What woman doesn't love beautiful jewelry? Before, it was simply a matter of affordability. Now, it's impractical; a bite of biscuit is more economical.
The jewelry business wasn't as good as the wooden chair vendor across the street. The old man selling wooden furniture had already sold two chairs while they were passing by.
Although it's not very valuable, it's still better than this kind of completely useless decoration.
The man was overjoyed and quickly invited them to look around freely.
Li Xiao also liked the beautiful jewelry, but she was a little hesitant. Oh well, whatever, I'll just buy it first.
Qiu Fengyu watched the two people squatting in front of the stall looking around with great interest, and stood aside with a slight smile, waiting.
She had these things before, and they weren't particularly precious to her; they were dispensable.
At times like these, nothing is more valuable than a pack of instant noodles.
If they're willing, then so be it. It's rare to see them so happy. If the supplies run out, we can always find more later; it just takes a little more time.
Li Xiao didn't know what Qiu Fengyu was thinking. She had the supplies, otherwise she wouldn't have been willing to exchange her life-saving items for these useless decorations that were neither edible nor drinkable.
Li Xiao picked out a sapphire necklace. The sapphire was beautiful, like a pool of deep blue seawater, both profound and captivating. She also took a liking to a jadeite bangle; it was of icy quality, with wisps of light green floating on top, translucent and refreshing, very beautiful.
Tian Tian selected a string of agate beads, which was bright red and quite nice, as well as a diamond necklace. The diamonds weren't very big, but the design was very unique.
Seeing that the two had made their choices and liked them both, Qiu Fengyu asked about the price and how to change it.
In Li Xiao's view, her original intention was to help people, and she would agree as long as it was not excessive.
The man was overjoyed to see that several items had been selected; finally, there would be something to eat at home, and the child's life would be saved.
He hurriedly answered, "Just 5 jin of rice will do. If..." The man knew it was a bit inappropriate to say so much, so he looked at the people opposite him without saying anything and continued speaking.
"If you think it's too expensive, then I'll give you three catties of rice. I had no other choice but to bring out my wife's treasured food in exchange for it. She used to love these the most."
He spoke softer and softer, his head bowed in shame.
Now, these things are really not worth much, and they can't be exchanged for anything. He was also afraid that he wouldn't get anything back, so he had to lower the price.
"Is something else okay? I didn't bring any rice with me." Li Xiao asked calmly, looking at the uneasy man who had unconsciously hunched over.
Upon hearing the voice, the man quickly looked up and said, "Yes, yes, as long as it's food." His eyes reddened as he spoke.
"Hmm, cookies, instant noodles, okay? And water too."
The man never expected to be able to exchange his water for water; nowadays, water is a scarce resource and is rarely seen.
"Yes, yes, is there really water?" The man's eyes gleamed with excitement.
Li Xiao glanced around and saw that she had already attracted the attention of some people. Without saying much, she took out a black bag from her bag. Inside the bag were two bottles of water, two packs of biscuits, and four packs of instant noodles.
She didn't hand it directly to the man, but instead asked, "Do you have children?" She seemed to have overheard him mentioning it earlier.
The man was surprised that Li Xiao would ask him this, and after a second of hesitation, he replied, "Yes, there is a 10-year-old boy," his expression turning somewhat sad, "I want to get him some better food."
Seeing the man's strange expression, Li Xiao guessed that the child might be sick and nodded to indicate that she understood. Then she pretended to rummage through her bag, but actually put two packets of the child's favorite snacks inside.
She took out a black bag and handed it to the man to prevent it from being seen by someone with ulterior motives and causing trouble.
Their troubles are minor; what they fear is that their good intentions might backfire, preventing the man from returning home.
Seeing Li Xiao's cautiousness, the man understood her intention. He glanced around carefully and noticed several people subtly turning their heads, pretending to look at the items being sold at the stalls.
The man's heart tightened. He silently took the bag from Li Xiao's hand, and without even looking at it, stuffed it into his pocket.
They packed the items that Li Xiao and the others had their eye on into boxes and handed them to Li Xiao to pack.
Li Xiaohao asked curiously, "Aren't you going to take a look?"
The man looked up at her, smiled, and said, "No need to look, I can feel the weight in my hand, thank you, young lady."
The man understood that he had gotten a great deal; his things weren't worth that much at all. But he couldn't do anything about it now; someone was eyeing him. He could easily get into trouble if he wasn't careful.
There's nothing I can do today, but I'll do something next time I see it.
Li Xiao saw that the man was quite intelligent; he understood things in his heart, but didn't show it on his face, indicating that he was a shrewd and calculating person.
The two of them picked out what they wanted and left with smiles on their faces.
After they left, the man stopped setting up his stall, put the remaining items into a larger box, packed up the bed sheets, and left.
The person watching nearby, seeing nothing unusual, spat and looked away.
When the man returned to his home, opened the bag, and saw the food, water, and the chocolate and candy hidden underneath, tears streamed down his face.
That's when I understood why the girl asked if I had children; she had prepared things her child would like.
He never expected that there would still be kind people who would give him something he never dared to dream of, without asking him anything.
The child is sick, and medicine is hard to come by these days. Giving the child something sweet would probably make them feel much better.
