Chapter 3 I'll Give You a Slap
Li Qiaodi's first reaction was to point her finger at Zhou Lijuan and roar angrily, blaming her for causing so much trouble and making Zhou Shufen sick and miserable.
She then turned her gaze to her mother-in-law, Zhou Shufen, who was still sitting in the chair, and repeatedly asked, "Mom, Mom, how are you?"
Unexpectedly, her mother-in-law slapped her as soon as she woke up.
There was a crisp "snap" sound.
Her head suddenly started buzzing.
I felt dizzy and my vision went black; I almost lost my footing.
Although she felt dizzy, her hearing was exceptionally sharp.
A snicker came from Zhou Lijuan's side.
At first, he kept his voice down, as if he was deliberately trying not to let anyone hear him.
The joke was halfway through when he suddenly started shouting.
Li Qiaodi's temper flared up instantly, and her cheeks flushed bright red.
After a few words of argument, her tone became less polite, and she blurted out a few sarcastic remarks in response to Zhou Lijuan's sarcasm.
But before she could finish speaking, tears welled up in her eyes.
She looked up at her mother-in-law, her voice trembling with tears, and asked, "Mom, why did you hit me! Even if you were really feeling unwell, you could have said so and asked my third brother to take you to the hospital for a check-up."
Speaking of the third brother, Zhou Hailiang, he is widely recognized as the laziest child in the family.
Even if the other party is his biological mother in name only.
He never wanted to do such dirty and tiring work.
"Sister-in-law, aren't you quite capable? You're the eldest daughter-in-law of the eldest branch of the family, and you're usually the most filial, so of course this kind of thing is your responsibility!"
Zhou Hailiang leaned against the wall, looking completely unconcerned.
“My mom is your mother-in-law, so you should take on this responsibility. Besides, I'm still growing, and I'm getting taller so fast that I can't carry someone that heavy. If I were to carry Mom out... oh my, I'd probably break my bones!”
Li Qiaodi was almost furious when she heard this.
"How dare you say that? You're the tallest in the family, yet you say you can't even carry Mom on your back. If this gets out and the villagers hear you say that, won't they laugh at us, saying the Zhou family has no one left?"
In terms of physique, Zhou Hailiang is indeed the most outstanding among his brothers.
This young man is over 1.8 meters tall, which makes him stand out among ordinary villagers, and he is also quite handsome.
Despite having no legitimate job and spending his days idly with some hooligans, he did nothing all day.
However, quite a few girls still throw themselves at him because of his looks.
In the entire family, only her husband was a relatively ambitious person.
As for the second and third sons, they do nothing but loaf around all day.
The youngest brother, who was fourth in line, completely inherited his father's cowardly personality. He was timid and afraid of trouble, and even when he spoke, he would stutter.
My sister-in-law doesn't work properly all day; all she does is dress herself up. She spends more time on dressing up than eating or sleeping.
She has a strong competitive spirit and always feels that because she is good-looking, she should find a respectable job and marry a rich and handsome husband.
She dreamed of marrying into a wealthy family one day.
My sister-in-law is usually unassuming and doesn't talk much. She never competes with anyone and just keeps her head down and works hard.
In this large family, she was the least outstanding and the least noticeable person.
Normally, unless there is something particularly important, Li Qiaodi will not visit her mother-in-law's house for about a month.
She didn't want to have anything to do with that family from the bottom of her heart.
I'm always afraid of losing face because of their actions, and even more afraid of being implicated.
But today I finally humbled myself and made this trip.
I originally wanted to deal with the work arrangements first.
Who knew that I would be slapped for no reason!
"Alright, all of you, stop talking to me! Your chatter is so noisy and annoying!"
Zhou Shufen waved her hand, her face full of impatience.
At this moment, Zhou Shufen was immersed in the joy of "rebirth".
When she opened her eyes and saw her familiar children, she was still a little excited.
But she quickly recalled the humiliations of her past life, and her mood plummeted as if she had fallen into an ice cellar.
"Mom, now that you're feeling better, shouldn't we talk about that job? How exactly was this decided? This matter needs to be finalized soon, and Haiwei's trip abroad can't be delayed."
Zhou Lijuan crossed her arms and glanced at Li Qiaodi with an impatient look.
"Yes, Mom, please tell us already. Stop dawdling here. We all have our own things to do, so let's not waste each other's time! We need to decide who gets this job as soon as possible. We can't just keep dragging this on like this."
"Mom, I have something to say too!"
Zhou Hailiang also spoke up, not to be outdone.
"I think this job is better suited for Xiaowei! For the sake of my future family life, shouldn't you make more arrangements for me?"
At this moment, Zhou Hailiang blinked.
He nimbly turned around and circled behind Zhou Shufen.
With a kind and gentle smile, he began to massage her shoulders.
Zhou Shufen has always been most susceptible to this kind of lively and flattering behavior.
The eldest son has always been honest and unassuming, not talkative and not good at pleasing others.
Zhou Hailiang is eloquent and particularly good at coaxing people, often making his mother beam with joy.
This time, he was unusually proactive and hardworking, ostensibly to secure a job for his family.
His real purpose was to pursue Zhou Xiaowei, a girl from the next village.
Zhou Xiaowei is a recognized beauty in the village.
She is not only beautiful, but also gentle and comes from a good family.
Many young men in the village had a crush on her, but Zhou Hailiang was the only one who dared to take the initiative to pursue her.
But Zhou Xiaowei's family looked down on him at all, thinking that Zhou Hailiang was lazy and irresponsible.
Therefore, she rejected his advances in every way.
Strangely, the more forcefully Zhou Hailiang was rejected, the more motivated he became.
In fact, it's obvious to everyone that Zhou Xiaowei's family doesn't completely dislike him; they're just deliberately putting on airs to make him suffer a bit and whet his appetite.
Unfortunately, Zhou Hailiang just couldn't see this point.
Or perhaps even if he understood, he was unwilling to give up and continued to shamelessly push forward time and time again.
At this moment, thinking about all this, Zhou Shufen's face gradually darkened.
A strange sense of dissatisfaction rose in his heart.
Looking at her son, who was still diligently massaging her back, Zhou Shufen frowned and coldly uttered a sentence.
"Alright, if you can win Zhou Xiaowei over, then I'll be impressed. But if you can't, then don't go crying and complaining. If you end up a bachelor for life, you can only blame yourself for your own mistakes!"
"mom!!"
"I can't live without her! If you dare to stop me, I'll... I'll die!"
He grabbed his mother's sleeve and raised his voice.
Those eyes were fixed on Zhou Shufen.
