Chapter 6 Buying a Basket

Although I had poor grades in junior high school in my previous life, when I first came into contact with E language, I was still very interested in the pronunciation of each letter and the spelling of words. I felt that it was very similar to elementary school pinyin. As long as I remembered how to pronounce those letters, I could still spell out the words by looking at them.

Time always passes quickly when one is studying hard. Zhou Xiang felt like he had just fallen asleep when he heard a sound outside the space. It was his mother getting up to cook.

Zhou Xiang quickly put on her cotton coat and trousers and left the space. The temperature difference made her shiver uncontrollably. Seeing this, Zhou's mother asked, "Are you cold? You should stay in the main room by the door and cover half of it with a curtain."

"Let's talk about it later. Wait until my second sister comes back next year and see what she decides."

Zhou's mother stopped trying to persuade her. Her little girl was an adult now and had her own considerations.

After quickly finishing his breakfast, Zhou Xiang went to the market. The only main street in the town runs north-south, connecting to the provincial road at the southernmost end. From south to north, there are private houses, and many people sell breakfast, knife-cut noodles, wontons, fried dough sticks, soy milk and tofu pudding.

To the north are public institutions. There is a row of stores in front of the food station, selling pork and braised meat. Since private individuals are allowed to slaughter pigs, the business of the food station’s stores is not very good.

Zhou's father got up early to help boil water and slaughter pigs. He was in logistics, so selling pork had nothing to do with him. After he finished his work in the morning, he had nothing to do all day.

Continuing north is Zhou's mother's workplace. The supply and marketing cooperative's store occupies almost half of this main street. At that time, the supply and marketing cooperative's business was still good, and many daily necessities were only sold in the supply and marketing cooperative.

Moreover, if an individual wants to do this business, it is difficult to do it without capital and supply channels. The capital is too large and the return on investment is a bit slow. Many people are afraid of losing money. It is not like slaughtering pigs, where three or four people work together and each sells a part, and the money is returned in half a day. If they can't sell all, they can eat it at home.

Zhou Xiang walked out of the gate of the food station's staff quarters and headed north. After passing the supply and marketing cooperative, to the north was the fish market and the place where rural people set up stalls, selling all kinds of things.

Zhou searched for a long time before he found someone selling wicker baskets in a corner. Since it wasn't something that needed to be bought all day, there were very few people selling it. Sometimes, no one came to sell for several consecutive markets.

"Uncle, how much is this big basket?"

The old man selling the baskets was about sixty years old. Although he felt that it was inappropriate for the little girl to call him "uncle", he didn't say anything else. They were not real relatives and there was no need to pay attention to the seniority. "Forty cents each."

Zhou Xiang thought it was a bit expensive. His mother only earned 90 cents a day, and this amount was enough to weave two baskets.

"It's too expensive. Can you make it cheaper? I want all the dozen or so baskets you have here, big and small."

The old man wanted them all when he heard it. He didn't need to stand in the cold wind anymore, so he sold them at a low price. "A big basket is 30 cents, a small basket is 20 cents. I've already reduced the price by 10 cents on each basket. Little girl, stop bargaining. If it weren't so cold, I wouldn't reduce the price. I can only make one basket a day."

Zhou Xiang nodded. Six large baskets and six small baskets, exactly three dollars. "Carry them to the food station yard for me, and I'll pay you."

The old man was very decisive. He stood up, stacked up all the baskets and tied them up, picked up the shoulder pole and carried them, and followed Zhou Xiang all the way to the yard of the food station. Zhou Xiang pointed to a remote corner and asked him to put down the baskets, and gave him three yuan. The old man untied the rope, took the money and the shoulder pole and left.

Seeing no one around, Zhou Xiang quickly put all the baskets into his space and wanted to continue shopping, but he was out of money. What should he do? He also had to find a way to pay for the trip to the county town.

Zhou Xiang kicked the stones on the roadside, thinking how frustrating it was to have no money, and kicked the stones away with force.

“Ouch!”

Zhou Xiang was startled and didn't dare to look up, fearing that he would hit anyone. He had no money left, so how could he take anyone to see a doctor?

She wanted to run away from the scene, but her conscience held her back. What if her escape caused bigger problems for others?

"Zhou Xiangxiang!"

Zhou Xiang wanted to avoid this name as much as possible. There was only one person in the world who would call him that, and that was the son of the director of the Zhenbei Post Office, a devilish figure.

Every time he saw him, Zhou Xiang felt like a mouse seeing a cat, and he wanted to run away.

The same thing happened now. Zhou wanted to run, but he couldn't outrun him who was almost 1.7 meters tall. He was stopped by him in a few steps and trapped in the corner.

Ling Ran looked at the skinny little girl in front of him. It was so nice to be back to his youth. It was so nice to see the little girl who had always been buried in his heart.

The little girl hasn't grown up yet, she's dark and thin, and looks like a seven or eight-year-old child.

I remember when I met her, her family had just moved to the town. She was only five years old at that time, chubby and very cute. Everyone still held a stack of bowls and went to the cafeteria to eat. Several units ate together in the post office cafeteria.

In winter, she always had a runny nose, and when it was about to flow into her mouth, she sucked it back hard, which was so disgusting.

Her own father even joked that it was vermicelli, which was even more disgusting. So even though I really like her white and chubby face, I can't help but bully her every time I see her.

Over time, she started to hide when she saw him, but he didn't know that he had liked her at first sight. The five years of bullying was just the boy trying to attract the girl's attention.

Later, after I went to the county town to attend middle school, I didn't like to come back. I went to high school and joined the team. Until I came back to visit my relatives, my mother urged me to go on a blind date. Suddenly, the little girl with a chubby face, big black eyes, and a snotty nose appeared in my mind.

Thinking back to when I rejected all the girls' confessions during school, I realized that I had always liked her and had been waiting for her to grow up.

But when I went to look for her, she was no longer in my sight. When I finally got any news about her, she had already gotten married.

When I heard the news, I realized how stupid I was. I actually lost my treasure and still thought it was still there.

I can only numb myself with work, because only then I realize that I not only like it, but I love it.

In my previous life, I was so stupid that I didn't dare to pay attention to her life, for fear that I would disturb her. I focused all my energy on work. What was the point of trying so hard to climb to a high position?

I didn't even know that she had divorced, gone to Kyoto and remarried. It was not until one day when I came to Kyoto for a meeting and drove through a bridge that I saw her staggering. Only then did I realize how hard her life was. She looked like that before she was even fifty.

But he didn't dare to appear in front of her. He knew how strong-willed she was. She had been strong since she was a child. Every time he bullied her, she would not give up resisting even if she was afraid.
