Extra Chapter: Love and Not Love

Zhao Zhenzhu and Zhou Bingchen were a well-known loving couple in the compound, and everyone around them envied them.

Zhou Bingchen is successful in his career and holds a high position in his forties.

Zhao Zhenzhu is a well-known entrepreneur in Beijing, whose personal wealth has ranked among the top ten on a certain international rich list for several consecutive years.

Zhao Zhenzhu doesn't forget to give back to society while making money. Not only does she pay a large amount of taxes to the country every year in accordance with the law, but she also dedicates herself to public welfare.

Zhao Zhenzhu cultivated dozens of capable assistants, each of whom was utterly loyal. As a result, Zhao Zhenzhu's business grew very large.

Even though Zhao Zhenzhu is the "President Zhao" whom everyone admires outside, she likes to do many things personally at home. Under Zhao Zhenzhu's careful guidance, her two children have achieved considerable success in their respective fields before graduating from university.

To outsiders, Zhou Bingchen seemed incredibly happy, but he harbored a small regret.

Zhou Bingchen felt that Zhao Zhenzhu had changed ever since she called him that year asking for a divorce, and that she no longer loved him as much as before.

In the past, Zhao Zhenzhu's heart and eyes were completely devoted to Zhou Bingchen.

Zhao Zhenzhu now loves her career, her children, and her family.

Of all her family members, Zhao Zhenzhu loved her two children the most, followed by Zhao Qingshan and Wu Meiyun, and then her younger brother Zhao Tianyu. Zhou Bingchen ranked last in Zhao Zhenzhu's heart.

Zhou Bingchen was very disappointed, but he didn't dare to force the issue.

He did make mistakes when he was young. For the sake of a reputation for filial piety, he neglected his wife's feelings. During the years Zhao Zhenzhu lived in Zhoujia Village, she raised her two children with her own hands and the help of her family, all while being bullied by Zhou Fugui's family.

If Zhou Bingchen hadn't had that dream, and if Zhao Zhenzhu hadn't fought back, their family's fate would not have been good.

Therefore, Zhou Bingchen kept this small regret to himself, not daring to let Zhao Zhenzhu find out.

He was afraid that if things went wrong, Zhao Zhenzhu would divorce him again.

If Zhao Zhenzhu were not by his side, Zhou Bingchen felt that no matter how high his official rank or how high his status, his life would be meaningless.

Zhao Tianyu has also achieved great success in his career.

The year after Zhao Zhenzhu and Zhou Bingchen moved to Beijing, Zhao Tianyu resigned from his job at the supply and marketing cooperative and went south to Guangzhou to seek his fortune.

After earning his first pot of gold, Zhao Tianyu went to Hong Kong to develop his career.

At the age of thirty, Zhao Tianyu married a beautiful, virtuous, and talented young lady from a prominent family in Hong Kong. The couple worked together diligently, and three years later, Zhao's Jewelry became internationally renowned. Zhao Tianyu and his wife made a fortune and became famous jewelry tycoons in Hong Kong.

After Zhao Tianyu got married, he took Zhao Qingshan and his wife to live in Hong Kong.

Zhao Qingshan and his wife lived in Hong Kong for half a year, but felt uncomfortable and finally chose to return to Beijing to retire.

A few years ago, Zhao Zhenzhu bought several adjacent courtyard houses when housing prices were low. One of them was registered under the names of Zhao Qingshan and his wife.

Zhao Qingshan and his wife lived next door to Zhao Zhenzhu, which made Zhao Tianyu feel more at ease.

However, Zhao Tianyu would not take advantage of his sister.

Zhao Tianyu paid Zhao Zhenzhu twice the market price for the courtyard house where Zhao Qingshan and his wife lived.

Every year during winter and summer vacations and Chinese New Year, Zhao Tianyu and his wife would take their three children back to Beijing for a period of time, allowing Zhao Qingshan and his wife to enjoy family time.

Zhao Qingshan and Wu Meiyun were a loving couple who lived a peaceful and healthy life in their later years. In the winter of Zhao Qingshan's eighty-eighth year, the two passed away peacefully in their sleep, hand in hand.

For decades, Zhou Bingchen had been trying carefully to make amends to Zhao Zhenzhu.

Unfortunately, Zhao Zhenzhu didn't appreciate it much.

Zhao Zhenzhu never touched Zhou Bingchen's salary card.

Zhou Bingchen had no choice but to rack his brains to give Zhao Zhenzhu gifts. Birthdays and holidays were a given, but he would even buy her nice clothes, shoes, bags, and jewelry whenever he saw them.

Zhao Zhenzhu would always say "thank you" after receiving a gift.

Zhou Bingchen felt a pang of bitterness.

He is Zhao Zhenzhu's husband, so it is only right that he spends money on her. Why is Zhenzhu being so polite to him?

Zhou Bingchen was somewhat unwilling. Could he still have a chance to have Zhao Zhenzhu, who was so devoted to him?

Because of this lingering resentment, when Zhou Bingchen was eighty-two years old and on his deathbed, he held Zhao Zhenzhu's hand and asked, "Zhenzhu, if there is an afterlife, will we still be together? I promise I will love you well and protect you and your children, and I will not let you suffer even the slightest harm."

Zhao Zhenzhu hesitated for a moment.

The next life?

For the sake of the greater good, Zhao Zhenzhu, despite harboring some resentment, chose to spend her life with Zhou Bingchen. She also fulfilled her responsibilities as a wife, mother, and daughter.

Zhao Zhenzhu hasn't decided how she wants to live her next life yet.

"Pearls?" Zhou Bingchen's eyes were full of pleading.

Zhao Zhenzhu sighed and said, "Zhou Bingchen, you know I don't make promises lightly. In the next life, we might not meet again, or perhaps we won't even recognize each other!"

"If, and I mean if, life could be lived again, would you still choose to marry me?" Zhou Bingchen stared at Zhao Zhenzhu and asked stubbornly.

"..." Zhao Zhenzhu lowered her eyes and remained silent.

“Pearl…” Zhou Bingchen didn’t say anything more, and sighed in his heart.

Zhou Bingchen knew this very well.

If divorce hadn't affected his career and the future of his two children, Zhao Zhenzhu might have left him long ago.

He was greedy.

Since the damage has already been done, any subsequent compensation is meaningless to the injured party.
