Hey, Sheng brothers, your wife is back? Come on in and warm up, dinner will be ready soon, you must be hungry after your journey."
"Sister-in-law, you don't need to bother. We just grabbed a bite in the car, so we're not too hungry," Zhang Shuzhen said with a smile as she untied her scarf.
"Ugh, food on the train is dry and not even hot, I can't get enough to eat."
"I've stewed pork ribs with pickled cabbage. You can try it in a bit. Our pickled cabbage is especially good this year." Aunt Li smiled and went back to the kitchen to get busy.
"The two rooms at the east end are connected, forming a large living room with an ensuite room inside. The two rooms at the west end are separated, also ensuite rooms."
Sheng Xiping pushed open the door to the east room and led everyone inside.
The two rooms in the east wing are open-plan, without any partition walls, making the room feel very spacious.
A row of sofas is placed under the south-facing window, and a coffee table is placed in front of the sofas.
To the north is a half-partition wall that separates the two rooms. Next to the outer room, there is a kang (a heated brick bed) on the north side, with furniture such as a kangqin (a type of zither) placed at the end of the kang.
The room next to the east wall inside had a row of modular furniture and a bed.
The furniture set was designed by Sheng Xiping and made by a carpenter, mainly because his own furniture factory was not yet completed, so he had to find someone else to make it.
The furniture is alright, not as beautiful as Sheng Xiping had imagined, but of course, it's already the best furniture available right now.
The color TV was placed on the cabinet, just like in other households, and it was covered with a white polyester embroidered TV cover.
The red telephone sits in one of the compartments of the modular furniture, covered with a white dacron embroidered cloth.
"Oh dear, you've combined these two rooms, it's so spacious inside. How much firewood will you have to burn to keep it warm?"
Sheng Liancheng looked around the house. Everything was quite nice, but the house was too big, and heating it was a real problem.
"It's alright, Dad. There are plenty of heating systems in the house, and the boiler I installed is also large."
Besides, there's an underfloor heating system under the living room; it's too cold. We can just turn it on and heat it up.
It's just that underfloor heating didn't exist back then, otherwise Sheng Xiping would have installed it in his new house.
Upon hearing this, Sheng Liancheng nodded, "No wonder, it's so cold outside, but your room is quite warm."
"Great! This house is nicely furnished. With so many kids in the family, and Xinhua and Xinyu growing up, a bigger house makes it more comfortable."
Just as Sheng Xiping said, the room was indeed quite warm, with both central heating and underfloor heating.
After everyone entered the house, they took off their coats, hats, and gloves. Sheng Xitai and his two older sisters wandered around the east and west rooms, looking at everything.
“Our brother’s house is really nice. The terrazzo floor is beautiful, the windowsill looks good, and the windows are big and bright.”
Sheng Xitai walked around each room and found them all to be quite nice.
"Brother, if you had cleaned the house a couple of years earlier, I could have lived here for at least a year or two."
"Well, that's great. I'm going to school and squeezing into the dorms, while you've built this big house." Sheng Xitai complained as he returned to the east room after wandering around.
Everyone in the room was taken aback when they heard this, and then they all laughed.
"You don't need to envy me. After you graduate and get a job, I'll pay for your house. You can decorate it however you want, and I guarantee you'll be satisfied, okay?"
Sheng Xiping was overjoyed and quickly promised. He had already bought houses for his second and third sons' weddings, so he wouldn't be short of money for his sixth son.
"Isn't this a bad idea?" Sheng Xitai scratched his head.
"You said you'd buy me a car, and buying me a house would be too expensive. Forget it, I'll just find a way to earn money to buy a house myself, and it'll be fine for you to buy me a car."
