Chapter 38: Shifting the blame

Zhou Zhilan disliked her sister-in-law very much.

Even though she was ruthless and always lent money to her husband and bought things for her son.

I just don't like her.

Because of her, she's incredibly simple-minded, and quite severely so.

She was even afraid that her son Guoping might catch her simple-mindedness if he spent too much time with this aunt.

Seeing Guan Yumei crying her heart out, she said softly, "Big sister, why don't you go back soon? It's quite a long way. If you don't leave soon, you won't make it home in time to cook dinner. You have so many children at home, won't they go hungry?"

That's a really poorly thought-out excuse.

Zhou Zhilan did it on purpose; she wanted Guan Yumei to feel her disrespect.

As for how much money Guan Yumei lent her man, she didn't care and had no intention of paying it back.

Are you kidding me? I haven't paid it back in all these years.

Guan Yumei volunteered.

Zhou Zhilan believed that Guan Yumei could still get the IOU from Su Dazhi, or she could just delay it.

In Zhou Zhilan's opinion, Su Dazhi was just as stupid as Guan Yumei, and he was also a clueless person.

But those two were lucky; they became workers in the city, unlike their families who still had to toil in the fields for a living.

Where can we seek justice?

Upon hearing Zhou Zhilan's words, Guan Yumei stopped crying, raised her face, which was swollen like a pig's head, and looked at her incredulously: "Zhilan, are you trying to get rid of me?"

"Big sister, what are you thinking?"

Zhou Zhilan glanced at Guan Yuzhu, who was about to explode, and said awkwardly, "I'm just a worrier, and I'm worried about you! My Guoping can't stand being hungry for even a minute, he'll throw a tantrum!"

Guan Yumei wiped away her tears: "It's only natural to spoil an only child."

Zhou Zhilan's face immediately darkened.

Guan Yuzhu quickly and gently scolded, "Big sister, what nonsense are you talking about!"

Zhou Zhilan suffered severe bleeding while giving birth to Guo Ping and had to have her uterus removed at the hospital.

Therefore, she devoted her entire life to caring for Guoping, her only son.

This was a painful memory for Zhou Zhilan, and her family never mentioned it to her.

When Zhou Zhilan had her hysterectomy, Guan Yumei, who was already pregnant with Su Tong, even went to the hospital to visit her.

Guan Yumei had always suspected that Zhou Zhilan's bad luck had transferred to her, which was why Su Tong had developed congenital heart disease.

Therefore, Guan Yumei also disliked Zhou Zhilan.

The two of them had always disliked each other.

After her hysterectomy, Zhou Zhilan's health never recovered. She was sickly for many years and never went to work again. Her third brother had to work himself to the bone to earn work points to support the family.

However, the third brother doted on his wife. When they were in the hospital, he immediately told the doctor to save the mother.

For so many years after giving birth to Guan Guoping, Zhou Zhilan had never cooked a single meal. Guan Yuzhu was the one who carried water and did laundry.

The younger brother, whom he raised like the apple of his eye, has become quite adept at managing both the household and the household ever since he married this woman.

She felt sorry for her younger brother; he had suffered so much!

For this reason, Guan Yumei even harbored a deep resentment towards Zhou Zhilan.

In her opinion, Zhou Zhilan wasn't even as pretty as her, yet men treated her so well. She thought Zhou Zhilan was a vixen, not a decent person.

Of course, she never said that.

But the subtle hostility between the two women was palpable to each other.

This time, when Guan Yumei said the words "only son," Zhou Zhilan felt that Guan Yumei had torn down the last shred of ties between them and declared war on her completely.

That's why Guan Yumei is considered stupid. She had just been abandoned by her husband at her parents' home, and she couldn't wait to provoke her third brother's wife.

After repairing the hoe, Guan Yuzhu picked up his lunchbox and went to work.

Zhou Zhilan returned to her room, closed the door, and secretly ate the meal that Guan Yuzhu had left for her that morning.

Guan Yumei hadn't eaten or drunk anything since morning. Unable to bear it any longer, she sneaked into the kitchen, only to find that there wasn't a single spark in the pot or on the stove, and not a single grain of food in sight.

She could only pick up a ladle, scoop out most of the water from the water vat, and swallow it.

After much thought, she still felt sorry for her younger brother. Even though her own head was swollen like a pig's, she rolled up her trousers and went to the fields to help her brother work for half a day, earning four work points.

That evening, Zhou Zhilan cooked for the first time ever.

She made two kinds of food. For Guan Yumei, she made two dark sorghum flour buns; for her own family, she made corn porridge and steamed buns made from a mixture of rice and wheat flour.

When Guan Yuzhu returned home, he was pleasantly surprised to find that his wife had actually cooked.

Guan Yumei deliberately dimmed the lights so that the entire dining table could not be seen.

Guan Yuzhu wiped his face and started eating, completely unaware that Guan Yumei was holding a black cornbread.

Guan Yumei coughed a few times and tried to signal to Guan Yuzhu with her eyes, but Guan Yuzhu was completely oblivious and kept eating.

There was also a dish of salted chives and a dish of steamed snails on the table.

The snails were caught by Guan Yuzhu from the river; Zhou Zhilan loved to eat them.

She used small pliers to remove the snails' tails one by one, cleaning them up thoroughly.

Although there wasn't much meat, at least it was some kind of animal.

Guan Yumei also really liked this dish, and with delight, she immediately reached for the snails with her chopsticks.

Unexpectedly, Zhou Zhilan reacted quickly, extending her chopsticks to block the attack.

Three times in a row.

Guan Yuzhu's face was buried in his rice bowl, but he must have seen it.

Guan Yumei's face darkened, and she cleared her throat.

However, Guan Yuzhu did not raise his head, but kept reaching for the plate of snails with his chopsticks.

Seeing that the snails were almost gone, Guan Yumei sighed and reached for the salted chives with her chopsticks.

This time, Zhou Zhilan didn't stop her.
