After Sheng Xikang finished his college entrance examination, he returned to the forest farm, just as the Sheng Yunfang sisters and Sheng Xitai were beginning their final exams.
Two days later, the final exams ended, and the three siblings were on holiday.
With the children on holiday and someone at home to look after them, Zhang Shuzhen could finally breathe a sigh of relief and take a break.
Just then, Sheng Xi'an's letter arrived, saying that they would be on summer vacation at the end of July, and he would first go to Changchun to find Zhou Qinglan, and then the two of them would come back together.
The family was overjoyed to receive the letter. Zhang Shuzhen directed her two daughters to take apart, wash, and remake all the bedding in the house.
They cleaned up the house, inside and out, all over again.
After the college entrance examination, Sheng Xikang completely let loose, spending his days leading Sheng Xitai to either set traps on the mountain or catch fish in the river.
But for some reason, nine out of ten of the traps he set failed to catch anything.
The same goes for Yu Liangzi. He followed his brother's method of catching fish in the same way, but he only caught a few fish all night.
"Brother, please lead us up the mountain to go hunting."
"I'm just sitting at home all day with nothing to do. My tricks don't work; nothing gets caught."
That afternoon, when Sheng Xiping got home from get off work, Sheng Xikang and Sheng Xitai surrounded their older brother, nagging him to take them hunting in the mountains.
"There's no grass at this time of year, what's the point of going into the mountains to hunt? Besides, I just got back to the day shift, would I take you hunting?"
What, do I have to take time off again? You two better shut up, this isn't the right time.
Sheng Xiping, with a sullen face, ignored the two and went straight into the house.
"What's wrong? You look unhappy."
Zhang Shuzhen was coaxing her grandson when she turned her head and saw that Sheng Xiping's expression was off, so she asked him a question.
"Mom, Uncle Wang is being transferred. A new secretary came to the forest farm today," Sheng Xiping said with a long sigh as he sat on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed).
"Huh? Your Uncle Wang is being transferred? Where is he being transferred to? That's not right. Shouldn't the transfer be in the spring?" Zhang Shuzhen was taken aback when she heard this.
The leaders of these forest farms under the bureau are rotated every three to five years, usually after the winter production season ends.
In this way, when transferred to another location, there will be about six months to adapt. By the time winter production resumes, they will be familiar with the situation and able to work better.
Wang Jiachuan was transferred to Qianchuan Forest Farm in the spring of 1974. Four years have passed in the blink of an eye, and it is indeed time for him to be rotated.
However, the transfer in July is clearly not in line with common sense.
"My Uncle Wang has been transferred to the Tanghe Forestry Bureau as its director."
Wang Jiachuan worked at Qianchuan Forest Farm for four years. Qianchuan Forest Farm ranked first in the entire bureau in winter logging volume for four consecutive years. His outstanding work performance was recognized by his superiors.
Just then, a director from the Tanghe Forestry Bureau retired, so the higher-ups transferred Wang Jiachuan there to serve as the director, primarily in charge of production.
"Oh, isn't that great? The forestry bureau secretary has been promoted to bureau chief, and your Uncle Wang has been promoted too."
The Sheng and Wang families had a good relationship, and Zhang Shuzhen was happy for Wang Jiachuan when he was promoted.
“I should be happy that my Uncle Wang has been promoted, but the new guy is no pushover. He just arrived today and he's already holding a meeting to set rules for us.”
They find fault with everything and everything, thinking nothing is up to standard.
They also said that starting today, unless there are very special circumstances, we will not be allowed to take leave, and we will have to hold meetings to oversee production and so on.
"Right now, everyone at the farm headquarters is probably cursing at home." Sheng Xiping sighed.
Everyone originally thought that with Wang Jiachuan's transfer, Zheng Xianyong would be promoted to secretary, but unexpectedly, the province sent someone directly.
The new secretary is only in his early thirties. He is said to have studied at the Provincial Forestry College. He is arrogant, haughty, and looks down on everyone.
It's said that a new broom sweeps clean, and this new secretary, before even properly handing over his responsibilities, has already given the people at Qianchuan Forestry Farm a hard time.
Originally, Wang Jiachuan was to be transferred, but no one knew the news in advance, which made everyone quite uneasy.
If another new Party Secretary comes along and causes trouble on his very first day, many people will be reprimanded. How can they not be upset?
As the mother and son were talking, Sheng Liancheng came home from get off work. He had a sullen face, sat down on the kang (a heated brick bed) as soon as he entered, and was also sighing.
"What? The new Party Secretary went to your repair shop too?" Zhang Shuzhen noticed something was wrong and quickly asked.
"Yeah, not only did he go over to inspect, but he also found fault with everything and directed us to clean up this and put that together."
He's keeping us guys running around in circles, and the worst part is, everything he says is off-topic. It's so annoying.
Sheng Liancheng was annoyed, so his tone was naturally not very good.
"How could this be?" Zhang Shuzhen couldn't help but sigh upon hearing this.
I've never experienced anything like this before. I don't know if bringing in a secretary from the provincial level is a good thing or a bad thing.
"Forget it, it doesn't matter who's the Party Secretary. We're all just doing the work. As long as we get paid, we don't care about anything else."
"Who told us to take their bowl?" Zhang Shuzhen sighed and tried to comfort the father and son.
Sheng Liancheng and Sheng Xiping, father and son, looked at each other and sighed.
That's true, but the problem is that the new leader doesn't know anything and gives orders blindly.
"Mom is right. We're just ordinary people, going to work and getting paid. Let the higher-ups do whatever they want; it doesn't really concern us anyway."
Sheng Xiping waved his hand, not wanting to talk about these annoying things anymore.
“Oh right, Dad, Uncle Wang is being transferred. Shouldn’t we go and see him?” Sheng Xiping suddenly remembered this.
