Chapter 27 Getting a Marriage Certificate
After dinner, Wen Yiyang was lying quietly on the hospital bed resting. At this time, the doctor came to see him for a follow-up examination. The doctor walked to Wen Yiyang's bedside, first greeted him with a smile, and then began to carefully perform various examinations on him.
The doctor gently picked up the stethoscope and placed it on Wen Yiyang's chest, listening to his heartbeat. He then untied the bandage and checked the healing of Wen Yiyang's wound. He found that the wound was healing well. He then opened the medical record, checked the previously recorded data, and analyzed and compared it with the current situation.
After a careful examination, the doctor finally looked up with a relieved smile on his face. He said to Wen Yiyang, "Young man, judging from the current examination results, your health has recovered quite well! This is really great. From today on, I will take over your follow-up treatment. My surname is Chen. If there is any situation in the future, your family members can come to my office. You should have a good rest!" After examining Wen Yiyang and introducing himself, the doctor left the ward.
"That's great, Yi Yang, thanks to Xixi who made nutritious porridge for you these two days. She added medicinal herbs that replenish qi and blood for you, so you can recover so quickly!" Aunt Wen said happily when she heard that her son's wound was healing quickly.
"Of course, Sister Xixi has been working so hard these past two days. Although I can only drink porridge now, the porridge is different every time, and it is nutritious and delicious!"
"Cousin Yi Yang, you just need to take good care of yourself. If you cooperate with the doctor's treatment, it won't be in vain that I cook this meal for you!" Jiang Ruoxi said.
"I will cooperate with the treatment and try to be discharged from the hospital as soon as possible!" Wen Yiyang promised.
Days passed one by one. Wen Yiyang's body gradually recovered after eating the food sent by Jiang Ruoxi with spiritual spring water. He was discharged from the hospital and went home to recuperate. With Wen Yiyang's discharge, Lu Tingxiao and the two Jiang brothers' vacations also ended, and they had to return to their respective units. Before Lu Tingxiao returned to the unit, the Lu and Jiang families met and decided on the wedding date for their children. The date was finally chosen as April 6, 1976, which was a suitable day for marriage. After seeing the three people off, life returned to normal.
In addition to practicing martial arts and studying, Jiang Ruoxi also took care of the family every day, and wrote letters to Lu Tingxiao in her free time. She wrote down her thoughts stroke by stroke on the letter paper, telling about the trivial matters at home and her own concerns.
Lu Tingxiao, who was far away in the army, would read Jiang Ruoxi's letters over and over again every time he received them. When his comrades teased him, he just smiled.
Time passed quickly, and in the blink of an eye it was mid-March 1975. The Jiang family began to prepare for the wedding. Jiang Ruoxi happily prepared her wedding dress.
However, just one week before the wedding, the unit Lu Tingxiao was in suddenly received an urgent mission. Lu Tingxiao was extremely anxious but helpless. He could only find time to call Jiang Ruoxi and tell her that the wedding date might be postponed. Although Jiang Ruoxi was disappointed, she still tried to remain calm and expressed her understanding.
When Jiang Ruoxi slowly put down the phone in her hand, an indescribable feeling of loss instantly surged into her heart. She stared blankly at the blue sky outside the window, feeling empty as if something important had been taken away from her heart.
In another week, it would be the wedding day for her and Lu Tingxiao. This should have been a time full of sweetness and anticipation, but at this moment, Lu Tingxiao had to temporarily leave her side because of a sudden urgent mission. This news was like a bolt from the blue, causing Jiang Ruoxi's originally excited heart to plummet to the bottom.
She sat quietly on the sofa, her hands twisted unconsciously, her eyes confused and helpless. She was worried that the mission Lu Tingxiao was assigned to was dangerous, and she was also afraid that he would be careless and get hurt during the mission, but Jiang Ruoxi knew in her heart that days like this would become a daily routine in the future.
Although Jiang Ruoxi understood that Lu Tingxiao, as a person with great responsibilities, had no choice but to take responsibility in the face of such an emergency, she still couldn't help feeling wronged and uncomfortable deep down. After all, a wedding is one of the most dreamy and important moments in every girl’s life! Now the groom is going to be absent, how can people not feel sad?
Jiang's parents felt very distressed when they saw their daughter's distraught look. Father Jiang patted Jiang Ruoxi on the shoulder and said, "Child, Tingxiao has no choice." Jiang Ruoxi forced a smile to respond to her father.
Jiang Ruoxi spent 10 days in anxiety, and finally on April 12, she received news that Lu Tingxiao's unit had successfully completed its mission and returned. After Lu Tingxiao returned to the army and summarized his mission, he rushed back without stopping. He knew that he had delayed his wedding with Ruoxi and felt full of guilt. Before leaving, he contacted the Lu family and the Jiang family, hoping to hold a grand wedding again to make up for Jiang Ruoxi. After discussing with the two families, he finally set the date on April 16.
When Lu Tingxiao stood at the door of the Jiang family, exhausted, Jiang Ruoxi was stunned. Lu Tingxiao hugged her tightly and whispered, "I'm sorry, Ruoxi, I'm back late!" Jiang Ruoxi burst into tears, and all her grievances disappeared at this moment.
Lu Tingxiao took out a ring and said to Jiang Ruoxi, "Ruoxi, I don't have many romantic words to say, but I have a passionate and determined heart. I will be loyal to you as I am to my motherland, and I will cherish you and love you, and make you the happiest woman in the world. Marry me, okay?" Everyone in the Jiang family gathered around and blessed them with smiles. Jiang Ruoxi burst into laughter and held out her hand: "Okay."
"Tomorrow, we'll go get the marriage certificate first, and then we'll hold the wedding!" Lu Tingxiao didn't want his wedding with Jiang Ruoxi to be improper. After getting the marriage certificate, they would have a protected military marriage.
Early the next morning, Lu Tingxiao and Jiang Ruoxi went to the department store and bought 1 jin of fruit candies and 1 jin of White Rabbit milk candies. They carried them to the Civil Affairs Bureau and walked into the bureau hand in hand. There were not many people in the hall. They walked to the window for marriage registration. The staff looked at them and saw that the man was handsome and the woman was pretty. They were a perfect match. Lu Tingxiao handed over their IDs. When the staff saw that they were a military marriage, their faces were instantly filled with respect.
When the staff guided the two to fill out the forms and handed them two marriage certificates with bright red seals, Jiang Ruoxi's eyes were slightly moist. She gently stroked the gold-plated words on the marriage certificate and handed it to Lu Tingxiao. Lu Tingxiao took the marriage certificate, thanked the staff, took out a handful of wedding candies from his bag and handed them to the staff. When the staff saw that there were fruit candies and White Rabbit milk candies, they knew that this young couple was not stingy and said congratulations.
After leaving the Civil Affairs Bureau, Lu Tingxiao held Jiang Ruoxi's hand tightly, his voice choking but firm: "From now on, I will spend my whole life loving you and protecting you." Jiang Ruoxi raised her eyes, tears gleaming in her eyes, but a happy smile hung on the corners of her mouth. She responded softly: "Me too, please give me your guidance for the rest of my life."
The marriage certificate of that era was like an award certificate, with no photo on it, so the two decided to go to the photo studio next to the Civil Affairs Bureau to take a wedding photo.
