On the steel bridge connecting Heilongjiang and the Soviet Union, a Dongfeng truck with a "Black A" license plate drove out of the Heihe border inspection station and slowly headed towards the Soviet border checkpoint.
It happened to be two o'clock in the afternoon, the peak time for traffic on the Jiang Bridge. Likewise, border inspections on both sides of the Sino-Soviet border were at their most stringent. From the bridge, one could see the Soviet border checkpoint, where dozens of soldiers in uniform, AK-slung, busily inspected every passing truck. The sight of the military dogs, darting about amidst the crowds, was particularly unsettling.
In the observation tower of the border checkpoint, Captain Paul carefully observed every truck coming from the bridge through the telescope in his hand, so he soon discovered the ordinary-looking two-section truck with one trailer.
"Finally," Paul put down his binoculars and breathed a sigh of relief. As a border captain, he usually didn't come to the checkpoint for duty. He would usually stay in the back, drinking vodka, lighting a cigarette, reading the newspaper, and waiting for the end of his shift. But today was obviously a special case.
After straightening the collar of his military uniform, Paul didn't dare to delay any longer. He took his military cap from the hat rack and ran downstairs quickly.
"Open the No. 4 backup gate!" Paul ran downstairs, knocked on the window of the machine room, shouted casually, and then took two soldiers and walked quickly towards the checkpoint.
A few minutes later, under the guidance of Paul, the Dongfeng truck bypassed the checkpoint and drove directly into the alternative channel, and finally stopped in front of a special military parking lot inside the checkpoint.
The car door opened, and Zhao Xiaohai, dressed in casual clothes, jumped out first, followed closely by Sofia, who had just changed into a military jacket. After nearly a month, returning to the Soviet Union, both Zhao Xiaohai and Sofia had a completely new experience.
"Comrade Major!" Paul ran over after the truck, first saluted Sophia, and then said to Zhao Xiaohai, "Mr. Zhao, you're finally here. I've been waiting here since I received the notice from my superiors this morning. I didn't expect you to come until this time."
"Haha, I'm so sorry, I was delayed on the way. Um, Comrade Belikov..." Zhao Xiaohai said with a kind smile, extending his hand first.
"Mr. Zhao, you can just call me Paul according to your Chinese custom. It's more intimate." Paul smiled and hurriedly stretched out his hand to shake hands with Zhao Xiaohai, saying at the same time.
Honestly, Paul had no idea what the Chinese man before him was connected to his superiors; his rank wasn't high enough. But he knew one thing: this man was undoubtedly no ordinary person. Consider what had happened today. First, KGB Major General Zyuganov personally called the border guard regiment, requesting that they escort this Chinese man surnamed Zhao through the border. Then, the foreign trade monitors who had been patrolling the checkpoints all day had simply withdrawn without a trace and hadn't returned yet. What did all this indicate? Clearly, it only meant that this Chinese man surnamed Zhao was a man with extraordinary connections.
"Ah, Comrade Paul, you've worked so hard," Zhao Xiaohai released his hand and continued, "According to the original plan, we should have passed the customs this morning. But we had to buy some gifts for some friends, so we were delayed, um..."
Zhao Xiaohai said, turning his head to look at the busy checkpoint not far away, and then said, "I see you guys are quite busy here too. How about this, let's start the inspection now, so we can continue on our way after that. I think Comrade Zyuganov must be getting impatient waiting there."
"Mr. Zhao, you're so polite. This is what we should do," Paul said with a smile on his face, but he secretly glanced at Sophia cautiously. The other person's cold expression made him unable to detect anything strange. Helplessly, he could only pretend to think for a moment and said, "As for the inspection, haha, I think we should forget it. Mr. Zhao is obviously a decent businessman. There will definitely be no prohibited items in your goods."
"This...this is not appropriate, right?" Zhao Xiaohai rubbed his palms and said with some trepidation.
In fact, I was very happy.
What is power? This is power.
What is the privilege in power? This is the privilege.
Whether in ancient or modern times, in China or abroad, it is easier to get things done if you have privileges.
in the country, Zhao Xiaohai has no chance to enjoy any privileges.
Only by chance could one enjoy it in the Soviet Union.
"Haha, there's nothing inappropriate about that," Paul said, waving to the two people following him. "Mr. Zhao, all you have to do is sign your name in the transit registration book. Haha, this formality still needs to be followed, otherwise I won't be able to explain it to my superiors."
"Of course, of course. Cooperating with your customs inspection is also the obligation of every businessman." Zhao Xiaohai smiled happily. He knew that from now on, the customs on the Sino-Soviet border, at least on the Soviet side, would be useless to him and his company.
From now on, you can buy whatever you want and sell whatever you want.
As long as the domestic supply channels are stable, what is there to worry about that cannot be traded?
Mou Qizhong became China's first generation richest man by working as a trader in the Soviet Union.
Isn’t it just exchanging canned food for an airplane?
I can do it too.
Canned channels? Of course that's not a problem.
Airplanes? Don't the Soviets already have them?
"Oh, that's right," Zhao Xiaohai signed his name on the register from one of Paul's followers and said to Sophia without looking up, "Sophia, go and bring down the two boxes of cigarettes we brought with us. We didn't bring anything good this time, so consider these as a gift to Comrade Paul and the brothers in prison to cheer them up."
