Chapter 9 County Town 3

Most of what can be done has been done.

Meng Sheng felt the stack of money in his pocket and decided to splurge for once. He found a private hotel near the county middle school and stayed there.

The economy slowly recovered and the flow of people increased. It was not the first time that the boss on night shift had received someone who wanted to stay overnight. He didn't ask anything, just asked for fifty cents, threw out a key, told the room number, pointed out where the toilet and bathroom were, and then closed his eyes and dozed off.

Meng Sheng was happy and didn't need to explain too much. He found a place to wash up, rinsed his dirty clothes, and hung them on the chair by the window before lying down on the bed.

Just thinking about the box hidden in the mountains and the letter he had sent out, he was still a little excited. After reviewing his plan, he forced himself to close his eyes, empty his mind and fell asleep.

Having not slept much for two days and one night, Meng Sheng slept until dawn before he opened his eyes in a daze.

Looking at the unfamiliar house, it took a moment of confusion for me to remember my dream-like experience and current situation.

He immediately got up, dressed, washed his face, checked out and left the guesthouse.

Go directly to the middle school next door.

He did not forget that another purpose of going into the city this time was to bring his younger brother home.

Baishui Middle School was rebuilt from an ancient temple. It covers a large area and is nestled against the mountains and beside the water. There are many courtyards connected to each other. There are also some towering old trees standing in the school, but the shadows of Bodhisattvas and Buddhas are no longer visible.

Now that the school is about to go on vacation, the school gate is bustling with students and parents carrying large and small bags coming in and out.

The gatekeeper was too lazy to check everyone one by one, so he just became a decoration.

Meng Sheng walked quickly into the school and asked a few students before he found the row of dormitories where the first-year students were located. The old, low brick and tile houses were connected to each other, almost identical, with only the grades and classes written in vermilion on the doors to distinguish them.

He was just thinking about which class his younger brother was in when he heard someone behind him call out, "Second brother, why are you here?"

Now high school students only have one day off a week, and there is not enough time to go home and back. In a semester, Meng Qiang can't go home twice.

Usually, it is my eldest brother and father who send money and food.

Therefore, after not seeing Meng Sheng for several months, he missed his second brother who always bullied him. When he saw him from afar, he shouted in surprise and ran towards him.

The boy had a thin build, and his washed-out blue shirt was a little short, with the hem barely covering his belly button, dangling from his body.

His cheeks were so thin that only bones were left, but his particularly prominent eyes were bright and sparkling.

Meng Sheng was also very happy to see his brother whom he hadn't seen for decades, but he looked like this and people couldn't help but frown. If his skin was a little darker, he would look like an African refugee. However, with people coming and going around, he couldn't say much, so he just said, "I know you have a holiday, so I came to take you home.

Have you packed your things?

Hurry up and get the things, Uncle Chengliang is still waiting for us at Uncle Jiefang's house to go back to the village together!"

When Meng Qiang heard this, he didn't care about getting close to his second brother and replied, "I almost finished collecting it yesterday. Wait a minute, it will be done soon!"

As he spoke, he ran into a room and started moving things out one after another.

Books, clothes, bedding, buckets, porcelain basins and other things soon piled up into a small pile at Meng Sheng's feet.

Meng Sheng, who had been poor all his life, had no awareness of having just become rich. After his younger brother moved out all the luggage, he followed the others out of the school, carrying quilts and buckets.

The person who just said he was in a hurry didn't rush to Meng Jiefang's house when he got to the street.

Instead, he took his younger brother to a restaurant and ordered a bunch of food.

"Two bowls of shredded pork noodles, eight meat buns, and two servings of egg and chive dumplings!"

This sentence made the restaurant owner respond with a smile on his face, but also made Meng Qiang gasp in pain. If he wasn't so shy, he would have asked the owner to return all these.

There are three brothers in the family. In the past two years, in order to help the eldest brother find a wife, the family emptied out their family savings to build a house for each of them.

Now my eldest brother is getting married, I am studying, and my second brother is not young anymore and needs to start looking for girls, so everything requires money.

We could have had a five-cent cornmeal pancake and a free bowl of vegetable soup for breakfast for two people for only twenty cents, but now it costs more than two dollars.

Meng Qiang, who had been worrying about the daily necessities of the family early in the morning, looked at the food that was soon served on the table, swallowed his saliva and glared at Meng Sheng.

There were three big words clearly written in his eyes: Prodigal son!

Meng Sheng ignored his brother's gaze and just stuffed food into his mouth.

Meng Qiang was unwilling to be left behind when he saw this. The two brothers grabbed the food and stuffed it into their stomachs until they were full.

When we checked out and left the restaurant, the sun was already high in the sky.

The two men did not dare to delay any longer and carried their luggage to Meng Jiefang's house.

The alley was no different than usual, with the sounds of adults calling out to children and the clashing of pots and pans, full of the atmosphere of everyday life.

When I got outside the yard, I could hardly hear any movement inside.

Meng Qiang went forward and knocked on the door a few times. It was Meng Huan who came out to open the door. His eyes and nose were red from crying, and he didn't look happy when he looked at the two of them.

He snorted and turned back to the yard.

Seeing this, Meng Sheng felt relieved. He thought that Hong Ying's family had already known about this matter, and that he had written the letter in vain.

Looking inside through the open door, I saw seven or eight grown men standing in the small yard, all with sullen faces and silent.

Meng Jiefang and Meng Chengliang stood in the middle with their heads hung low. Both of them had footprints on their bodies and fresh wounds on their faces.

Meng Sheng looked confused, but in his heart he felt refreshed, as if he had drunk a bottle of ice water on a hot day. Sure enough, Meng Jiefang had done what happened to Meng Le without telling the Hong family.

He said that there was no woman in the world who could take care of her husband and another man's son under her nose every day.

Now it depends on whether Hong Ying is prepared to swallow her anger or break up with Meng Jiefang.

Meng Qiang, who knew nothing, faced the sharp gazes of the people in the yard. He was trembling with fear and at a loss, his voice stuttering: "I, I, I..."

I nodded a few times, but couldn't say anything else.

Hong Ying, who was standing in the middle of the courtyard, knew the two brothers' intentions and said directly, "Meng Sheng, Meng Qiang, you should go back to the village first. Meng Chengliang has something to tell us, so we'll be delayed for a while!"

His tone was calm, almost rigid, and there was some redness in the corners of his eyes, but his body was still straight, his hair was meticulously combed, and he tried his best to maintain his last bit of dignity and decency.

Meng Sheng sighed in his heart, he didn't even call me brother.

He glanced at the two brothers Meng Chengliang, whose faces were bruised and they kept their heads down without saying a word. He felt a little sorry that he couldn't watch the show in person, but he still obediently pulled his younger brother and turned around to leave this dangerous place.

After leaving the courtyard, Meng Qiang asked his second brother in confusion, "What happened with such a big scene?"

Meng Sheng didn't intend to tell his incredible experience, and casually said: "When I arrived yesterday evening, he was fine. I stayed in the guesthouse at night.

I just went there with you, how should I know what’s going on with them?”

After the words fell, he continued: "Don't worry too much about other people's affairs. Now we should worry about how to get home."
