Chapter 32 The Cellar

As soon as he entered the room, Su Dazhi saw Su Manao hiding at the foot of the bed. He ordered with a stern face, "Girl, don't sleep tonight. Keep an eye on your mother! If she runs away in the middle of the night, I'll skin you alive!"

Su Manao nodded blankly.

Recently, she has clearly felt that her mind is not as sharp as it used to be.

She suspected it was because the beads were missing, but she couldn't be sure.

She still hasn't figured out what happened tonight.

Why would Mom, who loves Third Brother so much, sign him up to go to the countryside?

Guan Yumei was left on the kang (a heated brick bed), lying there motionless.

After thinking for a moment, Su Manao decided to do as she had done during the days Su Zhenzhu was away: to cover herself with both of their blankets.

Mom is an adult, and adults shouldn't be afraid of the cold, right?

Su Ruyi returned to the storage room, bolted the door, and focused her gaze on the entrance to the cellar.

Yes, the opening to the cellar was in the storage room where she slept, which was usually covered by a tattered mat.

She moved the mat away.

What did the old man say? There's treasure on the second floor of the cellar.

How can a cellar have two levels?

Su Ruyi frowned and thought for a few seconds before she realized—it was the second floor below.

However, if I were to dig around in the cellar looking for the second floor, I would definitely make a commotion.

We need to find a time when everyone is away.

She was deep in thought when suddenly a burnt smell wafted over.

She rushed to the source of the smell—the kitchen—and saw flames roaring in the stove pit; someone had thrown in all the kindling to start the fire.

The only large iron pot in the house was already glowing red-hot.

Inside the pot was a pool of black, still-burning charred residue, which looked like lava rising from hell.

Su Ruyi squatted down and carefully examined the stove pit—these oiled wood pieces would probably burn out in about ten minutes.

Since there was no danger of fire, she clapped her hands and went back inside.

Su Tong also returned to the east wing.

When Su Jin saw him come in, she turned over and faced away from him.

Su Tong still heard sobbing.

“I always thought Mom’s favorite was the third child, but I never expected it to be you,” Su Jin said in a low voice.

"Second brother, we are all members of the Su family."

Mom's favorite surname is Guan, not Su.

The one surnamed Guan is the one who manages her family.

She probably signed you up to go to the countryside just to get the subsidies and then help her younger brothers—this isn't the first time she's done something like this.

"Try to think positively, second brother."

Su Tong appeared to be offering advice, but in reality, he was stirring up trouble.

Su Jin sat up abruptly, gritting her teeth, and said, "She married into the Su family; she's a daughter-in-law of the Su family! Isn't this betraying her own family?"

Su Tong sighed and said nothing more.

...

The next day was June 13th.

Early in the morning, before dawn, Su Dazhi banged on the door of the storage room.

Su Ruyi opened the door sleepily, and Su Dazhi immediately berated her, "You're so lazy! Get up and start cooking! We have something important to do today!"

Su Ruyi led Su Dazhi directly to the kitchen.

Seeing the pot with a large hole burned through it and the blackened, unidentified object around the edge, Su Dazhi's face turned as black as the bottom of the pot again.

He saw Su Manao cooking on a stool last night.

Without saying a word, Su Dazhi turned around and kicked open the door to the west wing.

Guan Yumei sat on the kang (a heated brick bed), her body covered in bruises, her eyes open and her face expressionless.

Su Manao woke up when she heard the noise.

Ignoring Guan Yumei's bruised and swollen face, Su Dazhi picked up Su Manao and carried her to the kitchen like a chick: "You just got me two thousand yuan in debt, and now you've burned the pot?"

"Dad, I was wrong! I can't cook, and Mom insisted that I do it all by myself without helping at all... Waaah... I knew I couldn't do it well... I'm sorry, Dad, I've let you down..." Su Manao immediately started to play the victim, crying so hard she could barely breathe.

"Sigh! Stop crying, stop crying!" Su Dazhi was easily swayed by this. "It's true what they say, marrying a bad wife brings misfortune to three generations!"

He gently placed Su Manao on the ground and even wiped away her tears.

Su Manao immediately ran away, saying, "Dad, I'm not eating breakfast, I'm going to school!"

A dozen seconds later, she grabbed her backpack and rushed out.

Su Dazhi glanced again at the messy stove.

He didn't understand why Su Ruyi had always been the one cooking, but had been replaced in the past few days.

When the jinx cooks, he never has any problems!

I wanted to ask Su Ruyi, but she had already disappeared.

Clearly, this pot is beyond saving; even if you try to fix it, it won't be able to be repaired.

He then remembered that his accumulated industrial coupons were also missing, and he wanted to buy a new pot, but now he had neither money nor coupons.

Is this how the family is going to go hungry?

He returned to the west wing and confronted Guan Yumei, demanding, "Did Su Yin also steal those two industrial vouchers?"

Guan Yumei was startled and quickly shook her head—she had also "lent" the industrial coupons to her third brother to buy the radio that the woman was insisting on.

After a night's rest, Guan Yumei had already regained her senses.

She realized that last night's events were a trap set for her by Su Tong and Su Ruyi, along with an outsider named Zheng.

But she couldn't understand why, if Su Ruyi did it, she would also sign up to go to the countryside.

There's something fishy about the lost household registration booklet.

If the household registration booklet and the money are kept together, whoever takes the household registration booklet will naturally also take the money.

However, one thing she was certain of was that her precious Su Yin had definitely taken the blame for someone else.
