Chapter 22 Old Furniture

The imitation ancient bed and the bed with a mosquito net frame were moved out in this way. Two of each of the large standing cabinet, chest of drawers, desk and chair were selected and placed in the east and west rooms.

There was also a small dining table, and I found a few small stools of different sizes, which were broken and needed to be repaired. I selected a lot of useless broken wood as firewood.

Zhou Xiang called the woman over and stuffed another fifty cents into her pocket. "Sister, there are too many choices. Just charge the normal price. I won't make things difficult for you. This pile is for firewood, so you can charge it separately."

Seeing that Zhou Xiang was so sensible, the woman gave her the lowest price, only fifty cents for a pile of firewood.

The old furniture cost a total of thirty-seven yuan. Zhou wanted to go out and call a cart, but it took two carts to load so many things, and they were stacked together, so the old furniture was not afraid of being bumped into.

It was already eleven o'clock when they returned to the bungalow of the Water Conservancy Bureau. The cart driver unloaded the goods and prepared to leave. Zhou wanted to stop two people, pay them more, and let them carry the things into the house separately.

Zuo Heng wanted to live in the west room, but Zhou disagreed and asked him to live in the east room.

The master put in all the furniture that suited him and carried the things into the house and left them there.

Zuo Heng and Zhou Xiang slowly moved the furniture into place.

The one chosen for the left horizontal position is the bed with a mosquito net frame, which is placed against the east wall. A large standing cabinet is placed at the end of the bed, and the chest of drawers and desk are placed side by side under the window on the south wall.

Fetch some water, wipe all the furniture, lay out the mats, mattresses, sheets, and quilts.

The clothes were put in the closet, the elementary school textbooks were placed in the chest of drawers, and the ones I brought back were placed on the desk.

Looking at the tidy room, Zuo Heng suddenly burst into tears.

Zhou wanted to watch him cry, so he just let him cry. He would feel comfortable and relaxed after crying.

Zuo Heng, who had cried enough, said to Zhou Xiang: "Thank you, Zhou Xiang, you have given me a family and allowed me to live like a human being."

Zhou Xiang patted his shoulder and said, "We will have buns, and everything else."

Zuo Heng was amused by her pretentious tone, "It will happen. I believe that day will come."

Zhou Xiang: Of course there is, you have a golden brain!

The two of them sorted out the furniture in the west room again. Because the bed was too big, they couldn't push it even if they tried their best. So they simply took it apart, moved it over piece by piece, and then put it back together again.

The two began to look for dismantling parts, starting with the frame, then the bed board, then the bed frame and legs.

After everything was dismantled, they put it in the corresponding position and prepared to install it. The two of them lifted a pair of bed legs and placed them against the wall. When they lifted the other pair, Zhou Xiang felt something was wrong, as if the weight was not right.

"Wait, go and close and lock the gate."

When Zuo Heng came back through the door, he saw Zhou Xiang putting the bed legs on the ground and touching them all over with his hands, carefully touching every single one.

Finally, I stopped at the thickest part in the middle of the bed leg, knocked it with my hand, and then knocked on the side. The sound was obviously different.

Zhou Xiang almost lay on the bed leg before he saw a small dent. He took out a hairpin from his hair and pressed hard into the dent. A wooden piece popped out. He removed the wooden piece and found that the entire bed leg was hollowed out. There were dozens of tiny yellow croakers neatly arranged inside.

Zhou Xiang looked at Zuo Heng and said, "There will be buns."

Zuo Heng also laughed. Yes! She did good things, but earned more.

"Take it out quickly and put it away."

Zhou Xiang nodded and slowly took out all the small yellow croakers, fifty of them in total.

The two looked at each other, and then searched together on the other leg of the bed. Sure enough, there were more, also fifty small yellow croakers.

The two of them ran to the bed legs against the wall, laid them down, and started searching on each side. There really was something there.

This time, underneath the bouncing wood chips were small packages wrapped in cloth.

The two of them took out all the small packages and opened them one by one. There were three pairs of jade bracelets, two jade pendants, three jade hairpins, two pearl necklaces, two jade rings, and two peace lockets.

On the left side are two long and thin packages, which, when opened, reveal a jade ruyi.

The two were silent for a moment, and Zuo Heng said, "Zhou Xiang, pack everything up and take it back."

"We discovered it together, so we should split it into two parts."

"Nonsense, you bought these things and chose them, which means they are destined to be yours."

No matter how Zhou wanted to persuade him, Zuo Heng refused, "You earned it by doing good deeds. You helped me, and this is God's reward for you."

Zhou had no choice but to find a basin, pack the things one by one, put them in the basin, and put the small yellow croaker at the bottom of the basin.

The bed legs were plugged with wood, and then the wood pieces were put back in place, making them fit perfectly. And they were all flush against the bed, making them harder to detect.

The two of them installed the bed, put in place the large standing cabinet, and placed the chest of drawers, desk, and chair in their respective places.

The small dining table in the kitchen was also set up, and Zuo Heng repaired the broken bench with some old wood so that it no longer shook.

The job was done and they wanted to go out to eat, but they were worried about the bowl, so Zuo Heng stayed behind to put things away while Zhou wanted to go out to buy food.

Zhou Xiang took a bowl, bought food, and also bought rice, flour and oil.

Zuo Heng looked at the cart full of things and felt helpless and touched, as it was all for himself.

The two of them carried the rice and flour into the kitchen and placed the oil drum on the table. "That's all. Buy whatever you need."

After saying that, he gave Zuo Heng ten large bills and said, "Take this money and spend it first. Don't be reluctant to spend it. You have seen those things. They can support you."

Zuo Heng took the money with red eyes. He thought that this person, who he had only known for one day, was so nice to him. He was younger than him and hadn't discovered those things yet. But he said that he had to support himself and that he must work hard.

Zhou Xiang joked, "If you feel like there's no place to hide, you can hide in the bed legs."

Zuo Heng nodded seriously. "Good idea. I really don't think it's safe to keep so much money anywhere. Well, I can use these four bed legs as a treasure trove from now on."

Zhou wanted to see him squat down and open the wood chip, so he let him do it. He had been wandering alone for two years and it was true that he felt insecure.

"Hurry up, the food is getting cold. I'll be back home after dinner. I've given you my home address. If you need anything urgent, come find me."

Upon hearing this, Zuo Heng's men quickly hid nine of the cards and kept one as a backup.

"Eat, eat."

The two began to eat. Zhou thought for a moment and said, "You can get a dog to keep you company. Although this unit is safe, you're alone and the space is still a bit large."

Zuo Heng nodded, "Okay, I'll buy the puppy when I see it."

After dinner, Zhou Xiang put the basin into a snakeskin bag and left. Zuo Heng reluctantly saw her out.

"You need to review more, and we have to find a way to get you into school! Also, when you have time, go open the windows over there to let some air in. Don't tell the truth no matter what people ask. Just say you rent a house to go to school and the rent is cheaper here."
