The car was unusually quiet, with no talking and only the occasional sound of papers being turned over.
"Someone should have noticed the changes in the sky by now. I wonder if they've made any preparations?" Zheng Yongnian, who was usually quiet and rarely spoke, suddenly spoke up.
He seemed very worried.
The book in his hand was closed, and the cover had a line of large characters written on it—"The Great Cycle of the Apocalypse." The illustration on the cover was dark in color, depicting a corner of a ruined city.
It should be a novel.
Li Xiao glanced at it and then returned to looking at the booklet in her hand, but still answered Zheng Yongnian's question. "I don't know, there probably will be. The changes are so big, anyone with eyes can see it. Whether we're prepared or not, I don't know."
Leaning back in his chair with one long leg crossed over the other, Yu Yanbin said slowly and deliberately without even raising his head, "Those who know will definitely make preparations, but what they prepare is hard to say."
The change could be weather-related, or it could be something else entirely; it's hard to say.
It's hard to say what you'll need to prepare. Weather changes basically mean you'll need raincoats, rain boots, and umbrellas. These are the most common items. Beyond that, most people don't have the resources to prepare anything else.
Xiao Peng leaned back in his chair to rest. Upon hearing this, he closed his eyes and thought for a moment, "Rain and snow are fine, but what about other things? It would be more reliable to find a better place."
This is a point that everyone agrees with.
There are still some people with ideas; you can see other vehicles speeding by on the road. Judging by their speed and direction, they must be heading to the same destination.
"So there's still a smart one here." Shao Jie, who had already changed out, teased as he looked at the SUV that was crashing around recklessly in front of him.
"This is the third one we've seen, right?" Tian Tian leaned closer to him and peered out through the gap.
"Um."
"It seems like everyone feels something's not right." Meng Yang was also chatting with Captain Yu Yanbin, who was sitting next to him.
"Well, they're not all stupid; some of them are quite intelligent." He raised his eyelids slightly and continued, "They should all be highly capable individuals."
Meng Yang nodded, just like them, they were able to sense something was wrong very early on.
"The base is bustling," he said, laughing again. Meng Yang then turned to look at Yu Yanbin, "I wonder how this base is doing? Hopefully, it can achieve something."
Yu Yanbin pressed his hand on the book and spoke after a while, "I hope so. If it doesn't work out, we'll just keep going. We'll find something suitable eventually."
Meng Yang glanced outside and softly hummed in agreement, his voice so soft it was hard for anyone to hear.
Cheng Shaolin was sitting on the other side of them, so he could hear what they were saying. He closed his eyes to rest, keeping Li Xiao company as she dozed off beside him.
Li Xiao was very quiet, and he didn't disturb her, just quietly stayed by her side.
Li Xiao tilted her head to look at the heavy clouds overhead, feeling a tightness in her chest. She didn't want to talk, so she just rested there.
Cheng Shaolin stayed by her side, and although he didn't say a word, Li Xiao appreciated it.
When you're feeling down, having someone sincerely comfort you, even without saying a word, is very comforting.
Having someone silently protecting you is the greatest way to show your love and care.
Li Xiao didn't say it, but she felt very comforted, as if she were surrounded by gentle water. Every drop of water seeped into her skin, flowed into her blood vessels, and nourished every inch of her flesh.
The best way to tell if someone is good to you is when you're sick. Someone who takes good care of you and treats you with meticulous attention can't possibly be a bad person.
Li Xiao is experiencing this most deeply now. She knows herself, and she is slowly accepting it. She has no resistance to it. In the long river of time, through understanding, she will be able to know that person more accurately and understand that person.
She didn't want to do anything she would regret; she was afraid of getting hurt.
Now, she felt confident that she wouldn't get hurt. However, she lowered her eyelids and looked at her hands.
My hands aren't as fair as they were when I first arrived; they've gotten much darker from the sun and have some calluses.
She was no longer the Li Xiao she had been as a child. She knew it herself, but she didn't know it. She turned to look at the man sitting next to her.
The man was resting against the back of his chair, his eyes closed and his brows slightly furrowed. His deep, magnetic eyes were not open, only his thin eyelids and long eyelashes were visible. Below his high, straight nose, his thin lips were tightly pressed together, and even his jawline was taut.
Is he thinking about something?
Does he really like me?
Do you still prefer the Li Xiao of the past?
While she was lost in thought, she didn't notice that the man she was staring at had opened his eyes.
Actually, Cheng Shaolin already knew when she turned her head to look. He wasn't asleep or pretending to be asleep. He just had his eyes closed.
In this emergency, he will not let his guard down, especially not when Li Xiao is feeling unwell.
When Li Xiao looked at him, he didn't open his eyes immediately. In those few seconds, he realized that Li Xiao was staring at him, completely absorbed.
He knew his own level of attractiveness and understood that he still had some assets that could attract women.
Otherwise, why would Zhen Zhen have pursued him so relentlessly? Part of the reason was because of her face.
Cheng Shaolin: Is it because I'm good-looking that Xiaoxiao is stunned?
Cheng Shaolin felt a little sweet. When he opened his eyes, he found Li Xiao in a daze.
It didn't seem like she was just staring blankly at his face; it seemed like she was thinking about something.
Cheng Shaolin didn't understand what was wrong with Li Xiao either, and didn't say anything, just looked at her. He looked at her somewhat listless face and thought about his own things.
My thoughts drifted away. I didn't know when I started to like this little girl, when I felt she had changed, when I realized she was more suited to the apocalypse, or when I discovered she was more attractive now.
Cheng Shaolin looked at Li Xiao's face, his mind racing with thoughts. But he didn't compare the two Li Xiaos; he didn't have that many thoughts in mind, he just wanted to like her properly. He wouldn't know that he was encountering two different souls, two different personalities.
And so, the two people sitting together each had their own thoughts.
They were so close, yet they were unaware of each other's thoughts.
What happened between them was unknown to others. They were still discussing passing vehicles, surrounding buildings, and their future lives.
The car was still speeding along, and the clouds in the sky were gradually changing, causing panic among many people. More and more people were beginning to realize something was wrong, but it was too late. They wanted to get to the base, but they didn't know if they would have enough time.
Those inside the base were relieved to be already there; no matter what happened next, they weren't worried anymore.
The people in Li Xiao's car had no idea what others were thinking. Their most urgent task right now was to find the Yingcheng base.
"It'll be there soon, in less than an hour."
Hearing this, everyone secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
I looked up at the sky again, hoping I could hold on for another hour.
