Chapter 68 Scapegoat

After carefully combing Su Manao's hair, Teacher Zhang took a washboard and went to the washroom to wash her clothes as well.

As she washed, she sighed, and her gaze towards Su Manao softened.

Looking at the row of her clothes hanging on the railing outside Teacher Zhang's dormitory, fluttering in the wind, Su Manao was in a great mood.

Teacher Zhang is so kind!

Su Manao finally rediscovered the feeling of being a lucky charm.

Having someone to wait on you, that's life!

Although she lost her loyal servant Su Ruyi, she gained an even more meticulous and caring teacher, Teacher Zhang!

It seems her good fortune has returned!

Su Manao began to ponder whether she herself was the Little Lucky Star or the agate bead was the Little Lucky Star. In the end, she came to the conclusion that the Little Lucky Star was herself, regardless of whether there was an agate bead or not!

That night, she slept soundly on Teacher Zhang's bed.

The 16th was Sunday, and Teacher Zhang went out early in the morning.

When they returned, they brought back millet porridge, steamed corn bread, and pickled vegetables for Su Manao.

She woke Su Manao up and helped her change into a well-fitting outfit, saying as she did so, "This is a set of clothes I got from Teacher Lin next door. It's her daughter's old clothes, and she said she'd give it to you!"

Su Manao lowered her head: "Thank you, Teacher Zhang, thank you, Teacher Lin."

The clothes are of very good quality; they are made of light yellow fabric with small floral patterns, and there is a small rabbit-shaped pocket on the chest.

After helping her wash up, Teacher Zhang smiled and handed her a stack of meal tickets: "This is enough for two days. Go to the teachers' canteen for meals, and come back here to sleep tonight, okay?"

Su Manao hugged Teacher Zhang tightly: "Teacher, where are you going? Don't go!"

"You're such a grown-up girl, aren't you ashamed?" Teacher Zhang laughed and pushed her away. "I have to take leave today to go back to my hometown. I'll be back tomorrow afternoon."

Teacher Zhang's home is in a county town on the outskirts of Haicheng.

Her parents introduced her to a potential partner a while ago; he worked at the Haicheng Revolutionary Committee.

She was going back this time to meet her blind date's parents and several uncles and aunts with her parents. The whole family would have dinner together and discuss the engagement.

The man is very well-off, and she feels she's marrying above her station, so she takes him very seriously.

"No, teacher! I won't let you go back! You have to stay with me!"

Upon hearing that Teacher Zhang was leaving, Su Manao immediately twisted her body and started acting spoiled, "Why don't you take me back with you?"

Little did she know that she was no longer that fair-skinned and rosy-cheeked little lucky star.

Although she had taken a shower and combed her hair, the thick blackness on her face hadn't dissipated, making her look like a mischievous monkey.

Teacher Zhang was a little unhappy.

What's the deal with her going on a blind date with a teenager?

I bathed her, washed her clothes, and even gave her meal tickets. How could this child be so ungrateful?

Her face turned cold: "No, I can't take you."

Seeing the momentary disappointment on Su Manao's face, Teacher Zhang's heart softened again.

She sighed, took the key from her waistband, and threaded it with a red string.

Then, she solemnly hung it around Su Manao's neck: "This is my dormitory key. Can you keep it for me for the next couple of days? Don't take it off even when you sleep, or you won't be able to get in!"

After saying that, she didn't look at Su Manao, who was standing there pouting, and picked up her bag and left.

Su Manao stood there, pouting and holding back tears.

But after waiting for several minutes, Teacher Zhang still hadn't returned.

She paused for a moment, then looked up at the drawer on Teacher Zhang's desk.

He looked down at the keys around his neck.

There are two in total, one large and one small.

Just now, she watched as Teacher Zhang used the small key to open the drawer on the table and took out the meal ticket for her.

She rushed to the window and saw that Teacher Zhang was about to leave the school.

Since Teacher Zhang is so heartless, then... don't blame her!

Su Manao's lips twitched, and she turned around and locked the door.

Immediately, she used the small key around her neck to open the drawer.

I immediately spotted the meal tickets that had just been taken out; they were a large stack clipped together with big metal clips.

Further inside were some letters, which she wasn't interested in and flipped through haphazardly.

At the very back of the drawer, she found two tin boxes, each slightly larger than her palm. The top one was purple, with the words "A Riot of Colors" printed on its lid.

She knew it was face cream because she had found it at the entrance of the supply and marketing cooperative.

But this is clearly not face cream, because it is much lighter and can be easily picked up with two fingers.

She struggled for a long time before finally unscrewing the box, and then her eyes widened—it was full of money!

Great unity!

The folds are neatly stacked into squares, creating a brand new and perfect unity!

She swallowed hard and counted; there were 17 in total.

One hundred and seventy yuan!

Su Manao immediately stuffed the money into the breast pocket of her new clothes, then sniffed and reached out again.

In another tin box of Friendship Skin Cream, she found a bunch of tickets and certificates.

She glanced through them and found four industrial coupons, 100 jin of grain coupons, and 10 jin each of sugar and oil coupons.

The most common item was meat ration coupons, weighing a full thirty jin (approximately 15 kg).

There's also a bicycle ticket!

Unbeknownst to her, most of these tickets were prepared by Teacher Zhang's fiancé for their engagement, which was to be held in Haicheng, so they entrusted them entirely to her.

Even for her boyfriend's family, these receipts and certificates were accumulated over a long period of time.
