The sister-in-law sneered inwardly. The couple had been laid off twice and now only did odd jobs while also supporting their child's schooling. How could she possibly know they had 100,000 yuan?
"How much do you have? Give me as much as you have," Dong Yun said urgently.
Sister-in-law: "Big sister, didn't you say the other day that your husband made a lot of money in the stock market? You bought a car, and your child is going to summer and winter camps and even attending an international school. Why are you borrowing money from us?"
"The stock market hasn't been doing well lately, and all our money is tied up in it. Once the stock market recovers, I'll pay you back with interest," Dong Yun explained.
"No, sister, what kind of tuition are you paying now? The semester is already halfway over, isn't it?" the sister-in-law asked.
The younger brother looked at Dong Yun with confusion.
"I didn't pay this semester's fees, and the school is pressing me hard. I can't let my child's schooling be delayed, so I'm thinking of borrowing some from you first," Dong Yun had no choice but to tell the truth.
The younger brother and his wife exchanged a glance.
The younger brother said, "Big sister, if you ask me, you should transfer your child to another school. The middle school in our district doesn't cost any money, and the teaching quality is good. There's no need to spend hundreds of thousands a year on some international school."
Nobody borrows money to attend a prestigious private school; it's not like there's no school to attend.
"Don't worry about that. I'm just borrowing money, so don't worry about what I'm doing with it. It's not like I'm not going to pay you back." Dong Yun couldn't stand the thought of not letting her child go to an international school.
"Sister, don't be so concerned about saving face. Your child is doing very well in school. As long as he can get into a good university, it doesn't matter where he studies. You can save that money for your child to study abroad or buy a house later. Isn't that better than giving it to the school?" His sister-in-law also advised.
"My family's affairs are none of your business. Just tell me if you're willing to lend the money or not," Dong Yunqiang said, suppressing her anger. Apart from herself, no one else wanted anything good for her child.
The sister-in-law's eyelids drooped. "Big sister, we really don't have any money. Our child is in high school this year, and tutoring costs at least a thousand yuan a week. The money your brother and I earn is simply not enough. We've been living off our savings. We'll have to borrow some more money for these three years of high school. University living expenses are also considerable, and after graduation, we'll need to buy a house and get married. Your brother and I are under a lot of pressure. No matter how much money we earn, we both have to go out and work. We can't afford to be idle for even a day."
My sister-in-law wasn't lying; they were just an ordinary family. Both of them had been laid off one after another and had never earned much money. They were just supporting their child and making ends meet.
"I helped you all get married before I got married, and this is how you repay me?" Dong Yun questioned her younger brother.
The younger brother blushed and said, "Big sister, I really didn't. Don't you know how capable I am?"
"Big sister, you protect your younger brother and sister-in-law, and they appreciate it, but they can't risk their lives to make money for you. You have children, but they have children too. They can't let our children drop out of school just to help you. We're not ungrateful, but we don't have the resources to help. We can't just starve ourselves."
"Big sister, I only have 20,000 yuan on me, you can take it." The younger brother ignored his sister-in-law's expression. He thought about how hard his older sister had worked to raise him, and now that she needed his help, he should help her.
"It's just 20,000 yuan. Give it to your older sister. Is your son no longer going to tutoring or college? If it were a matter of life and death, I certainly wouldn't say anything else. Her daughter is also in school, and she's going to a prestigious school. What good is this little bit of money?" The sister-in-law was unhappy.
Dong Yun was furious. "It's none of your business, you outsider!"
"Me, an outsider? I've been with your brother for over twenty years, enduring hardship and toil. Me, an outsider? You're the wife, go live with your brother!" The sister-in-law angrily went straight back into the house, smashing things loudly.
"Big sister, how can you talk like that?" the younger brother said, also displeased.
Dong Yun: "What can I say? I'm your own sister. This is the first time I've asked you for a little money, and she keeps nagging me. It's not that I don't want to pay her back, but she's acting like she's asking for my life."
