Chapter 47 Buying Coal

"What are you pulling?" asked the master.

Zhou Xiang pointed at the basket and the dog, then at himself.

The master laughed and said, "Okay, come on up!" Then he moved the broken basket onto the cart. Zhou Xiang climbed onto the cart by himself, and the big dog jumped onto the cart directly.

After giving the address, Zhou Xiang held onto the broken basket, looked at the shivering puppies, and said to the big dog, "Go in and take them with you. They're cold."

The big dog obediently got into the basket, turned around a few times, and then struggled to curl up and lie down in the small broken basket. The puppies smelled the scent and crawled under the big dog's belly to find their food.

"This big dog is so obedient." The master praised. Because the dog was light, the master turned around and pushed the cart.

"Yeah, he's a good dog."

The big dog looked up at Zhou Xiang, then lowered his head again.

When they arrived at the gate of the Water Conservancy Bureau, Zhou wanted to jump off the cart, and the big dog followed him, whining at the broken basket on the cart.

The cart driver took down the basket, Zhou Xiang paid the fare, and after the cart driver left, he took out the key from the space and opened the gate.

Zuo Heng didn't know if he had gone out to buy groceries, as the yard gate was locked.

He entered the kitchen, put down the cloth bag in his hand, and moved the basket outside the yard into the kitchen.

In the corner next to the stove, he used branches as a base, then formed a nest, covered it with leaves, and brought out the puppy along with the straw. He then said to the big dog next to him, "This will be your home from now on. Come in and take your pup!"

The big dog jumped into the new den and squatted, staring at Zhou Xiang with wet eyes.

Zhou Xiang went into the inner room and took out a coarse porcelain bowl. He took out two eggs from the space and placed them next to the nest. "Here, eat!"

The big dog immediately stood up and licked the eggs. The eggs were swirling in the bowl. The big dog looked up at Zhou Xiang anxiously and barked softly.

Zhou Xiang looked at the egg covered in the big dog's saliva, pulled out a broken table leg from the firewood pile, and cracked the egg with two knocks.

The big dog finally got to eat the delicious food. After licking it in a few bites, he looked at Zhou Xiang. Zhou Xiang then beat two eggs into the food. After a few bites, he finished it and looked at Zhou Xiang again.

After eating eight eggs, the big dog still looked at Zhou Xiang. Zhou Xiang shook his head, "There are no more. You ate them all. No wonder your master sold you! You eat too much. Wait until lunch."

When the big dog saw that he couldn’t get the cubs, he went back to his den to take them away.

Zuo Heng came back from buying groceries and saw that the courtyard gate was open. He happily called out to the inside: "Zhou Xiang, Zhou Xiang, is that you?"

Before Zhou Xiang could answer, the big dog rushed out and barked.

"Big Dog, come back. This is Zuo Heng, your master. You must remember this."

The big dog sniffed twice, wagged its tail twice, and turned to go into its den in the kitchen.

"Where did such a big dog come from?" Zuo Heng asked, staring at the big dog returning to the kitchen.

"I bought it, including the puppy."

The two went to the kitchen and saw the puppy under the big dog's belly. Zuo Heng was very happy.

"From now on, I'll have so many dogs to keep me company."

Zhou Xiang patted his shoulder and said, "Well, you have company."

Zuo Heng nodded and said, "I will take good care of them."

The two began to cook. Zuo Heng only scooped a bowl of rice, and Zhou Xiang scooped another half bowl of rice.

"I think the big dog can eat it, so you can put more rice in."

Zuo Heng didn't stop it. The big dog still wanted to feed the small dog and eat more.

Zuo Heng's eyes widened when he saw the tomatoes and rapeseed that Zhou Xiang took out of the cloth bag.

"You have this in the middle of winter?"

Zhou Xiang nodded and said, "I saw it in the city and bought some back."

Then take out the meat and tofu.

"I'll stew the braised pork, and you light the fire. After dinner, we'll go buy coal and a stove."

"Did you get the coal ticket?"

"Yeah, Brother Zhou got some for me. There's quite a bit! Feel free to use it."

Add water to the pot, bring to a boil, add the chopped meat, blanch it in water, then remove it and drain the water.

Brush the pot, dry it, pour in oil, add sugar, stir-fry until it melts, pour in the blanched meat pieces, stir-fry a few times, and the meat pieces are coated with sugar color, add soy sauce, stir-fry, add water to cover the meat, add star anise, green onion, ginger, garlic, cover the lid, bring to a boil over high heat, and simmer over low heat.

Chop the tomatoes into pieces, beat two eggs, and make tomato and egg soup later.

An hour later, the food was ready and they started eating. Zuo Heng wanted to feed the dog first, but Zhou Xiang stopped him, "Feed it after you finish eating. You are the master and the boss, you must go first. You can't let it develop bad habits."

Zuo Heng obediently sat down to eat. After he finished eating, he filled a bowl with rice, put two pieces of meat in it, scooped a spoonful of tomato and egg soup, mixed it, and poured it into the large porcelain bowl next to the doghouse.

"Doggy, eat!"

The big dog looked at Zhou Xiang, who nodded and said, "Eat it. You will live here with him from now on. I can't take you home, otherwise you will become a dish."

The big dog shrank back, whimpered a few times in grievance, and lowered his head to eat.

Seeing this, Zuo Heng asked in surprise, "Can it understand?"

Zhou Xiang nodded and told Zuo Heng about the interaction he saw it have with the middle-aged woman before he bought it.

Zuo Heng was very happy to hear this, as he knew he could chat with it in the future.

"I'm going to give it a name, um, Dahuang. Look, it's covered with yellow hair."

Zhou Xiang's mouth twitched, "As long as you like it." This is the kind of name dogs get these days.

The two of them cleaned up the dishes, locked the door and went to buy coal and a stove.

"Should we buy honeycomb coal or coal blocks?" Zhou Xiang asked Zuo Heng.

“Buy big lumps of coal, crush them and mix them with yellow mud, then dry them yourself.”

"It takes so much time to crush big lumps of coal. You should use your time to learn. We buy coal and build the company to crush the coal."

"You don't sell that broken coal, do you?"

"Don't worry, I'll go find someone."

The two of them arrived at the coal construction company and went straight into the coal-beating workshop. There, more than a dozen coal-beating machines were clanging and beating honeycomb coal, making a very loud noise.

Zhou Xiang found He Qin, a neighbor of his grandfather's. He Qin was guarding three coal pulverizers. Seeing Zhou Xiang, she shouted at the top of her lungs, "Xiang Xiang, are you here? Are you here to see me?"

Zhou Xiang nodded, waved his hand, asked her to lower her head, and whispered in her ear, "Aunt He, I want to buy your crushed loose coal. I want to buy a thousand kilograms. Is that okay?"

"Okay, okay. Do you have money and tickets?"

Zhou Xiang nodded, "I brought it with me."

"Okay, I'll take you to get the ticket."

"good."

He Qin took off her dirty gloves, asked her colleague next to her to watch for a while, and then took Zhou Xiang out.

Zhou wanted to ask Zuo Heng to go out and find a donkey cart carrying coal.

I went to pay the money with Aunt He and gave He Qin thirty yuan and a coal ticket for one thousand kilograms. He Qin entered the ticket office and came out with a ticket after a while.

"You go to the backyard and install it. I'm going back to check on the machine."

"Thank you, Aunt He! Go ahead and get busy!"

Zhou Xiang took the invoice and found Zuo Heng, who was negotiating the price with a coal-carrying donkey cart driver, who wanted three dollars.

Zuo Heng wanted to bargain, and Zhou wanted to hold him back.

"Master, I'll pay you four dollars for hauling loose coal, but you have to load and unload the truck for us, how about that?"
