Chapter Thirty-Two: Master and Mistress

The Qin family has no sons, only one daughter, Qin Qiuyan.

She learned martial arts, shooting, and hunting from her father from a young age.

When Qin Sanpao was alive, his daughters were generally not allowed to go up the mountain.

With Qin Sanpao gone, the family lost its source of income, so Qin Qiuyan had no choice but to go into the mountains to hunt for a living.

Once, Qin Qiuyan went hunting in the mountains and happened to see an injured fire fox.

Just as they were about to fight, Liu Changde ran over from a distance and said that he had followed the fox all the way here, and told Qin Qiuyan not to try to take it from him.

With Qin Qiuyan's fiery temper, how could she possibly tolerate Liu Changde?

He immediately started arguing with Liu Changde, saying that wild animals in the mountains belong to whoever sees them.

While the two were arguing, the injured fire fox seized the opportunity to run away.

This displeased Liu Changde.

He chased the fox for dozens of miles, and just when he was about to catch it, Qin Qiuyan interfered, and the fox escaped.

Enraged, Liu Changde demanded that Qin Qiuyan compensate him for the fox. Qin Qiuyan then mocked Liu Changde for his poor hunting skills, saying he couldn't even catch a fox.

The two men got carried away with their conversation and started making a bet to see who could catch the fox.

And so, the man and woman wandered around in the mountains for most of the day, chasing the fire fox.

They still couldn't find it by nightfall, so the two of them had no choice but to camp in the mountains.

That very night, the two encountered a pack of wolves.

Fortunately, Liu Changde was a skilled marksman, and Qin Qiuyan was familiar with the nature of the prey. The two worked together seamlessly and finally wiped out the entire pack of wolves. The next day, they returned down the mountain with a bountiful harvest.

From then on, whenever Liu Changde went hunting in the mountains, he would head towards the Dajianchang area. Qin Qiuyan didn't know if it was intentional or unintentional, but she would always run into Liu Changde.

The two went hunting together, and since they couldn't make it back in time for the night, they stayed overnight in the mountains.

When a man and a woman are always together like this, how can things not go wrong? Not long after, Qin Qiuyan became pregnant.

Liu Changde, a former soldier, wasn't very good at farming, but he was quite skilled at hunting in the mountains.

This large alkali field is deep in the mountains and forests, with many wild animals, making it better than the one in Donggang.

Liu Changde moved here with his mother, married Qin Qiuyan, and started living together.

Over the years of their marriage, the couple had four sons.

The eldest son is now the production team leader, the second son is the militia platoon leader. Both of them are married and have children. The third son joined the army, and the fourth son is studying in Donggang.

Although Liu Changde didn't become a high-ranking official, he was capable enough to serve as the brigade secretary for many years.

A few years ago, when the situation was not good, he took the initiative to step down and go up the mountain to look after ginseng, which helped him avoid some disputes.

Now that things have settled down a bit, the old man has come down the mountain again to help take care of his grandson and such. Anyway, life is pretty good.

The elderly couple are both quite skilled, and even now that they're older, they don't stay idle. They get up early to practice martial arts, which they consider a form of exercise.

As for Qin Qiuyan beating Liu Changde, it was simply that Liu Changde was letting her have her way.

After all, there are some differences in physical strength between men and women, especially at this age, how could Qin Qiuyan still beat Liu Changde?

Sheng Xiping knew, of course, that he was just joking.

Qin Qiuyan laughed when she heard this, "Alright, with Xiping pleading for you, I'll give you two fewer punches tomorrow morning."

After he finished speaking, everyone burst into laughter.

Just then, Liu Yujiang, the eldest son of the Liu family, and Liu Yuhe, the second son, probably heard the commotion in the front yard and came over from the back yard.

"Oh, it's Xiping! I haven't seen you in a while."

Liu Yujiang is twenty-six, and Liu Yuhe is twenty-four, not much different from Sheng Xiping.

In previous years, they would go hunting in the mountains together, and they had a very good relationship.

In his previous life, Sheng Xiping came out of prison without a job. At first, the Liu brothers took him along, helping him with things like hunting, tending ginseng, and planting ginseng.

Things gradually improved, and with some money in hand, I was able to take on the forest farm's outsourced projects.

"Big brother, second brother, I thought you had both gone to the team."

Upon seeing the Liu brothers, Sheng Xiping got up from the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and nodded to them in greeting.

“Where are we going? It rained heavily last night, and the fields are all soaked. We can’t go in to work.”

I've been incredibly busy lately, and I finally got a day off.

Liu Yujiang waved his hand and pressed Sheng Xiping's shoulder to make him sit down.

"Brother, how are you doing these days? I heard that some new educated youth have come to your forest farm."

"Stealing chickens, dogs, fighting, and brawling—they're not doing anything good!"

As the saying goes, good news doesn't travel far, but bad news travels a thousand miles.

Among the young people from Songjianghe, some were already troublemakers.

Conditions at the forest farm were harsh, but those of the educated youth suffered even more.

These people, having gone without meat for a long time, were craving it terribly, so they went to catch the ducks and chickens raised on this side of the alkali field, and then cooked and ate them when they got back.

If it happens once or twice, people might just let it go.

Over time, mistakes are inevitable.

A few days ago, someone went to catch ducks and was spotted by farmers from the Dajianchang area. They chased after him for a long time and even lost their shoes in the process.

Later, the person took the shoes and found the person in charge of the forest farm.

Because of this, Sheng Xiping almost got caught up in the mess.

So when this matter is brought up, Sheng Xiping can't help but smile wryly.

"Yes, those guys are all children of cadres. They came to the forest farm just to coast along and never thought about working properly."

Old Hu from our family team gets a headache just thinking about those people.

There was nothing we could do; we'd already been assigned here, and there was no going back.

If it wasn't brought up, Sheng Xiping would forget about it, but once it was, a sudden inspiration seemed to flash through his mind.

"Well, that's true. They're all like this. We'll deal with them slowly."

When these matters are brought up, Liu Yujiang is also overwhelmed with problems.

"Boss, Xiping rarely comes all this way, so let's not talk about those troublesome things."

Go tell your wife to cook something nice for lunch today and have Xiping eat at home.

"Since we don't have anything planned today, let's all get together and have a couple of drinks."

Liu Changde waved his hand impatiently and instructed his eldest son to prepare lunch.

"Okay, Dad." Liu Yujiang readily agreed and got up to go to the backyard to greet his wife.

"Xiping, sit here for a while, I'll call your sister-in-law."

The Liu family's house consisted of two courtyards, one in the front and one in the back. The back courtyard was newly built for Liu Yujiang and Liu Yuhe's wedding, while the front courtyard housed Liu Changde and his wife, along with their third and fourth sons.

"Oh, Master, then I won't stand on ceremony. I'll have a good drink with you at noon today."

Brother, just bring whatever you have at home, but don't make it too much trouble.

Sheng Xiping used to wish he could live and eat at the Liu family's house, and he felt right at home here.

He knew he would be staying for lunch when he came today, so he didn't make a fuss about sitting for a bit and then leaving.

"Don't worry, we have everything we need. Yesterday, when my second brother and I went up the mountain to work, we even caught two rabbits."

I was originally going to stew it for lunch today, but since you're here, how about rabbit stew with matsutake mushrooms?

Liu Yujiang waved his hand dismissively.

With their abilities, their family will never lack food.

Even if you don't have it at home, just go into the mountains to get it, and in less than two hours you'll have everything you need.
