Dong Yun kicked the door open with a bang.
Li Xingguo, who was inside the house, was startled. Was there really a robbery in this village? In a panic, he threw the money he had just withdrawn that day out the back window.
"Li Xingguo, come out here!" Dong Yun stood in the courtyard with her hands on her hips.
Li Xingguo calmed down instantly upon hearing the voice; he wasn't afraid of Dong Yun.
"Mom, what are you doing? Dad just recovered from his illness, and you're scaring him!" Xiaoyuer looked unhappy, secretly thinking that she couldn't talk to her mother this time no matter what.
Her mother didn't even have a job. If they hadn't secretly stayed with her second uncle, the two of them would have been so poor that they would have had to beg on the streets.
"Your dad doesn't want you anymore, and you're still siding with that heartless bastard!" Dong Yun's face twitched with anger.
“I am my dad’s daughter. How could my dad not want me? Didn’t my second uncle say that my dad went to a sanatorium to recover from his injuries?” Xiaoyuer’s voice was not quiet, so that Li Xingguo could hear that she was thinking about her father.
“A sanatorium isn’t a prison. He hasn’t cared about you at all in all this time, and he hasn’t even asked what kind of life we’re living.” Dong Yun didn’t expect her daughter to change so much after arriving here. Before, she was cursing Li Xingguo with her every day, including on the way here just now, the mother and daughter were cursing each other back and forth.
“We ended up like that because you didn’t work. I almost starved to death following you. Now that I’ve found my dad, I’ll live with him from now on.” Before, Xiaoyuer could only rely on Dong Yun, but now that she has found Li Xingguo, she instantly has confidence.
Dong Yun couldn't believe it. For the past few months, she and her daughter had relied on each other. The school was far from their home, so she would get up early every day to cook, send Xiaoyuer to school, and then find some odd jobs to do. After Xiaoyuer got out of school, she would accompany her home. Afraid that Xiaoyuer would feel sorry for her suffering, she would say that she was going out shopping or to the park. All her money was spent on Xiaoyuer, and she was happy to do so, feeling that all her efforts were worthwhile.
Now that she has just found Li Xingguo, her daughter has turned against her and wants to live with her heartless father who despises her so much. Her heart is breaking.
"When have I ever let you go hungry?"
"You only give me five yuan a day. What can I eat at school? I'm almost starving to death, so I'll just stay with my dad from now on."
With that little money, she could only buy a boxed lunch at school. Her classmates could have snacks and drinks after their meals, but she could only watch helplessly. She thought back to when her father was alive, she could eat or play whatever she wanted with just a word. Now, that was a luxury. Only by staying with her father could she return to her old life, or even better. Staying with her mother, even sleeping was a problem.
“I give you fifty yuan a week, when did I start giving you five yuan a day? I cook your favorite dishes for you morning and night. I eat some pickled vegetables, cabbage and radishes myself. I cook meat dishes for you every day. You eat so much greasy food, and now you're saying this to me?”
Dong Yun wouldn't have been this angry before, but now that she's divorced from Li Xingguo, her daughter saying this in front of Li Xingguo is practically accusing her of mistreating the child and slapping her in the face.
Li Xingguo crossed his arms and watched the mother and daughter argue.
When Xiaoyuer saw Li Xingguo, she immediately ran up to him and said, "Dad, I missed you so much! Are you all better? I worry about you every day."
Dong Yun wiped her eyes. "Li Xingguo, you promised to pay off my credit card when we divorced. How could you go back on your word?"
"I'm sick right now and can't even take care of myself, so you'd better figure something out yourself," Li Xingguo said calmly, suddenly realizing that the illness his second brother had given him wasn't entirely without its benefits.
"That's all money you lost in the stock market, why should I pay it back?" Dong Yun was furious; Li Xingguo was being a scoundrel.
