Boys are tough, and besides, Sheng Xiping didn't really hit them hard. Sheng Xinhua and Sheng Xinyu didn't even realize it and thought their father was just playing around with them.
"Dad, I finished my homework a long time ago. Grandma said I'm not allowed to go out to play until I finish my homework."
Although Zhang Shuzhen was not very educated, she attached great importance to her children's education.
She doesn't understand other things, but she definitely won't let her child go out to play until he finishes his homework.
“You can’t just go out and write all the time after you’ve finished writing. Stay home and help your grandma with some chores. You’re all grown up now, you should have some sense.”
Sheng Xiping lightened his pace and quickly finished shoveling the snow for the children.
"Okay, come inside and take off your cotton-padded coat."
The two rascals dashed into the inner room, took off their cotton-padded coats and shoes, and went straight to the kang (heated brick bed) to sit next to their two younger sisters.
"Call me brother." Sheng Xinhua looked at his two identical sisters and couldn't quite tell who was who.
Sheng Xinyue and Sheng Xinqi were playing with dolls on the kang (a heated brick bed) when Sheng Xinhua suddenly came over, startling the two girls.
They hadn't seen their brother in a long time, and were a little taken aback, only tilting their heads to look at Sheng Xinhua and Sheng Xinyu.
Seeing this, Zhou Qinglan felt a pang of pain in her heart. A once happy family had been divided into several places, leaving the younger sister not recognizing her older brother and the older brother not loving his younger sister.
"Yueyue, Qiqi, those are your brothers, Xinhua and Xinyu. Quickly greet them, call them brothers."
Zhou Qinglan came over, hugged her two daughters, and taught them to call him "brother".
The two girls were very obedient and called out "brother" sweetly.
The little girl's sweet and soft "Brother!" instantly won over the hearts of the brothers, making Sheng Xinhua and Sheng Xinyu so happy that they each hugged one of their little sisters and kissed her.
"Sweetie, let me get you some toys." After saying that, Sheng Xinhua went to the north kang (a heated brick bed) and took out a whole bunch of toys from the drawer.
Some of these were bought by Sheng Xiping, and others were brought back by Chen Feng for his two younger brothers every summer when he came back.
"This is fun, it bounces after it's wound up."
Sheng Xinyu snatched a tin frog, wound it up a few times, and placed it on the kang (a heated brick bed). The frog then jumped forward.
The two girls are still young, and they play with dolls most of the time. They've never seen a wind-up toy like this before.
The two girls stared wide-eyed at the hopping frog. When the frog finally stopped hopping, the two girls pointed at it and called it "brother."
Sheng Xinhua and Sheng Xinyu were very pleased with themselves. They brought over a bunch of toys and taught their younger sisters how to play with them one by one.
Kids, whether they're girls or boys, always seem to share a lot of common interests.
The two girls were overjoyed, hugging their brother's neck and directing him to show them all the toys.
The bond of blood is truly wondrous; even though they don't spend much time together normally, the children quickly became familiar with each other and had a wonderful time.
Seeing this, Zhou Qinglan felt much relieved. She asked Sheng Xiping to watch the children while she went to the kitchen to help out.
Around 5:30, the forestry team members took the shuttle bus down the mountain.
Because tomorrow is the Little New Year, the entire work team is on holiday. Sheng Liancheng, who had been watching the generator depot on the mountain for quite a while, also carried his luggage down the mountain and went home.
As soon as Sheng Liancheng entered the house, his daughter and son surrounded him. Sheng Xitai quickly took the luggage and helped Sheng Liancheng into the house.
Over there, Zhang Shuzhen also called to her daughter-in-law and daughter to quickly set the table and clear away the food, preparing for dinner.
Sheng Liancheng sat down on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), but he was so cold that he didn't dare to get too close to his two granddaughters.
He just smiled and looked at the children who were having a great time playing on the edge of the kang (heated brick bed), then looked at Sheng Xiping.
"You've made quite a stir since you came back this time. I've been up on the mountain, and I've heard people talking about you all day long."
The father was naturally happy that his son was capable, but Sheng Liancheng was also a little worried. Would his eldest son's high profile attract the envy of others?
“Dad, I didn’t expect it to turn out like this. We just borrowed a car from the transportation department to send things back, but these people from the forest farm brag about it as if I drove a whole truckload of stuff back myself.”
Sheng Xiping scratched his head and said helplessly.
"Forget it, just be more careful in the future, and don't be too high-profile. Not everyone in the forest farm is a good person; there are quite a few envious people."
Now that you're not working and don't have a government job to protect you, it's easier for others to mess with you. You still need to be careful in everything you do.
Sheng Liancheng had experienced too much and had always been cautious throughout his life, yet he did not forget to advise his son even now.
"Yes, yes, Dad, I understand, don't worry."
Sheng Xiping didn't argue with his father. His parents meant well, and there was no need to argue about these things during the New Year.
As they were talking, the food was all cleared away. Zhang Shuzhen urged Sheng Liancheng to wash his hands and face, and then the family sat around the table and ate a lively meal.
Dinner was quite simple: a pot of pork bone stew with sauerkraut, and a pot of pork belly, cabbage, and frozen tofu.
Zhang Shuzhen also roasted two chilies on the stove, crushed them, poured hot oil over them, and fried them into a bowl of chili oil.
Anyone who likes spicy food can serve themselves a bowl, with soup and vegetables, add a spoonful of chili oil, and eat a hot bowl to warm up their whole body.
There was a lot of meat on the big bone, and after stewing it in the pot for an afternoon, the meat was already very tender.
Zhang Shuzhen picked out two pieces of meat with more meat for each of the children's bowls, letting them eat as much as they wanted.
The two little girls, Sheng Xinyue and Sheng Xinqi, got their mouths and hands covered in oil from chewing, but everyone ignored them and let them do as they pleased, saying they would change their clothes later.
Children need to be taught to do things themselves; you can't always feed them, otherwise they'll develop a dependency and won't eat unless you feed them.
Adults are all busy, who has the time for that?
