Liu Yujiang waved his hand, and together with Liu Yuhe and Sheng Xiping, they used a pole to lift the big blind bear off the sled, and then figured out a way to get it into the yard.
"My goodness, what a huge bear!"
Zhang Shuzhen shone her flashlight on the ground and was startled; such a large bear was quite a rare sight.
"Come on, Xiping, let's go home for dinner. Didn't my dad just say he's been waiting for us?"
The three of them brought the bear to the yard, and Liu Yujiang called Sheng Xiping over, inviting him to eat with them.
"Big brother, second brother, I have to be on duty tonight, and besides, this thing hasn't been cleaned up yet, so I won't go over for dinner."
"You two tell my master that I'll come over tomorrow and have a good drink with him."
Now that he's home, how could Sheng Xiping possibly go back to the Liu family's for dinner? Not to mention he's working the night shift this week, he also needs to deal with this huge thing on the ground.
Otherwise, if it's left outside to freeze overnight, it'll be rock hard tomorrow, what will you do then?
"See, I knew I shouldn't have let you come back. Okay then, I'll talk to Grandpa about it later."
Liu Yujiang glanced at the bear on the ground, then thought about how he also had one at home that hadn't been dealt with yet. Tonight really wasn't the time for a big meal and drinks, so he decided to postpone it until another day.
And so, the two brothers bid farewell to the Sheng family and drove their horse-drawn sled back to the Dajianchang.
Then we took the bear from our house and, right there in the yard, lit torches and disposed of it.
The same thing happened at the Sheng family's side. Zhang Shuzhen called out the two sisters, Sheng Yunfang and Sheng Yunfei, to help light the way with torches.
Using the light, Sheng Xiping quickly skinned and dismembered the large bear.
When Sheng Xiping and his group drove their sleds back into the mountains, Liu Changde had his eldest daughter-in-law go to the forest farm and tell the Sheng family.
Upon hearing this, Zhang Shuzhen learned that her son had gone into the mountains to kill a large bear and might not return until later that night.
Just in case, after dinner, Zhang Shuzhen asked Sheng Xikang to go to the security department to cover his brother's shift.
In this way, Sheng Xiping doesn't need to rush back to work at the factory.
So they steadily chopped off the bear paws, peeled off the bear skin, and cut the bear meat into pieces.
Bear meat is quite fatty with little lean meat, so it would be better to save it for making deep-frying or something similar.
The Sheng family hasn't lacked oil this year; they have several jars full of oil, and they have nowhere to put them right now.
So Zhang Shuzhen said, "Let's freeze the meat outside first, and send some to the Zhou family when we have time. We can keep the rest to eat slowly."
Anyway, winter is still long. If we can't finish it all, we can always sauté it in oil when it's almost time to leave it in the spring.
So Sheng Xiping laid out the bear meat pieces one by one on the board, along with two broken door panels.
Sheng Yunfang, Sheng Yunfei, along with Sheng Xitai, Chen Feng, and several other children, carried water out of the house and poured it over the meat repeatedly, causing a layer of ice to form on the surface of the meat.
This helps keep the meat fresh for a longer time and prevents it from drying out.
After finishing all that, Sheng Xiping finally had time to go inside and grab a quick bite of food.
He didn't stay at home after that. He rushed to the security department to replace Sheng Xikang, and he stayed there to take his shift.
Originally, Sheng Xiping wanted to take advantage of the night shift to go up the mountain a few more times to hunt some game to use for the New Year.
However, on their first day in the mountains, all three dogs were injured. Erlang Shen's big-headed dog was seriously injured, while the other three were small dogs.
Without a good lead dog, Sheng Xiping wouldn't be able to lead them into the mountains to hunt dogs.
Left with no other choice, Sheng Xiping could only go into the mountains to set traps and snares, or carry a gun and hunt for animals.
Setting traps or snares requires a hunter's sharp eyes and experience. He needs to be able to predict what animals might pass by on the road and which type of trap to use to catch his prey.
Needless to say, hunting in a flanking position is a true test of a hunter's tracking skills, marksmanship, and other abilities.
It's fair to say that if you're good at dog sledding, you can't go wrong with any other sledding, whether it's dog sledding or dog sledding.
Sheng Xiping is also quite skilled at hunting in the mountains. He can always find something to eat or do after a day of wandering around.
During his week-long night shift, Sheng Xiping not only brought home a large brown bear on the first day, but also caught a raccoon, two otters, two pigs, and a roe deer. In short, his haul was quite substantial.
The final exams for primary and secondary schools in Qianchuan will be held on December 24th and 25th.
Sheng Xitai is already a fifth-grade student and will graduate from elementary school and enter junior high school next year.
These days, schools in the forestry system are a bit better; it's not difficult for students to get into junior high school, and almost everyone gets in.
If a student doesn't want to study, then there's no other way but to send them home. Generally, they can finish junior high or high school.
Even so, Zhou Qinglan was very strict with Sheng Xitai's studies.
During the final exam review period, Zhou Qinglan gave Sheng Xitai questions to test him every day. Sheng Xitai did a lot of practice and reviewed thoroughly, so he was not afraid of the exam.
Chen Feng is still young, only in second grade, so Zhou Qinglan isn't too strict with him. However, the boy is very competitive and asks Zhou Qinglan to give him practice questions, which he studies diligently every day after school.
As for the older children, they are all sensible and don't need Zhou Qinglan to worry about them. She just needs to find some problems for them to do.
With a sister-in-law like Zhou Qinglan, the Sheng family children all compete with each other in their studies. Even if they don't say it openly, they are all vying with each other behind the scenes, all wanting to get good grades.
The final exams are over, and the children are on holiday and have gone home.
This year, planting small plots of wasteland is prohibited, and many families over at the Dajianchang area don't have much surplus grain to sell.
Sticky corn and millet were hard to find, so Zhang Shuzhen thought, "If we can't find them, so be it. We can just not make sticky rice cakes." But what else could she do?
