Chapter 119 Rescue

Chapter 119 Rescue

He dialed Zhou Haiqing's number with trembling hands.

"Brother...Mom's had an accident...she fell down the stairs and is in the hospital being treated...come quickly!"

When Zhou Haiqing received the call, she was packing her bags and preparing to leave.

Upon hearing this, his face turned deathly pale, and without saying a word, he grabbed his coat and rushed outside.

Just as he reached the door, he suddenly remembered that Guo Zhenyi also needed to know about this.

He immediately took out his phone and dialed Guo Zhenyi's number.

The moment the call connected, Guo Zhenyi was sitting on the sofa drinking tea.

"Hello? What's wrong?"

"Uncle Guo, this is Haiqing. I just received news that Mom fell down the stairs and is currently in the hospital receiving emergency treatment. Please come over immediately!"

Zhou Haiqing's voice was choked with sobs.

"What?!"

Guo Zhenyi suddenly stood up from the sofa.

"How could she have fallen? She was perfectly fine! What happened?!"

"I can't explain it in detail. I'm going to the hospital right away. We can talk about it in detail when we meet."

Zhou Haiqing's voice trembled slightly.

"Okay, I'm off right now!"

Guo Zhenyi stood there stunned for a few seconds.

His heart skipped a beat, and his thoughts became a jumbled mess.

He pinched his thigh hard, the pain jolting him back to his senses.

The footsteps were hurried and disordered, echoing in the empty hallway.

He didn't even realize that his back was covered in cold sweat.

The two arrived at the hospital almost at the same time, rushed to the operating room, and saw Zhou Hairong sitting there.

He was hunched over, his eyes red and swollen, clearly having cried.

"How did it go? Is he alright?"

Guo Zhenyi's voice was trembling.

He staggered, his eyes fixed on Zhou Hairong, waiting for an answer.

"Uncle Guo...the doctor is trying to save him, but we don't know the outcome yet."

Zhou Hairong's eyes were red, and his face was full of self-blame.

He dared not look Guo Zhenyi in the eye, feeling only guilt.

If he had been more decisive and braver, perhaps the tragedy would not have happened.

"Okay, now we can only trust the doctor."

Guo Zhenyi forced himself to calm down.

He took several deep breaths, trying to calm his violently heaving chest.

"Tell me first, what exactly happened?"

Zhou Hairong composed himself and told the whole story.

He did not defend himself or shirk responsibility; he simply recounted the entire incident verbatim.

Guo Zhenyi's eyes immediately reddened after hearing this.

He never imagined that Zhou Lijuan could be so heartless as to do such a thing to her own mother.

That's her biological mother, the one who raised her with such hardship. How could she... how could she do such a thing?

"Uncle Guo, I also bear some responsibility for this."

Zhou Hairong's voice was full of remorse.

"If I had acted faster and reacted more decisively, Mom wouldn't have fallen. I shouldn't have hesitated, I shouldn't have backed down... I'm useless."

"It's not your fault."

Guo Zhenyi shook his head.

He reached out and patted Zhou Hairong on the shoulder.

"Whoever is responsible for this should take responsibility. You have already done your best."

He stared at the closed door of the operating room, his gaze gradually becoming sharp and cold.

Zhou Lijuan reacted quickly.

But she was too naive, almost ridiculously so.

How can something like this be so easily forgotten?

Cause and effect are karmic; you may escape it for a while, but you can't escape it forever.

"Okay, thank you, Uncle Guo."

Zhou Hairong finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"You stay here and take good care of your mother. I'm going out to take care of something."

He stood ramrod straight, his gaze as calm and deep as a still pool, as if he had everything under control.

"I understand, you go ahead, I'll take care of things here."

Zhou Hairong nodded heavily.

He knew that all he could do at that moment was stay by his mother's side.

He cannot fall down, nor dare he fall down.

Guo Zhenyi took one last look at the tightly closed operating room door.

His brows furrowed slightly, and a hint of anger and regret flashed in his eyes.

He turned around decisively and strode away.

He got into the car and started the engine.

The navigation was already set, to the old rented room where Zhou Lijuan lived.

By this time, Zhou Lijuan had already returned home.

She locked the door behind her, feeling as if all her strength had been drained away.

Her heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was going to burst out of her chest, and her fingers were trembling slightly.

She raised her hand, trying to calm herself down, but even holding the water glass seemed clumsy.

Her eyes darted around, and she kept muttering to herself.

"What utterly unlucky! I didn't even push her. She just missed a step and fell. Who can she blame? Isn't it obvious that she's just unlucky? Isn't she just deliberately causing me trouble!"

Now that things have come to this, she's completely shirking all responsibility.

She didn't even realize that the woman lying on the operating table was her own mother.

In her eyes, there was only her own safety, whether she would be caught or held accountable.

"Oh no... could something terrible have happened?"

The more she thought about it, the more frightened she became.

"If something really happens to him, won't I be in trouble too? If the police trace it back to me... how am I supposed to live?"

She never even considered Zhou Shufen's current situation.

Her heart was already filled with selfishness and indifference.

Guo Zhenyi had already arrived outside the door.

He took a deep breath and slammed the door shut.

"Bang……"

With a loud bang, the door lock shattered.

Guo Zhenyi stepped in, his gaze fixed on Zhou Lijuan, who was curled up in a chair.

"What are you doing! This is my house! Get out of here!"

Zhou Lijuan jumped up in fright.

"You want me to leave? Not so easy."

Guo Zhenyi sneered.

"You pushed your mother down the stairs, and the security camera at the stairwell clearly shows it. You still want to pretend nothing happened? Pretend you're innocent? Today I'm taking you to the police station so the police can interrogate you properly!"

He stepped forward and grabbed Zhou Lijuan's arm.

Zhou Lijuan panicked and screamed.

"No! Let me go! What right do you have to arrest me! I'm not going to the police station! It was an accident! It really was an accident!"

She struggled desperately, waving her hands wildly, trying to break free from those iron-like grips.

But Guo Zhenyi remained unmoved, his eyes as cold as ice.

"Your opinion doesn't count!"

He dragged her towards the door, pulling her all the way downstairs and pressing her against the car.

Just as the car door was about to close, Zhou Lijuan finally couldn't hold on any longer.

She suddenly knelt down, pleading tremblingly.

"I was wrong! I know I was wrong! Please forgive me this time! I'm still young, I can't go to jail! I don't want to go to jail! Please... please..."

She clung tightly to the car door.

"Please! Don't send me there! I really regret it! I was wrong! I really know I was wrong! I'm willing to take care of Mom! I'll stay by her side every day! I'll never leave her side!"

Suddenly, a brilliant idea struck her, like a drowning person grasping at a straw.

She desperately hoped he would be even slightly moved.

She was willing to do anything as long as he nodded.

"impossible."

Guo Zhenyi remained expressionless.

He swiftly and decisively pried her fingers off the car door, which were gripping it tightly.

With a bang, the car door slammed shut.

It cut off her cries, her struggles, and even her last shred of hope.

She was trapped in the back seat, pounding on the car window.
