"It's Yuanyuan's voice inside, it really is your home," Dong Yun said, peering through the crack in the door.
"Sir, there's a thief!" Yuanyuan took off her shoes and smashed them against the door.
The door prevented it from hitting Dong Yun, but it gave him a fright.
"What's wrong with you, child? You have no manners at all!" Dong Yun scolded as soon as he opened his mouth, and Xiao Yu'er quickly tugged at Dong Yun's sleeve.
Dong Yun quickly suppressed her anger.
"Dad, it's Xingguo. Yuanyuan, come open the door for Uncle."
“My uncle? That’s a rare guest. I haven’t seen my uncle for years. Grandpa, I’d forgotten you had an older son,” Yuanyuan’s voice came from the courtyard.
"Open the door," Li Mancang said in a calm tone.
"Yes, sir!" Yuanyuan hopped over and put her shoes on before opening the door.
"Oh my, it really is my uncle! I thought someone was impersonating him!" Yuanyuan opened the door with a big smile. "Auntie, Big Sister, long time no see!"
Li Xingguo felt a little awkward, and the family ignored Yuanyuan and went into the yard.
The courtyard was spacious, with a pavilion and a small kitchen against the wall, containing two wood-burning stoves and two neatly stacked piles of firewood.
Dong Yun thought with disdain, "They live in apartment buildings now, but they still can't shake off their peasant habits and still want to burn firewood. It's a waste to give them such a nice house."
With a beaming smile, he said, "Dad, you're in good health."
Li Mancang asked casually, "What brings you here today?"
"Grandpa, I missed you, so I asked my mom and dad to bring me here to see you," Little Fish called out sweetly as she ran up and hooked her arm around Li Mancang's.
"Anyone who didn't know better would think you went abroad. You missed me so much, it's been two years and you're only just coming back? What's wrong? Is there some custom in your hometown that says you can only come out once every few years? Or do you have to calculate the dates to be able to come out?" Youyou crossed her arms and leaned against the door, giving a forced smile.
“Your sister is busy with schoolwork, and you, a child from an ordinary school, wouldn’t understand. Little Fish has always been thinking about her grandparents,” Dong Yun tried to make amends for her daughter.
"Sister, you don't understand. Foreigners don't celebrate the New Year, but our eldest sister's international school doesn't even have a holiday for the New Year," Yuanyuan said with a grin.
Little Fish rolled her eyes at Youyou. "Grandpa, let's go inside. It's a bit cold outside. Where's Grandma?"
"He's inside, come in." Li Mancang gently pulled his arm away. This kid was the kind of person you only needed when you had him; he wouldn't even bother to put on an act if you didn't need him.
"Grandma, Grandma, I'm here!" Little Fish seemed oblivious to Li Mancang's coldness as she entered the house, calling out happily.
Inside the house, the elderly couple, Wu Zhiqi, and Liu Cuihua were soaking their feet. The third son had bought six foot bath tubs and a lot of herbal foot bath packets for the family today, and the whole family was enjoying them.
"These things are really great now, this tub even has a massage function," Liu Cuihua exclaimed.
"This is such a good society, living is a blessing," the old lady exclaimed. She said that she could never have dreamed of such a good life before.
“Of course, Grandpa and Grandma, you must live well. It’s a great honor to have two centenarians in our family,” Chunni said with a smile.
When Xiaoyuer came in, everyone's smiles froze for a moment, but no one was surprised. When Lao San came back, he told everyone that Li Xingguo had asked him to pay Xiaoyuer's tuition.
Given Li Xingguo's character, how could he possibly not come back?
