Chapter 127
The dusk was like crushed purple grape juice, flowing over the slightly dilapidated red brick wall.
The shadows of Mu Qingxuan and Huo Changfeng were stretched out long on the muddy road.
The two went home hand in hand, but when they passed by Chen Hongxia's yard, they suddenly heard an angry roar, followed by the scream of a young woman.
Mu Qingxuan's steps suddenly stopped, and the fingers clutching Huo Changfeng's sleeves turned slightly white.
She thought something had happened to Chen Hongxia and subconsciously looked over there.
Inside the bamboo fence, the dim kerosene lamp shone through the holes in the window paper, casting several distorted human shadows on the courtyard wall.
"Get out of the way!" A sharp female voice suddenly rang out, accompanied by the sound of tearing cloth.
The gate was slammed open and a young woman in a floral shirt staggered out.
Her collar was crooked, the red mark on her collarbone was shocking, and her long black hair was tangled around her shoulders like weeds.
Mu Qingxuan gasped.
She remembered that the young woman was called Shi Jingyu and was a relative of Chen Hongxia's mother-in-law, Grandma Sun.
Hearing that something happened recently in her husband's family, Shi Jingyu came to Grandma Sun's house to stay for a few days.
On the day Mu Qingxuan returned to the village, she met Shi Jingyu.
"My cousin's daughter!"
Grandma Sun, with a hunched back, ran out with the help of a cane, a gleam in her cloudy eyes.
Her dry bark-like hand tightly grasped Shi Jingyu's wrist, pulling Shi Jingyu to prevent her from leaving: "My cousin, please don't leave. I was wrong today. I didn't take good care of that crazy woman Chen Hongxia, and ruined your and Hongtao's good fortune."
She emphasized the word "good thing" deliberately, and her cloudy eyes rolled around.
"Don't worry, my cousin, I will go and teach Chen Hongxia a lesson later to vent your anger."
Shi Jingyu suddenly shook off the hand, staggered back two steps, and hit his back heavily against the courtyard wall.
Her chest heaved violently, and she pointed at her flushed face and said sharply, "How are you going to pay back this slap?!"
In the moonlight, five finger marks on her face were clearly visible, a horrible red-purple color.
A trace of displeasure flashed across Grandma Sun's face, but then it turned into an expression of heartache. She stretched out her hand as if to touch Shi Jingyu's face, but the other party turned his head away in disgust.
She took her hand back and gritted her teeth as she said, "I'll slap Chen Hongxia ten times in the face later! If you're not satisfied, you can slap her yourself. With me here, Chen Hongxia will definitely not dare to resist!"
As she spoke, she spat fiercely on the ground and slammed her crutch heavily on the bluestone slab.
"That bitch deserves to be punished!"
Upon hearing this, Shi Jingyu became even angrier.
Her eyes were red, tears welling up in her eyes but she stubbornly refused to let them fall, she sneered.
"Well done, good fight! You Sun family are really good at scheming! You beat someone up and then pretend to be a good person, and you can cover up all the dirty deeds?"
She approached Grandma Sun suddenly. The bright red slap mark on her pale face was shocking. She poked her cheek hard with her fingers.
"Aunt, do you think this slap was given by Chen Hongxia?"
Grandma Sun rolled her cloudy eyes, and a look of doubt appeared on her wrinkled face: "Isn't it? That crazy woman Chen Hongxia has always disliked you..."
"My cousin beat me!"
Shi Jingyu's voice suddenly rose, her eyes were red, tears were welling up in her eyes but she stubbornly refused to fall.
She was so angry that she was shaking all over and her nails dug deep into her palms.
"You told me before that you had already discussed it with my cousin, and as long as I come over, the plan will be accomplished."
"Now you are doing this to me. Who do you think I am? Do you think I am a whore who can be summoned and dismissed at will?"
Grandma Sun’s face turned pale instantly, and the jujube wood cane in her hand fell to the ground with a clang.
She staggered forward, trying to grab Shi Jingyu with her dry hands, but was thrown away by the other person in disgust.
"My cousin, you misunderstood. It's not what you thought it meant! Hong Tao... he must have been confused for a moment! Let me explain..."
"Explanation? What else is there to explain?"
Shi Jingyu shouted hysterically, her voice full of despair and anger: "You Sun family are a bunch of liars!"
Just then, there was a loud noise in the house.
Chen Hongxia, with red eyes, stumbled out carrying a small bag.
Her hair was scattered messily on her face, her clothes were covered with dust, and her eyes were full of pain and determination.
She didn't even look at the two people arguing, bit her lip, turned around and ran out of the yard gate.
Seeing this, Grandma Sun didn't bother to comfort Shi Jingyu anymore. She picked up her crutches and wanted to chase after her: "Stop! You money-loser, stinky woman, come back here!"
Chen Hongxia stumbled out of the Chen family's yard.
Grandma Sun's curses from behind him came like a poisonous snake: "You rebellious bitch! If you have the guts, don't come back..."
She staggered and held onto the wall at the door, her nails digging into her palms, leaving bloody marks on them.
The night wind blew dust onto Chen Hongxia's face. She looked at the empty village road and suddenly lost her strength.
My mother’s home is in Qingshi Town, thirty miles away.
If she walked back, she might not get there before dawn.
Tears suddenly burst out, Chen Hongxia squatted on the ground, her shoulders shaking violently.
When she married into the Chen family eight years ago, Sun Hongtao vowed to protect her for the rest of her life.
But now...
"Where should I go..."
Her suppressed sobs dissipated in the thick night.
"Aunt Chen?"
A gentle female voice suddenly sounded.
Chen Hongxia looked up suddenly and saw Mu Qingxuan running towards her with her skirt lifted up. The scent of unknown wild flowers in her hair mixed with the evening breeze brushed past her nose.
Mu Qingxuan squatted down and reached out to gently wipe away the tears on her face. "What happened?"
This word of concern made Chen Hongxia's strong strength collapse.
She threw herself into Mu Qingxuan's arms, burst into tears, and clutched the other's sleeves tightly with her muddy hands.
"Qingxuan girl, can you let me stay at your house for one night? I promise, I will leave early tomorrow morning..."
There was despair and pleading in the crying.
Mu Qingxuan had never seen Aunt Chen like this and was shocked.
The next second, she reacted and hugged her trembling shoulders with heartache.
Mu Qingxuan looked up at Huo Changfeng, then took Chen Hongxia back home.
Huo Changfeng understood what they meant and followed them.
When he arrived at the gate of the courtyard, he stopped Grandma Sun who was chasing him outside the iron gate.
Grandma Sun raised her cane, spitting everywhere: "Let that bitch out! She wanted to run away, but it won't be that easy..."
"That's enough."
Huo Changfeng's cold voice was like an ice blade.
His figure was as tall as a pine tree, and his shadow completely enveloped Grandma Sun: "If you dare to make trouble again, I will throw you out."
His dark eyes flashed with a cold light.
Grandma Sun was frightened by the momentum. She opened her mouth but ultimately did not dare to move forward.
She stomped her feet and left cursing, the sound of her footsteps gradually fading away.
Seeing this, Huo Changfeng closed the door.
Inside the house, Mu Qingxuan poured a glass of warm water for Chen Hongxia and asked, "Aunt Chen, what happened?"
Chen Hongxia opened her mouth in despair and spoke.
