After thinking everything through, he discussed it with Xiaoyuer and Dongyun. The mother and daughter were fed up with this poor life. The house was small and dilapidated, and the water inside would freeze in winter. They had to walk a long way to use the toilet. They thought that if they could move to the big house they lived in, that would be great.
The three of them reached an agreement and discussed it for two days before taking action.
Unexpectedly, the third brother exposed him when they arrived.
For the first time, Li Xingguo felt that his third brother was smarter than him. His plan, which he thought was perfect, was easily seen through, just like his life, which was a failure.
He thought a lot about it. Passing by a bookstore, he went in and bought several books, including Sun Tzu's Art of War, psychology, family relationships, and so on.
"Don't waste your money. What's the point of buying it? It's neither food nor drink," Dong Yun mumbled.
Li Xingguo glanced at Dong Yun. Why were all the women he chose so stupid? His third wife could see through their intentions at a glance. Logically speaking, he and his third wife should be on the same side. If he had married a cultured and insightful woman, wouldn't someone have stopped him when he did something stupid, and wouldn't his life have turned out like this?
Li Xingguo ignored Dong Yun and the couple went home. Xiaoyuer hadn't returned home yet, so Li Xingguo called Xiaoyuer.
Xiaoyuer was in an internet cafe, her hands flying across the keyboard, a thin cigarette dangling from her mouth. At the next few computer stations were boys and girls around her age, their hair dyed in various colors.
Seeing that it was Li Xingguo calling, Xiaoyuer quickly stubbed out her cigarette, waved her arms to shoo away the smoke around her, answered the phone, and asked softly, "Is he here yet?"
No, let's go home.
"What do you mean? They won't come out to look for me? I'm missing, and they still won't come out to look for me. Are they even human?" Xiaoyuer was furious. She had been in a good mood these past two days, and her friends had even helped her rehearse several times how to complain to her grandparents and ask to live with them. She had memorized the lines perfectly, but no one showed up.
"How dare you talk like that, little girl? Come back right now," Li Xingguo said in a stern voice.
"I'm not going back! How can you all be so useless? My grandpa loves me very much. He would never abandon me. Have you even seen my grandpa? I don't want to stay in that lousy house for even a minute longer! If you can't let me go back to live a good life with my grandparents, I won't go back!" Xiaoyuer slammed the keyboard down. She wanted to think about her old life and never wanted to go back to that shabby rented room again.
Li Xingguo was panting heavily. He used to think that his daughter was perfect in every way and full of advantages, but ever since he fell on hard times, his idealized image of her has shattered. After transferring back to a regular school, Xiaoyuer's grades plummeted, and she even blamed him, saying that he was the one who made her look down on by her classmates, who isolated and ridiculed her. Now she's never home and hangs out with a bunch of unruly hooligans.
"Then never come back!" Li Xingguo angrily hung up the phone.
Dong Yun was lying in bed, her face in excruciating pain. Upon hearing Li Xingguo's words, she sprang up from the bed.
“Li Xingguo! How could you talk to your daughter like that!” Dong Yun questioned incoherently.
"It's all because of your good daughter, you spoiled her rotten. She's no decent human being, always fooling around and never learning anything good. How am I supposed to talk to her like that!" Li Xingguo pointed at Dong Yun in a fit of rage.
"Isn't it all your fault for being incompetent? If our daughter were still in international school, would things be like this? I don't want to stay in this lousy house, let alone the child. It's all your fault, all your fault, you've ruined us." Dong Yun was also furious. He was incompetent, how could he blame the child? If he hadn't been incompetent, would they have to live such a miserable life?
