"Oh? You're leaving again in a little while? I thought you were staying at home tonight."
Look at you, you finally managed to come all this way, but you didn't even get to stay at home for one night.
If word gets out, people will say I'm a stingy father-in-law! My son-in-law came, and I didn't even let him stay for a couple of days!"
Zhou Mingyuan had drunk a bit too much, but he wasn't drunk yet. He really liked Sheng Xiping.
It's rare to see him, and I feel like I have so much to say to Sheng Xiping; we haven't had enough time to talk.
"If you ask me, nowhere is safer than our home. You can stay here tonight, and tomorrow morning, Qingyue will take you to Donglin Street."
Why are you going out so late at night? Just stay at our house, eat and sleep as usual, and we'll feel at ease.
"How about this, third brother, go to Donglin Street and pick up your brother-in-law's friend so he can come and stay with us too."
Zhou Qingyue, who was eating at the side, choked upon hearing this. Well, now that the son-in-law has arrived, the son is no longer his own.
It's so late at night, and he's ordering people to do chores. It's amazing his father could come up with such a thing.
"Yes, yes, brother-in-law, if you're really worried about your friend, I'll ride my bicycle over there and bring him back."
He was thinking to himself, but he couldn't show it on his face. Zhou Qingyue quickly nodded and agreed with his father.
“That’s right, Xiping, your dad is right.”
The hostel is a mixed bag; I don't know what kind of people stay there. If you ask me, you'd be better off staying at home.
"You can go to Donglin Street after you've had breakfast tomorrow morning," Wang Chunxiu also advised.
How could Sheng Xiping, a lone man, possibly argue with a family of three? With his in-laws' earnest pleas for him to stay, Sheng Xiping couldn't very well say he was leaving.
"That's fine, we'll follow Mom and Dad's arrangements. But we can't drink any more alcohol, we can't miss our train tomorrow morning."
The main reason was that Zhou Mingyuan was getting old; a little wine was pleasant, but drunkenness was harmful to his health. Sheng Xiping couldn't say it outright, so he could only say it indirectly.
"Okay, whatever you say, let's drink."
Zhou Mingyuan nodded hurriedly in agreement. As long as his son-in-law stayed, it didn't matter whether he drank or not.
So the two of them finished the rest of their drinks and ate some food, and that concluded the meal.
Afterwards, Wang Chunxiu went to tidy up the table, Zhou Qingyue brewed a pot of tea, and Zhou Mingyuan and Sheng Xiping sat on the kang (a heated brick bed) drinking tea and chatting.
In the evening, Sheng Xiping stayed in the west room, while the Zhou family of three stayed in the east room.
Sheng Xiping had traveled to the county during the day, spending several hours by car, and was quite tired. He drank some wine and fell asleep shortly after lying down.
At five o'clock on the morning of the 4th, Wang Chunxiu got up to cook, and at six o'clock she called her family to get up to wash and eat.
After breakfast, Zhou Mingyuan sent his youngest son to take Sheng Xiping to Donglin Street by bicycle.
Meanwhile, Chen Weimin, having not seen Sheng Xiping return to the hotel last night, guessed that he had stayed at the Zhou family's house.
He ate something in the morning, then came back and tidied up, waiting.
The two met, settled the hotel bill, and then walked to Sen Tie.
Over there, the motorcycles from the bureau that were going to the forest farm on business were waiting. As soon as Chen Weimin arrived, they recognized him and quickly let him get on.
Then the driver started the car, carrying a load of people, and drove towards the forest farm.
