When Cao Jun came out, he was covered in excrement and didn't notice that the door was open or that there was someone at the door. He had heard the commotion earlier and thought that Liang Lijun had called an ambulance to take his father-in-law to the hospital. No matter how much he washed, he felt unclean, and the smell was so strong that he took a little longer to wash. He didn't expect the door to be wide open and that there were police officers there.
Cao Jun quickly dressed and came out, wiping his nose. "Police officer?"
Police officer: "Are you Cao Jun? The son-in-law of this family?"
Cao Jun nodded hastily.
Police: "Someone reported you to the police for abusing the elderly. We need to get some information from you."
Cao Jun...he abused the elderly? He was the one being abused, okay?
"No, officers, is there some misunderstanding?"
"What misunderstanding? Your father-in-law almost died in the house. Who opens a window naked in the dead of winter? What did you feed your father-in-law that caused him to have diarrhea like that?" The neighbor wasn't afraid to offend Cao Jun. The people living here were all from Liang Guangming's work unit and had a closer relationship with Liang Guangming.
"You're accusing me of something by saying that. I cooked some porridge this morning, and I ate it myself. There's some left over in the kitchen. If you don't believe me, you can have it tested. I'm taking care of the elderly, so why would I want him to have diarrhea? If he has diarrhea, I'll have to clean up after him."
After feeding my dad, I went to work. Just as I got to my office, Lijun called to say Dad had diarrhea and she couldn't handle it, so I rushed back. The house smelled terrible, so I opened the window a little, thinking I'd be done changing quickly. But then, Dad had diarrhea too, and he spilled it all over me. I told Lijun to come inside while I washed up. I had initially thought Lijun had called an ambulance.
Cao Jun's explanation was reasonable and open, and he showed it to the police without any fear of having it tested.
The neighbors scoffed. Liang Lijun was a good-for-nothing; seeing her father like that, she actually abandoned him and ran away.
The police called Liang Lijun again. Liang Lijun had been so frightened by the scene she witnessed that she ran out of the community and squatted by the roadside vomiting for a long time. She planned to go back after Cao Jun finished cleaning up, but instead, she received a call from the police. She quickly took a taxi to the hospital. Now the police came to verify the situation, and she quickly explained what had happened. It wasn't that they were abusing the elderly; it was just a complicated story.
After understanding the situation, the police told Cao Jun to be more careful when taking care of the elderly in the future, and then left.
Cao Jun slammed the door shut, shutting out a group of gossipy neighbors. He was furious, his head spinning. Was Liang Lijun stupid? Why was she running away? And she didn't even close the door! She'd made a complete fool of herself.
As soon as the door closed, Cao Jun started vomiting again. He quickly opened all the windows in the room, threw away all the blankets and quilts in Liang Guangming's room, and cleaned up the excrement that was sprayed everywhere. Cao Jun vomited so hard that he almost threw up his stomach.
After finishing his preparations, he rushed to the hospital.
In the hospital, Liang Guangming was receiving an IV drip, while Liang Lijun and her brother sat on either side of the hospital bed.
“Lijun, even though I’ve severed ties with Dad, you should have let me know he’s sick,” Liang Lijun’s brother said.
Liang Lijun glanced at her elder brother. "You know you've severed ties. Whenever you're mentioned, Dad shakes his head, clearly not wanting to see you. What can I do? Do you think I want to serve you?"
Brother Liang choked, "I was angry back then. Mom was only gone for a few days, and Dad was so impatient. Mom worked hard her whole life, what does she mean to him?"
Liang Lijun waved her hand and said, "Brother, Dad is already like this, and that old lady has run away. There's no point in saying these things. Cao Jun and I take time off work every day to take care of Dad. He's in bed eating and defecating, and no one wants to hire a caregiver. It's good that you're here today. What do you suggest we do?"
Even if Liang Lijun wants all the property, she can't show it now that her elder brother is here. Given Liang Guangming's situation, her elder brother would be better off backing down.
