The classmates parted ways at the crossroads, each going home to their own mothers. Yuanyuan went to the small supermarket at the street corner, bought a Coke, opened it, took a sip, let out a satisfied burp, and felt incredibly happy and content.
He slowly walked home, drinking the cola as he went. He had to finish it before he got home, or his mom would definitely pinch his thigh.
Yuanyuan looked around, her steps unsteady, her body twisted like a pretzel.
"Hey, little one, can you read?" An old lady walked over from the other side.
Yuanyuan... How old is he? He can't read. Although he's not good at studying, he loves his country. How could he not know Chinese characters?
Seeing the old lady's hunched back, indicating her advanced age, Yuanyuan swallowed back the words that were on the tip of her tongue. He was a well-mannered and polite young man.
"Grandma, I can read. Do you need any help?"
"Yes, yes, I need to come to my son's house in Beijing, but I can't read. I got off the train and went to the wrong place. I don't know how I ended up here. Fatty, can you help Grandma see where this address is? Which train should I take?" The old lady tremblingly took out a piece of paper from her bosom.
Yuanyuan: "Grandma, why didn't you ask your son to pick you up? This isn't close to the train station, how did you manage to walk here?"
"My son isn't allowed to bring a phone to work, so I can't contact him. I asked around all the way here, and I just followed the directions people gave me," the old woman said with a pained expression.
Yuanyuan felt sorry for the old lady and took the paper. "Then she should be around here. Let me take a look."
Yuanyuan glanced at it and saw that it was a residential area near the school. "Grandma, just keep walking straight ahead. When you see the school, turn around and go through a small grove of trees. Walk a few dozen meters more and you'll be there."
The old woman's cloudy eyes looked in the direction Yuanyuan was pointing. "Which way?"
"Yes, after you pass the school, turn at the first intersection and go straight. The first residential area on your left is it," Yuanyuan said clearly.
"Fatty, could you take Grandma there? I'm afraid if I go the wrong way, I won't be able to find my way in the dark," the old lady said pitifully to Yuanyuan.
Yuanyuan glanced in the direction of her home and decided it wouldn't hurt to go. She could come back with Youyou and Tuantuan. "Okay, I'll take you to the entrance of the complex."
"Alright, alright, you're such a good chubby boy. You've certainly not wasted your education. You don't mind an old lady like me, especially since it's the capital city, where there are good people everywhere," the old lady said, offering her compliments.
Yuanyuan blushed with pride after being praised, and led the old lady towards the neighborhood.
As she passed the school, Yuanyuan glanced inside.
"Little chubby boy, are we almost there? When we get to Grandma's house, Grandma will make you something delicious," the old lady said with a smile.
"No need, Grandma. My parents are still waiting for me at home. They'll worry if I get home late."
The two people were passing by the school and turned at the first intersection.
As Tuantuan came out of the stationery store, she saw Yuanyuan's back across the street. "Sis, isn't that Yuanyuan? Why is he going that way?"
Youyou looked up and saw that Yuanyuan and the old lady had already turned the corner.
"He probably went to his classmate's house to fool around. He's useless at everything except eating."
Tuantuan: "Let's ask him to come home together, otherwise Mom will get angry again."
"We should let Mom teach him a lesson and let him swagger all day long." That's what she said, but her feet walked in the direction Tuan Tuan pointed.
After turning the corner and walking a few dozen meters, they reached the grove of trees. Yuanyuan pointed to the entrance of the residential area and said, "Grandma, that's the residential area. You can go in yourself."
