Zhang Shuzhen couldn't help but complain about her husband's behavior when she gave birth.
Sheng Xiping suppressed a laugh and nodded. "I understand, Mom, don't worry."
After saying that, Sheng Xiping left the room and went to the west room to see his wife and children.
"How did your trip to the Guo family go? Did they cause any trouble?"
Zhou Qinglan was still awake. She had just heard what Sheng Yunfang had said and was worried that her mother-in-law and husband had gotten into a conflict with the Guo family, which would be bad if things got out of hand.
"It's alright, I'm here. Do you think I'll let Mom suffer? That old woman from the Guo family is a bully who picks on the weak and fears the strong. As soon as she saw us coming, she backed down."
Tonight's main purpose is to reassure Xiaofeng; we're not going there to fight.
Sheng Xiping climbed onto the kang (a heated brick bed), sat down next to his wife and son, and looked at the sleeping little guy.
"Wife, you're highly educated, think about it and give our son a name."
I still need to go to the farm to register his household registration; it won't work if he's not named.
Sheng Xiping suddenly remembered that the baby had been born for two days, but they still hadn't chosen a name.
"Shouldn't Dad be in charge of naming the child? If I name it, he'll probably be unhappy."
Zhou Qinglan shook her head. She dared not take on this task; naming was a matter for the elders in the family.
What character should this generation of children use? What are the names of the children of the same generation in my hometown? What are the names of the older generation in my family?
These are things that her in-laws know best. Zhou Qinglan doesn't know them, so she doesn't dare to give random suggestions, lest she upset her in-laws.
"It's okay, why are there so many rules about naming a child? We live in the Northeast now, so we don't need to follow the naming conventions of our hometown. As long as it sounds nice, that's fine."
Sheng Xiping didn't care much about these things. A name is just a title; as long as it sounds nice and is easy to remember, there's no need to be so particular.
Sheng Liancheng and his wife were not very educated, and all six of their children had their names chosen by someone else. By the time their grandchildren reached that age, they couldn't care less about the names.
Zhou Qinglan was the most cultured person in the Sheng family, so Sheng Liancheng and his wife would definitely not find fault with the name she gave them.
Although Sheng Xiping said that, Zhou Qinglan did not dare to agree immediately and cautiously suggested that she could think of a few more options.
We'll decide after consulting with my in-laws.
Sheng Xiping thought about it and realized it made sense. After all, this was the grandparents' own grandson, and the grandparents should have some involvement in such an important matter as naming him.
The couple chatted for a while, and just then the baby woke up, pouting and crying.
Sheng Xiping quickly picked up the child, unwrapped the blanket, and looked inside.
"Oh dear, my son peed so much! It was a huge amount of pee that almost washed your parents away."
This was quite a pee; both the small and large diapers were wet, and even a small patch of the outer quilt was damp.
As Sheng Xiping spoke, he pulled out both the small and large clogs.
Then he reached over and grabbed a piece of cloth from the stack of diapers on the kang (a heated brick bed), folded it up a couple of times, and haphazardly placed it under his son's bottom.
“You don’t put the diapers on like that. You have to put the big diaper on the bottom first, then lift the child up on top, and then put the small diaper on top.”
Zhou Qinglan was lying down, and by the time she got up, she was too late. She could only watch helplessly as her husband haphazardly put diapers on the child.
Zhou Qinglan sighed helplessly, quickly moved forward, took the things from Sheng Xiping's hands, and started doing it herself.
"Watch carefully, tuck this corner of the big diaper in, then support the child's neck with one hand and his bottom with the other, and move him onto the big diaper."
Then fold the small diapers into long strips and put them under your bottom. Zhou Qinglan taught Sheng Xiping while changing her son's diapers.
These little diapers are made from old clothes, old sheets, and other things from family members. Using old materials makes them softer, and the pure cotton material is more absorbent.
To find these diapers, Zhang Shuzhen turned all the chests and cabinets in her house upside down. She cut them, scalded them with boiling water, and dried them in the sun before carefully folding them and putting them away for future use.
A large cloth is a piece of pure blue or pure red cotton cloth bought from a store, three feet wide, which is then torn into a three-foot-long strip.
Generally speaking, blue is used for the birth of a boy, and red is used for the birth of a girl.
Of course, most households will prepare both red and blue pieces.
In addition, Zhang Shuzhen also washed and ironed the belt that Sheng Xiping and Zhou Qinglan wore when they got married, and used it as a large diaper.
Even so, these diapers are not enough; they need to be changed and washed as needed.
Fortunately, there was a fire wall built under the north wall of the room. Clothes needed in a hurry were laid on the fire wall, and the rest were laid on the kang (a heated brick bed) or hung on a rope to dry.
Anyway, this house looks really nice now, with colorful flags waving everywhere.
After placing a small diaper under a large diaper, and then covering it with a quilt, Zhou Qinglan held the child in her arms and unbuttoned her clothes to breastfeed.
"Hurry up and spread the quilt out on the edge of the kang to dry. I think it's only a small wet patch, not worth washing."
"Take these big diapers out, wash them clean, and spread them out on the heated wall to dry. This rascal eats and peees a lot; four diapers might not be enough for him in one night."
Zhou Qinglan glanced at Sheng Xiping and gestured for him to get to work.
"Okay, I'll go right away."
Sheng Xiping wasn't impatient. That's how it is when you raise a child. You can't potty train a newborn in the first month, and there aren't any disposable diapers like in later generations. If you use diapers, you just have to wash them frequently.
So, Sheng Xiping took the clothes he had changed out of, went to the outer room to fetch water, washed them with soap, rinsed them twice with clean water, wrung them out, and brought them back into the room.
Feel the clothes on the heated wall; if they're dry, fold them up and put them on the kang (heated brick bed), then spread the wet ones on top to dry.
