Chapter 175 Investigation

No one spoke, waiting quietly for the two of them to bring back the news they had found out.

"Uncle Meng, you tell us," Shao Jie said, eating the steamed bun in his hand and looking at Meng Yang.

Meng Yang didn't refuse, "Okay, I'll tell you, and you can fill in the missing parts."

"Um".

"We drove to the vicinity of the base and parked the car in a secluded spot without driving into the base. We sneaked in quietly to avoid alerting the enemy."

Everyone nodded in agreement; it was indeed better that way.

"We went inside to see if we could find Sun Cheng and the others first, but we didn't expect to run into them so quickly."

At this point, Meng Yang and Shao Jie both smiled, looking quite pleased.

"Oh? You ran into them?"

Meng Yang nodded, a smile playing on his lips, and said, "Yes, actually, to be precise, they are waiting for us."

Now everyone was even more surprised.

Yu Yanbin was very interested. "How so?"

Meng Yang glanced at them and continued, "They later told us that they would keep an eye on the door for the next couple of days to see if we would come over."

Cheng Shaolin raised an eyebrow, leaning back casually in his chair. "Why would they think of waiting there?"

Meng Yang took a sip of water. "Here's what happened. A team of people came back from the base that day, saying they were going to check out a nearby county."

"Later, news spread that someone had made a big commotion in that county town near the base that no one would go to."

"That team went to check, and then they said they encountered a bunch of people searching for supplies there."

At this point, Meng Yang's expression changed, becoming very gloomy.

Seeing this, everyone had a bad feeling; what was about to be said was definitely not nice.

Yu Yanbin also wanted to know what this group of people would say. His face was like a cold sculpture, its hard, cold lines intimidating.

"What did they say?" The icy tone was chilling.

Meng Yang glanced at his face, and after a while, he said, "After that team returned to the base, they talked about what happened at the base gate. Many people heard it and spread it around."

"They said they encountered a bunch of reckless idiots who dared to search for supplies in the most dangerous county town. Weren't they afraid of how they'd die?"

Everyone was stunned.

"Fuck your mother!" Xiao Peng, who was stunned for a moment, quickly reacted and cursed angrily.

Yu Yan and Cheng Shaolin leaned back in their chairs, both with equally grim expressions. One wore a cold expression, while the other leaned back casually, calmly playing with a dagger in his hand, a slight upward curve to his lips.

Everyone knew that neither of them was as calm and collected as they appeared on the surface.

Yu Yanbin twirled the dagger in his hand. "Go on."

Meng Yang sighed and continued, "They said this group of people are incredibly stupid. They were completely fooled by the captain's few words. They even brought out their precious cigarettes. It's such a trivial matter, and they're rushing to curry favor with him."

If they were just angry before, now they should be laughing in anger.

Cheng Shaolin stopped twirling the dagger, placed it on his knee, and smiled as he stared at the dagger in his hand, saying, "Originally, I just wanted to teach it a lesson. Now it seems I'll have to go for something bigger."

Yu Yanbin raised one of his drooping eyelids, tilted his head, and looked at Meng Yang. "Did he say anything else?"

"Yes, they were quite brazen. They were talking loudly right at the base entrance, and many people heard them. Sun Cheng and his group came after hearing the news, and then they listened to their discussions and descriptions of what the group of people looked like, and then they made their guesses."

"He heard the group excitedly chattering away, so he flattered one of them and coaxed him into telling them what happened that day. He also heard them say that they had robbed a house later, which was probably our residence."

"He guessed we would come to inquire about the situation, so he helped us find out."

Yu Yanbin understood, "I know I should thank them later."

Meng Yang understood that he was thanking Sun Cheng and the others for what they had done.

Yu Yanbin then turned to Shao Jie and asked, "Do you have anything to add?"

Shao Jie remained silent, sitting quietly and listening to Meng Yang speak.

Shao Jie was acting very strangely today. In the past, he would have definitely been furious and lost his temper. Today, however, he was very quiet and did not seem to be acting irritably.

When he heard Yu Yanbin ask him, Shao Jie glanced at him, took a deep breath, and then spoke.

"Uncle Meng has said most of what he wanted to say. The rest is just what those people said. Do you want to hear it?"

Shao Jie sat on a small stool, his hands clasped together on his knees, looking out the door at the sun-bleached ground.

Yu Yanbin chuckled, "Speak, what else can't you say?"

Shao Jie turned to look at his companions, each of whom was looking at him intently. He knew they wanted to know the truth.

He chuckled, "Since you're so eager to know, I'll tell you something."

Xiao Peng sat next to him and, seeing him dawdling, slapped him on the shoulder. "Hurry up and tell me, is there anything else you can't hear?"

Shao Jie was jolted to the side by the slap and fell towards the door. Xiao Peng quickly grabbed him, and Shao Jie glared at him.

Xiao Peng was also feeling guilty, not expecting that he had lost control of his strength and used too much.

"Hehe, I messed up."

Shao Jie was speechless. Luckily, he was a superhuman, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to withstand that slap.

Shao Jie sat up straight and looked towards the door. A leisurely voice drifted into his ears.

“They said we were idiots, trying to steal something from this dilapidated house. There was nothing there, and after searching for ages, it was cleaner than a face, with only some dried vegetables. They said we were definitely incompetent and cowardly, too afraid to go inside and search, and could only wander around outside.”

"And another thing is that he's timid but still wants to curry favor with them. He even has cigarettes on him, I wonder where he's hiding them. I'll come back to check next time."

"It made the other teams think we were a bunch of trash, easy to rob. That made the other teams very interested."

"Ha, very good, excellent. Come on, let's see who else comes."

As Yu Yanbin's face gradually darkened, everyone who had never seen their captain lose his temper before trembled.

Yu Yanbin's gaze was like a blade; if it could materialize, it would surely slice people into skulls piece by piece.

It must be said that everyone's face looked terrible, as black as ink.

Cheng Shaolin picked up the dagger, lowered his head slightly, and looked at its blade in the light. The blade flashed with a dazzling light.

The silver blade's edge shifted direction as the hand moved.

Are you sure someone will come?

"I don't know, I'm not sure if they'll come." Shao Jie wasn't sure either. "I've only heard them talking about it, I don't know if they'll really come."

Cheng Shaolin sneered, "It's even better that you're here; it saves trouble."
