Chapter 4 A Soft Knife
Yang Yuemei rubbed her wet hands, wanting to wipe them on her apron, but then felt a little embarrassed and afraid of losing face.
He could only glare furiously at Jiang Jianni, who was pretending to be nonchalant, while awkwardly greeting her, "Look at this, oh dear, this..."
On the way, Jiang Jianni talked a lot about her family. Lu Xiangyang was already prepared. He put his things on the table and said, "Auntie, please don't be offended by my uninvited visit."
Yang Yuemei had no idea what to do and kept saying, "Don't blame me, don't blame me. Oh dear, you came all this way, why did you bring so much stuff?"
Lu Xiangyang brought quite a lot of things.
Two packs of Daqianmen cigarettes, two bottles of Moutai, a whole carcass weighing five or six jin (2.5-3 catties), and five jin (2.5 kg) of eggs.
If he hadn't ridden his bike over, even with his strong arms, Lu Xiangyang wouldn't have been able to handle carrying all that stuff to the Jiang family's house.
Yang Yuemei was even more at a loss: "Ah, Xiangyang, right? Please sit down, please sit down first."
Jiang Jianni watched the show with a smile: "Mom, we're all family now, you don't need to be so polite."
Yang Yuemei glared at her fiercely, then went to greet Lu Xiangyang: "Xiangyang, do you prefer sweet soup or milk?"
Jiang Jianni deliberately tried to sabotage her: "He likes to drink soda!"
The Jiang family doesn't have a refrigerator, so the children usually buy popsicles and eat them fresh, so they naturally don't prepare soft drinks in advance.
Yang Yuemei was dizzy and immediately thought of borrowing a bottle of soda from her neighbor—the neighbors were a young couple who always had soda and candy at home.
Lu Xiangyang's smile was almost gone. He had only been pressed down onto the sofa by Yang Yuemei for less than three seconds when he quickly stood up again: "Water is fine, water is fine, I'll pour it myself."
Just as the three of them were in a mess, the third brother Jiang Haiyang and the fourth brother Jiang Yanni returned together.
Jiang Yanni spotted Lu Xiangyang immediately, her eyes lighting up instantly. She rushed over and exclaimed, "Wow! Mom, second sister, isn't this my brother-in-law? He's so handsome!"
The little girl is young. After watching a few Hong Kong movies with her classmates, she's always talking about how handsome, beautiful, and cool she is.
Yang Yuemei wished she could sew her mouth shut, and quickly scolded, "Yanni! You better behave yourself and stop being so disrespectful."
Jiang Haiyang grabbed Jiang Yanni by the neck and dragged her into the bedroom: "Mom, second sister, brother-in-law, you can continue your conversation."
After dragging Jiang Yanni into the bedroom, he even locked the door from the outside, which angered Jiang Yanni so much that she threw herself onto the bed: "Jiang Haiyang, you just wait."
Jiang Haiyang ignored her, asked Yang Yuemei for five yuan, and ran out.
When he returned carrying a bag of braised pig's head and a bag of cold dishes, he ran into Jiang's father, who had just returned home.
With Jiang's father were Fan Junshan and three other people he didn't recognize.
He greeted them one by one, then looked at the three strangers with a puzzled expression: "Who are you?"
Fan Junshan looked beaming: "Haiyang, this is the guy I introduced to your second sister. His family is very well-off. Look, he brought two bottles of Wuliangye liquor and a case of instant noodles on his first visit to your house."
Jiang Haiyang: "???"
Jiang Haiyang was completely bewildered.
Doesn't his second sister already have a husband? What is his second aunt's husband trying to do?
He was never good with words, and in this situation he didn't know what to say, so he simply kept quiet.
Mr. Jiang looked troubled: "This..."
Fan Junshan laughed and said, "Brother-in-law, they've come all this way, we can't just leave them standing outside like this."
"Shall we go through the door first and then talk about the rest?"
Like his third son, Jiang's father was also bad at talking.
He wanted to tell Fan Junshan that his second daughter had a boyfriend, but seeing his brother-in-law's enthusiastic manner and the fact that he had brought people directly to his door, he felt awkward about saying it in front of him.
I had no choice but to let them stay at my home; it's less embarrassing to talk things out at home.
Fan Junshan was overjoyed to see that Jiang's father was obediently taking them home to Ying.
He thought to himself, "Jiang Jianni is just a little brat. I can handle her."
You don't listen to me, but I don't believe you won't listen to your father either.
So what if you're a college student? So what if you're a teacher? No matter if you're a college student or a teacher, you still have to listen to your dad, hahaha.
The Li family of three, who came with them, also had simple, honest smiles on their faces.
Fan Junshan truly doesn't consider himself an outsider.
Even though this was the Jiang family home, and Jiang's father was present, he took the lead and walked ahead, introducing Jiang Jiani to everyone as he went.
She started by talking about how good-looking she was, how smart and studious she was from a young age, and how she was the first college student in her family, which made her very proud. Then she talked about Jiang Jianni's current job: a middle school teacher, a certified and secure job that she wouldn't lose even in fifty years. She has a stable salary, many holidays, can take care of her family, and will have a pension after retirement.
Finally, he sighed, "My niece is good in every way, except for one thing: she's a bit stubborn and speaks her mind a bit bluntly."
"Kids are all like that, they have bad tempers and don't really understand social etiquette."
"If she says something unpleasant later, don't take it personally, it's not a big deal."
Jiang's father: "..."
Jiang Haiyang: "..."
It's not a major problem, yet you single it out and keep emphasizing it.
Fan Junshan pushed open the door with great pride, only to find that there was a strange man inside.
His dark side immediately surfaced: "Who are you? What are you doing here?"
Jiang Jianni felt disgusted just looking at him and couldn't help but frown: "Why are you here again?"
Seeing the three people they brought with them made them even more disgusted.
Fan Junshan actually brought his neighbor over; his intentions were obvious.
Jiang Jianni suspected that if she hadn't come back at noon, given her parents' soft and unyielding nature, they might have been persuaded by Fan Junshan's sweet talk to arrange her marriage while she was away.
Fan Junshan's face stiffened for a moment, then he quickly smiled again: "Jia Ni, I've come to tell you some very good news..."
Jiang Jianni smiled and said, "Second Uncle, it's just in time that you've come. I also have some great news to tell you."
Seeing her smiling face, Fan Junshan couldn't help but become more vigilant: "What good news? Just tell me, you can just stand there and say it, you don't need to come up to me."
They were afraid that Jiang Jianni might pick up a broom and hit them again if they disagreed.
Jiang Jianni naturally took Lu Xiangyang's arm and introduced him, "Second Uncle, this is Lu Xiangyang, my boyfriend."
"My partner works at the city's fire department, specifically in charge of fire protection."
"Second Uncle, didn't the place next to your clothing store catch fire before?"
"Okay, I'll have Xiangyang take a day off to come to your shop and check it out for you. I'll see if there's anything that's not up to standard and needs to be rectified."
"What if your shop accidentally catches fire one day and burns down the clothes store? Wouldn't you have to lose everything?"
"Second Uncle, don't you think this is a great thing?"
Fan Junshan's face turned green.
The Li couple's expressions also turned grim.
