Chapter Thirty-Seven: Delivering Bear Legs

"Forget about the gallbladder, let's feed it to the dog first."

While Liu Yuhe was extracting bear bile, Sheng Xiping was checking the dogs' injuries.

The dogs fought the black bear for quite a while, and many of them were injured.

Among them, Erqing was the most seriously injured, Erlang Shen was slightly less injured, and the others were injured to varying degrees, but not seriously.

Hunting dogs are not afraid of getting hurt; as long as they can bring down their prey, they will become increasingly ferocious.

The problem is that even if the dog is injured, it may still be unable to knock down its prey. After a few times, the dog will lose confidence and become increasingly slippery.

Therefore, hunting depends not only on the dogs, but also on the hunter.

No matter how tough the dog is, if the people don't cooperate well and their marksmanship is poor, it's all for nothing.

In the end, it could very well result in the dog's death and people being injured.

Fortunately, the dogs' injuries weren't too serious. After a simple bandage, they were able to eat and drink normally without any problems.

After feeding the dog, the three of them separated the remaining bear meat, deboned the parts that could be deboned, discarded the internal organs, and hung them on a tree.

In summer, this black bear wasn't fat; its weight hadn't reached its peak.

After deducting the internal organs, bones, and the meat used to feed the dogs, less than 200 pounds are left.

The meat was packed into sacks, and the three of them each carried a portion. Then, leading the dog, they headed back.

When we went into the mountains, we actually took a long detour in order to find the black bear.

On the way back, the three of them took a shortcut, which saved them a lot of time.

Even so, it was almost six o'clock when they returned to the large alkali field.

The dogs weren't leashed, and as soon as they entered the village, they took off running home.

Sheng Xiping and his two companions carried the meat, guns, and other items, and slowly made their way back.

Liu Changde and his family were all at home anxiously waiting for news.

As soon as the dogs returned, their bellies bulging, it was clear that the bear hunt had been a success.

"Old woman, hurry up and prepare the meal, the children should be home soon."

Liu Changde breathed a sigh of relief and told his wife and daughters-in-law to hurry up and prepare the meal.

As soon as he finished speaking, Sheng Xiping and two others came in from outside, each carrying a burlap sack on their shoulder.

Needless to say, it must contain bear meat or something.

"Father, Master, we're back," the three said in unison as they entered the courtyard.

"Okay, it's good to be back. Hurry up, put your things down first, come inside to wash your hands and eat."

Liu Changde greeted the children with a big smile and invited them inside for dinner.

Originally, Sheng Xiping came to visit his master and mistress with the intention of staying for lunch.

As a result, this happened, and they went into the mountains to hunt bears again.

It was almost six o'clock. After running all over the mountain all afternoon, he was tired and hungry, so Sheng Xiping didn't care about anything else and decided to stay and have dinner at Liu's house.

Dinner was simple: leftover rabbit stew with matsutake mushrooms from lunch, along with some other dishes, served with golden flatbread.

The three of them, Sheng Xiping, were starving, and they wolfed down their food, enjoying it immensely.

After dinner, Sheng Xiping got up to leave, but Liu Changde quickly told him to take some meat back with him.

“My son, take a bear hind leg back and give it to the secretary of your farm.”

They did us a great favor, so we can't leave without showing our appreciation.

Also, bring back some more meat. Although bears aren't as fat in the summer, they still produce a lot of oil.

Your forest farm struggles to produce oil; you rely entirely on supplies.

You're not free these days, you don't have much time to go into the mountains, and I'm afraid there's not much meat or oil left at home, right?

Bring back a lot; it should last until autumn.

Let's wait until autumn, then you three can go and get something else.

Whether it's wild boar or a black bear, frying it in oil will be enough for winter.

At Liu Changde's age, he naturally thinks things through more thoroughly than younger people, and his arrangements are quite reasonable.

"Yes, yes, brother, your family has a lot of people, so take more meat back with you."

Don't be shy with us. It's getting hot now, and all this meat will spoil easily. It's best to share it quickly.

Liu Yujiang also spoke over there.

Since his master and elder brother had both spoken, Sheng Xiping didn't need to be coy.

So, following his master's instructions, he took a bear hind leg, packed in a lot more bear meat, and carried the sack away.

"Master, Mistress, I'm going home now. I'll come to see you again another day."

Sheng Xiping carried the meat back home. The distance of two miles between the alkali field and the forest farm was nothing to the young man. Before long, Sheng Xiping returned home.

We've already finished eating at home, and we're clearing the table now.

Zhang Shuzhen was taken aback when she saw her son carrying a sack back.

"What are you doing? Didn't you say you were having lunch at your master's? Why are you back so late?"

"Have you had dinner yet? The food's still warm, hurry up and eat something." A mother's biggest concern is that her son is well-fed and warmly dressed.

"Mom, I've already had dinner at Master's house," Sheng Xiping said hurriedly.

"Quickly find a big basin, I'm going to take all the meat out."

We need to process this much meat quickly, otherwise it would be such a waste if it spoiled.

Zhang Shuzhen was taken aback. "Meat? What kind of meat? Did your master give it to you?"

"Look at you, you're really something! You ate two meals at your master's place, and you're taking so much meat with you when you leave?"

"Mom, this is the bear that my older brothers and I hunted this afternoon. Please bring the basin over quickly, I have something to do."

Sheng Xiping didn't have time to explain things to his mother; he still had to deliver a bear leg to Wang Jiachuan before it got completely dark.

Zhang Shuzhen wanted to ask what was going on, but seeing her son's anxious look, she didn't ask any further questions.

They took out the big basin that had contained snakes from yesterday and the day before, and watched Sheng Xiping take meat out of the sack.

"Wow, so many! It's quite a big black bear."
