The year I retired from the army, I told my mother that I wanted to marry Liu Ping.
But my mother heard from somewhere that women who had served in the army could not have children, so she cried and asked me to break up with Liu Ping, and said that she would never let Liu Ping marry her unless she died.
When I explained everything to Liu Ping, the sadness in her eyes became so real that it was about to overflow. I was so cruel that I didn't want to look at her and turned around to go on a blind date with the woman my mother had arranged for me.
I heard that the partner my mother found for me is very virtuous, can take care of everything at home and outside, is very capable, and has a good figure and is good at giving birth.
At that time, I thought that if it wasn’t Liu Ping, it didn’t matter who it was, as long as my mother liked it.
On the second day after the blind date, the matchmaker came to my house and told us that the girl was very satisfied with me and asked us what we thought.
My mother immediately said, "Satisfied! Very satisfied! But for this meeting gift, his aunt, you have to talk to us about it."
"The girl's parents said that you only need to give her a few dozen dollars to show your appreciation. They are not selling their daughter. Just be nice to her."
In just a few words, my marriage was finalized.
After it was finalized, we started choosing a date for the wedding. I don't know what my mother was thinking, but she went to Liu Ping's house and invited her to come for a drink.
I heard from people that she went to Liu Ping's house and talked about some nonsense, saying that we were all comrades-in-arms, and she couldn't not come to my wedding, right?
Anyway, I had already lost all hope, so I didn't say anything more. I just asked my mother not to bother Liu Ping again.
What I didn't expect was that Liu Ping didn't come to my wedding banquet. That day, she went to get a marriage certificate with Brother Zhang, a man from the village who had always been in poor health and hadn't found a wife in his thirties.
When I heard the news, I felt a gray haze in front of my eyes. Liu Ping...
From then on, I briefly gave up thinking about Liu Ping and stayed at home for a while. I only slept with my wife on the night of our wedding banquet, and I couldn't get up since then.
I don't know if it's physical or psychological.
A month later, when I accompanied her back to her parents' home to celebrate the festival, I overheard her telling her mother that I was not capable of doing so.
In order to ease the embarrassment, I found an old comrade-in-arms and got me into the transport team in the county town, a very profitable team, but also one that was accompanied by crises.
I went out for a run and when I got home I found out that my wife was pregnant.
My mother said that she could close her eyes even if she died now.
I didn't expect that my wife would get pregnant just that one time. After that, I worked very hard to make money for the sake of our family.
Every time I came back from outside, I would bring her some good things to nourish her body, as well as cloth to make new clothes, wool to knit sweaters, and cotton to make cotton-padded clothes. As long as it was useful or she asked me to bring it, I would bring it home.
During those years, my health was fine in every way, except when I was with my wife, I seemed to lose that function.
Out of a sense of morality, I haven't tried looking for other women. I have tried hard to give my wife a complete married life.
But no matter how hard I try, my second child just doesn't live up to expectations.
She asked her parents to find many folk remedies for me, and I followed their instructions and took them all, but there was no improvement at all.
When my son was five years old, my mother's health became worse and worse, and she died not long after. Only then did I realize that she had forced me to marry someone else because she was afraid that she would not see my child being born before she died.
How should I put it? I used to hate her a little, but suddenly I don’t hate her anymore. I married someone else, and Liu Ping also married someone else. I should have let it go long ago.
Not long after my mother passed away, my health suddenly improved. My wife always thought that the folk remedy worked. Our married life was very harmonious during this period, and I didn’t think much about the past.
My work in the transport team is still going on. If I go on a short trip, I may be back in two or three months. If it is a long trip, it will probably take about half a year.
Every time I go out, my wife will prepare things I may need on the road.
That time I went out for a short trip and then a long one. If I took the job consecutively, I could get a lot more money. I gritted my teeth and took the job. I only stayed at home for one night and did nothing. The next day I continued to do transportation.
As a result, when I finished that trip and came back, everyone congratulated me and said that my wife was pregnant.
I pretended to look very happy, but I was actually extremely sad in my heart. In order to make life better for my family, I worked day and night in transportation, and as a result, my wife gave me such a reward.
Although I felt very uncomfortable, I still tried to calm myself down. What if my wife didn't do it voluntarily? She might have no choice. After all, after I left, she was the only one left at home with my elderly grandfather.
Maybe something really unfair happened to me.
When I got home, my wife was cooking with a big belly.
When she saw me, her face turned pale. It took her a while to react. She smiled and came towards me, "Dad, you're back."
I forced a smile and asked her softly, "Whose?"
"You, you, what are you talking about? Of course it's yours, the night you came back last time..."
"I'm tired, not drunk. I know for sure whether I wanted you that night or not." I closed the door when I came back, and tried to keep my voice as low as possible when questioning.
She lowered her head and said nothing. When I asked her again, she started to cry and kept shaking her head and crying. She didn't say a word about the baby in her belly.
"Okay, you won't tell me, right? From now on, I won't go out. I will definitely find out whose child is in your belly."
