Chapter Twenty-Three: Harvest

Most fishermen don't go with the current, but some skilled fishermen can go against the current and still catch quite a few fish.

Sheng Xiping is a master at catching fish, both with and against the current, and he can catch quite a few fish at a time.

However, these days, business is prohibited, and if too many are arrested, they can only be given away.

Besides, Qianchuan Forest Farm is too far from the town. You have to take a small train to get around. Even if you can sell fish there, it's not worth the trip.

Therefore, although Sheng Xiping has this skill, he doesn't use it often.

They only catch fish occasionally, share them with their neighbors, and keep some for themselves.

The three brothers, using tin flashlights, worked until almost eight o'clock, finally managing to clip the fish fins together, and then went home.

After they came in, the house was all tidied up, so it was time to go to sleep.

I have to go to work or school tomorrow, how can I sleep in and not be able to get up?

Before going to bed, Zhang Shuzhen didn't forget to scare her youngest son, telling him to call out to him again the next morning.

If he doesn't get up, I'll make something delicious for him tomorrow night, and I won't give him anything to eat.

Upon hearing this, Sheng Xitai was so frightened that he burrowed into the covers and quickly closed his eyes, falling asleep almost immediately.

Sheng Xiping gets up early in the morning. He's been working and going into the mountains all day, so he's quite tired. He falls asleep quickly after lying down.

The next day, it was still the rooster that woke Sheng Xiping.

He carried buckets to the riverbank, filled the water tank at home first, and then went to the spot where he had caught fish the night before to see if he had caught anything.

As soon as I arrived at the riverbank, I saw a fish leap and jump into the fish basket under the willow curtain.

Sheng Xiping was overjoyed. He quickly rolled up his trousers and waded into the water, walking towards the center of the river to check his catch.

The river in Qianchuan Forest Farm is located on the upper reaches of the Sandao Songhua River. Although the weather is already hot in June, the river water is still quite cool.

Especially early in the morning, it's not exactly freezing cold, but it's enough to make you shiver.

I felt cold when I first got into the water, but after walking a few steps, I got used to it and quickly reached the middle of the river.

On the willow curtain, fish of all sizes thrashed and leaped incessantly.

The faint morning light shone on the fish's scales, reflecting a silvery glow.

Sheng Xiping didn't stand on ceremony and picked all the fish into the bucket, filling it halfway with small miscellaneous fish.

Next, they lifted out the fish basket that was fixed underneath.

The moment the fish basket was lifted out of the water, Sheng Xiping glanced inside and thought, "Wow, there are quite a few fish, and they all seem to be quite big."

It's not clear what kind of fish are there.

Regardless, Sheng Xiping was very satisfied with the fruitful results.

So they carried the fish baskets and buckets to the shore, then turned back to put away the willow curtains and destroyed the stone wall.

Then, with a bucket in one hand and a fish basket in the other, and the bundle of willow branches tucked under his arm, he hurried home.

As Sheng Xiping entered the house, he saw Zhang Shuzhen washing rice.

Sheng Xiping wanted to say that he should quickly pick out the fish, squeeze out some willow roots or something to clean its belly.

You can stew it with soybean paste, or go to a tofu shop and pick up a few pieces of large tofu to stew together.

If we stick some more flatbreads on the side of the pot, we can have a good meal this morning.

But then I thought, forget it, I made that brat Sheng Xitai late yesterday because of the stewed chicken.

If I make another fish dish this morning, that bear will probably be late again.

For the sake of Sheng Xitai's teacher's health, let's just have some porridge to tide us over, and not upset the teacher.

So Sheng Xiping didn't say anything, he just found a large basin and poured all the fish out of the fish basket.

Fish are actually quite resilient. Even if they've been out of the water for a while, they'll still be lively and jumping around when you put them back in a big basin.

The basin contained all sorts of fish, big and small, but what surprised Sheng Xiping the most was that there were even a few small, fine-scaled fish among them.

They weren't very big, weighing only a little over a pound each.

This is a real gem, a very precious cold-water fish with few bones, delicate flesh, and a delicious flavor.

Whether steamed or braised, or even just simply marinated in salt and roasted on tree branches, it's exceptionally delicious.

In the past, these naughty boys would catch fish and roast them in the wild. One time, they ate a fine-scaled fish.

Those snow-white, delicate garlic cloves are incredibly fragrant.

Besides the fine scales, there are also a lot of willow roots, boat nails, white bleach, and the like.

Those willow roots were quite large, some almost as thick as a finger.

Add some homemade soybean paste to this stuff, stew it in a pot, and it tastes amazing.

Other small fish that you can't eat right now can be gutted, have a little salt added, and then dried.

When winter comes, take it out, fry it briefly in oil, add some chili and vinegar, and cook it until crispy and delicious with rice.

"Mom, make a willow root sauce this afternoon, and stew a small fish. You can decide what to do with the rest."

Sheng Xiping can cook, but his mother is currently in charge of the household, so he still needs to discuss with her what they eat.

Zhang Shuzhen had just put the millet into the pot when she added the gastrodia elata, which she had washed the night before.

Hearing her son's words, she turned to look at the fish in the large basin.

"Oh my, you've caught quite a few. Okay, I'll do whatever you say, I can't let you lose face." Zhang Shuzhen smiled.

Her son is capable; he brings home food all the time, and she cooks it all up. What's so difficult about that? Other people can't even get this kind of food.

"Aren't you sleepy getting up so early? Why don't you go back to your room and take another nap? I'll wake you up when dinner is ready."

Zhang Shuzhen felt sorry for her eldest son who had to work so much, so she let him go back to his room for a nap.

"No need, Mom. I'll go to Uncle Hu's house and ask what kind of work the team is doing today."

Sheng Xiping glanced at his watch; it was past 5:30. Why was he still taking a nap at this hour?
