"Do those two not know that Sister Liu is looking for a partner?" Wu Zhiqi asked again. He had been so busy buying things for Old Man Guan these past two days that he hadn't had a chance to ask Sister Liu.
"They probably don't know. If they did, they'd be making a huge fuss. Why would they let you come pick them up so quietly? Stop dawdling and hurry up. I reckon that couple will come back later, maybe to bring that paralyzed old man." The neighbor grabbed another handful of candy.
Wu Zhiqi stuffed the remaining candy into the hands of her neighbor, saying, "Hey little sister, if anyone didn't get any, could you help them out? We're leaving now."
The woman beamed, "Alright, leave it to me. You guys go ahead and don't worry. When that couple comes, we won't tell them what Sister Liu went to do."
That's what Wu Zhiqi meant; at the very least, today should be a quiet day.
"Thank you for your hard work, little sister," Wu Zhiqi said before going inside.
"Uncle Guan, Sister Liu, we've got everything, let's go."
“Alright, let’s go, my dear,” Old Man Guan said, pulling Sister Liu along.
Before leaving, Sister Liu gave some rice, flour, oil, vegetables, and meat from the kitchen and refrigerator to her neighbor.
Another burst of firecrackers went off, and the car left the alley.
"That old man is a bit ugly, but he looks quite imposing," the neighbors said as they gathered together.
"At this age, why bother with looking good? It's all loose. What's the use of looking good? A good physique and good physical condition are what really matter. Just look at the candy they're handing out; you can tell they're in good shape."
"Isn't this better than marrying a cripple? I wonder if those two will be furious when they show up later."
"Hey, let's not tell anyone. If they ask, we'll just say we don't know. Little Liu finally found a partner; we can't let those two bastards ruin it," said the old lady who had just taken a bag of candy.
"Yes, we won't say anything, we'll just watch those two wander around aimlessly, driving them crazy."
The neighbors burst into laughter.
On the Li family's side, after the car arrived at the gate, firecrackers were set off again. Sister Liu and Old Man Guan entered the courtyard separately, because the community was large and they were afraid that someone would recognize Old Man Guan.
The Li family's building is decorated with large red "double happiness" characters.
Aunt Liu's face flushed. "You're so old, why are you doing all this?"
"Uncle Guan isn't satisfied yet; he'd love to have a red carpet laid out," the loudspeaker joked.
"He just squanders money," Sister Liu scolded playfully.
On the top floor, there was a large red "double happiness" character, a red carpet at the entrance, and red balloons inside.
Old Man Guan pulled Sister Liu into the house first, saying, "How is it? If there's anything you're not satisfied with, we can add it."
"What else do you need to add? Don't waste your money," Sister Liu patted Old Man Guan on the shoulder.
Old Guan grinned. At his age, this was the first time he had ever decorated his new house so elaborately. Looking at Sister Liu, he felt at ease, knowing that he truly had a home now, without any ulterior motives.
"Brother, your house is nice, can you buy one for me?" Old Man Guan, who was feeling touched, was interrupted by this voice.
"I owe you! I'm getting married, and instead of giving me a set, you made me buy one for you. How can you be so shameless?" Old Man Guan retorted to Guan Yi in annoyance.
Guan Yi chuckled, not angry at all. "Sister-in-law, hello. I'm your brother-in-law, Guan Yi. I'm just a simpleton, you can't just abandon me, can you?"
Sister Liu was completely bewildered. Didn't Old Man Guan have no relatives?
She didn't know about Guan Yi's situation.
"Your sister-in-law doesn't even know you exist. You'd better go cool off somewhere else. Wait, I'm getting married, you can't just show up empty-handed, can you?" Old Man Guan glared at Guan Yi. If Guan Yi dared not to bring anything, he would expel Guan Yi from the clan.
Guan Yi felt threatened. "You are completely unqualified to be the head of the family. I should take over."
"Stop talking nonsense, it's time to give gifts," Old Man Guan said bluntly.
