Chapter 497 Russian Specialties

"Try it. If you like it, eat more. If you don't like it, eat something else."

Zhang Shuzhen was not familiar with her daughters-in-law's eating habits and was too embarrassed to serve them food, so she just told them to eat more.

"Thank you, Mom. It's so kind of you and Dad to go to the trouble of saving this for us."

Wu Yuhua and Feng Shuyan weren't stupid; they could tell at a glance that their in-laws had put in a lot of effort to prepare this, and they were naturally grateful.

Feng Shuyan is also from Northeast China, so their eating habits are similar. Although Wu Yuhua lives in the capital, she is not picky about food and can eat anything.

Besides, there are plenty of dishes on the table; even if you don't eat wild vegetables, there are other things to eat.

Sheng Xinze is seven months old and Sheng Xinyao is almost five months old; they've both started eating solid foods.

Zhang Shuzhen steamed some egg cakes for them. The two daughters-in-law held their children in their arms, taking a bite themselves and feeding the children a bite.

"Come on, you two give us the child. You eat first, and we'll talk after you're done."

When Zhang Shuzhen and Aunt Li saw this, they quickly took the child and fed him, letting Wu Yuhua and the others eat in peace.

Aunt Li is a good cook; the food is delicious, and Wu Yuhua and Feng Shuyan both enjoyed it.

The stewed pork ribs with green beans and corn was especially delicious; both wives really enjoyed it, each picking up a piece of corn to gnaw on—it was so fragrant.

For Sheng Xi'an and Sheng Xikang, today's meal was absolutely delicious; everything was wonderful.

The brothers devoured two large bowls of rice with the dishes in one go, like a whirlwind.

"Ah, home-cooked food is the best. I've been craving this for so long," Sheng Xikang exclaimed.

Everyone enjoyed the meal, even the two little ones ate their steamed egg cake with gusto.

After finishing their meal, everyone pitched in to clear the table.

Then the women sat on the kang (a heated brick bed), chatting while soothing the children. The men sat on the sofa, brewed a pot of tea, and chatted while drinking the tea.

"Oh, right, I also brought back quite a few things. I'll get them for you later."

Sheng Xiping remembered that he had brought back a lot of things from Heihe, so he quickly grabbed the large backpack and started rummaging through it.

"Xin Yue, Xin Qi, these are for you two, Russian nesting dolls, take them and play with them."

Sheng Xiping took two wooden dolls out of his pocket and handed them to his daughter.

After Sheng Xinyue and Sheng Xinqi were born, Sheng Xiping went out to do business. Wherever he went, he would buy dolls for his daughters.

Now, there are all sorts of dolls at home, and Zhou Qinglan is tired of constantly tidying up after her two daughters.

"Wow, what kind of dolls are these? They're so pretty!" Upon hearing this, Sheng Xinyue and Sheng Xinqi rushed over, each hugging a doll and refusing to let go.

These wooden dolls look a bit like roly-poly toys, they're round and smooth.

It is decorated with colorful patterns. It depicts a little Russian girl wearing a scarf and a Russian-style dress, looking smiling and adorable.

“This doll can be opened; there’s a surprise inside.” Sheng Xiping smiled and pointed to the crack in the middle of the wooden doll, gesturing for his daughter to open it.

The two girls did as their father said. After opening the outer layer, they found that there was another wooden doll inside, with the same colors and clothes, but it was a size smaller than the one outside.

"Wow, there are dolls inside!" the two girls exclaimed.

"Open the inside again," Sheng Xiping guided with a smile, and the two girls did as he instructed.

And so, layer by layer, the dolls were opened until the very last one, the smallest of which was about the size of a finger.

"This is quite interesting, brother. You bought two?" Sheng Yunfang and Sheng Yunfei also came over at this moment, looking at it with great interest.

"I didn't buy this. It was brought from the Russians. I don't know who switched it."

I replaced them with these two, and when they came back, I liked them so much that I kept them.

"What? You two want some too? Then I'll go over after the New Year and have them exchange a few more for you to play with," Sheng Xiping explained with a smile.

Sun Jinggang and the others didn't recognize this thing. It seemed to have been given to them as a bonus when they were exchanging goods, and no one paid any attention to it.

Sheng Xiping only brought it back from afar because he thought his daughter would like it.

"No, no, we're all too old for this kind of thing," the Sheng Yunfang sisters quickly waved their hands.

Sheng Xiping smiled and continued taking things out of his pocket. "Xinhua, Xinyu, these are for you two, binoculars."

The military binoculars were also obtained by exchanging liquor. Sheng Xiping thought his son would like them, so he specially brought back two.

Sheng Xinhua and Sheng Xinyu were fiddling with something in the corner when they heard about the binoculars and the two boys darted over in a flash.

"A telescope? This is the telescope they talk about on TV? That's great, thank you, Dad."

The two brothers each took one, first hanging the straps around their necks, and then looking into the distance with binoculars.

"Hey, this thing is fun. It's like things that are far away have moved right up to us."

"No wonder reconnaissance soldiers on TV use this, it's so interesting." Sheng Xinhua muttered as he watched.

"Dad, do you have a gun? It would be even cooler if we had another gun."

Sheng Xinhua held binoculars in his hand, craning his neck to look into the pocket, hoping that his father would take out a pistol for him.

"Go to hell, guns? You're not even as tall as a gun, and you're already thinking about guns."

"Your dad's in business, not an arms dealer. He wouldn't have a gun. Besides, what would you, a mere kid, want a gun? You're asking for a beating."

Upon hearing this, Sheng Xiping angrily scolded his son. "This brat, how old is he, and he's already eyeing guns!"

“I heard from Grandpa that you were only a teenager when you went hunting in the mountains with the advisor. I’m already eleven, why can’t I have a gun?”
