Xingping lowered his head and dared not utter a sound.
Li Mantun: "And your son, we won't hide anything from him. Don't raise a good-for-nothing like you."
"Dad, the child is still young and doesn't understand anything. Don't tell him," Xingping pleaded.
Li Mantun scoffed, "If we don't tell him, he'll think we're the ones who broke up his parents. If you're worried, you can take care of him yourself or let him stay with his mother. I definitely won't stop you. Don't think I owe you anything or that I'm willing to take care of you."
Xingping dared not utter a sound. The child's mother was incapable of raising the child, and if the child stayed with his mother, he would be pointed at and gossiped about, which would ruin him.
Xingping's phone rang again. Xingping hung up, but the other end kept calling, and if he didn't answer, they would keep calling.
Li Mantun glanced at the phone. "Think it through yourself. If you don't want to leave, don't bother Fengchun and Lao San. Nobody owes you anything."
After saying that, Li Mantun slammed the door shut, which startled Xingping.
Liu Cuihua saw Li Mantun return with a livid face. "What's wrong?"
"Go ask your good son. He's been contacting people behind our backs. He seems to have softened his heart," Li Mantun said irritably.
Liu Cuihua, with dead fish eyes, said, "He's my son! Give me back my son! He's not your child! Contact him, and he should be prepared to get out of the house. He has no money. Let's see if that woman can stay with him. What a spineless bastard!"
Liu Cuihua and Li Mantun thought the same thing: they would rather lose their son than let that woman taint their home.
The next morning, Fengchun and Zhang Tao came early to say goodbye to their families.
Xingping, with red and swollen eyes, was pulling two suitcases.
The old lady lifted her eyelids slightly. "If you're unwilling to leave, then don't leave. It's like someone is forcing you."
Xingping forced a smile. "Grandma, I can't bear to leave home. I might not be back for years."
The old man said, "We have people to take care of us in our old age, so don't worry about us. A man's ambition should lie in all directions. Have some backbone, go out and make a name for yourself, not for others, but so you can hold your head high."
Xingping's eyes reddened again. "Master, I understand. I won't let you down."
"Hmm, have a safe journey." The old man glanced at his grandson a few more times; this departure might be the last time he saw him.
"Grandpa and Grandma, I'm leaving," Xingping choked out, and walked away without looking back.
Li Mantun and Liu Cuihua's eyes stung with tears. They didn't expect their child to be very successful; they just hoped he would have some self-respect and not be led by the nose by others in the future.
Fengchun and Zhang Tao took Xingping onto the train, during which time Xingping's phone kept ringing.
"The phone is ringing, aren't you going to answer it?" Feng Chun asked.
Xingping gave an awkward laugh, said, "I'm going to the restroom," and then hurriedly left his seat.
Zhang Tao shook his head. "Second Uncle and Second Aunt are probably going to be disappointed."
Feng Chun also stood up. "Without hope, there will be no disappointment. I'll go take a look."
Zhang Tao pulled Feng Chun back, saying, "Forget it, let's just pretend we don't know anything and go outside."
