Chapter 25 Exploration

Their car was parked at the entrance of town, right where they had just entered.

They started searching house by house from the edge of town. The house next to theirs was a two-story building, which was very clean.

The yard was enclosed, with trees planted on either side of the entrance, which appeared to be orange trees. The trees were dead, leaving only withered yellow leaves and trunks. The ground was concrete, and there was nothing but black stuff on it.

After everyone entered, they cautiously looked around. Seeing that there was nothing in the courtyard, they prepared to go inside to take a look. The gate was open, and they could see a square table and chairs inside.

The group split up and began searching the house. Li Xiao went to a room on the right, while the kitchen and toilet were on the left. Meng Yang went upstairs with the team leader; there were three people downstairs and two upstairs. They could be heard if someone called out, so they were relatively safe.

The room she went to was clearly occupied; it contained a bed, a row of cabinets, and a small table against the wall. It was very tidy, with everything arranged neatly. Except the bed, which looked messy—the sheets were tangled together and there were some red bloodstains, though they had already turned black.

There were a few pieces of clothing hanging in the closet, all men's. Nothing else. She pulled open a small drawer under the table; inside were some papers with daily notes.

After looking around and finding nothing, I strolled out of the room. There I saw Uncle Li and Tian Tian just coming out of the kitchen. Judging from the bags they were carrying, they must have found something.

The smiles on their faces were so obvious; they must have had a good harvest. She couldn't help but feel happy too. Who doesn't like to have a good harvest? Life is easier after a good harvest.

Tian Tian came over and told her that she found most of a bag of rice, noodles, some dried vegetables, and some seasonings in the kitchen. Some of the things were rotten, which was a pity.

Li Xiao comforted her, saying that it was good enough that they found anything; it was normal for things to be rotten. Uncle Li agreed, saying that if one family could find so much stuff, there were many other families behind them, and the total amount would be considerable. This made Tian Tian very interested again.

As they were chatting and laughing, they came downstairs. Upstairs, there were two rooms and a living room. The rooms were empty, but showed signs of struggle, and one room contained evidence of a zombie, indicating that zombies had once inhabited the town.

Everyone's mood darkened further, but the answer would eventually come.

We found some snacks upstairs; perhaps the upstairs residents are young people, and they have a wide variety of snacks, so there were some left over. Combined with what we found in the downstairs kitchen, this family reaped quite a lot, which made everyone very happy.

They took everything to the car next door. Aunt Zhang and the others had already finished cleaning up the house; there were still things in the kitchen, so they gathered them all out.

I saw that they had brought them back and put them together.

There were two and a half bags of rice, four packs of noodles, a lot of dried vegetables, and onions and potatoes, but the potatoes had all sprouted.

There were also peanuts and mung beans. The team leader was very happy to see the peanuts and said he would roast them that night. Uncle Li also hurriedly agreed.

Seeing how eagerly they looked made Aunt Zhang laugh heartily.

Tian Tian told Li Xiao that there were still a few bottles of wine in the car that they hadn't drunk. Today, the peanuts in the space had whetted the appetites of the team leader and Uncle Li.

With smiles on their faces, they set off again.

Continue exploring forward from this point, and then explore back from the other side at the end of that line; you can then return all the way back.

When Aunt Chen saw that Xiao Fei had brought back a lot of snacks, she asked him to come along so he could help carry them. Everyone understood, but felt it was a minor issue and, as long as it wasn't excessive, they let it go.

Xiaofei came along on this trip. It's good to give him some experience; he's 14 now and understands a lot of things.

Xiao Fei followed behind without saying a word, giving off a somewhat gloomy vibe.

For a child this age to suddenly face a different world, there is bound to be some contrast.

Facing his father's death and the subsequent hardships of making a living, growing up suddenly requires a lot of courage. As long as he is a good child, people are not stingy in giving him opportunities to grow.

The next few families were in similar situations to the previous one; each had some surplus grain, but not much.

That's true. Nowadays, people don't store large amounts of food at home like they used to. Not only does it not taste good if left for too long, but it's also prone to getting infested with insects. Now, people only buy rice after finishing a bag. Supermarkets have everything, so there's no worry about not being able to find what they need.

At most, each household would eat one bag and store one bag, no more than that. After visiting three or five households, there were only four bags of rice left, and even those that had been opened were packed together.

Every household here has dried vegetables stored up, which they really need now. They don't care that the vegetables aren't fresh anymore, since fresh vegetables can't be stored until now.

I also found some dried shiitake mushrooms, which are a real treat; I haven't had them in ages. The dried green beans and dried broad beans were also quite good.

In addition, I found a jar of pickled vegetables at a store. I even brought the jar to the car; it'll be great to eat with porridge.

The search was quick, and I wanted to figure out the situation before dark.

This much supplies is enough; there's no room for anything more. They only have two vehicles, and they need to carry people.

Take the essentials first, like rice, noodles, and dried vegetables. Snacks take up too much space, so avoid them if possible. However, there aren't many snacks to choose from anyway.

As we neared the end, a shadowy patch appeared ahead. I hadn't noticed what it was before.

No one dared to move around freely. Li Xiao put down the map and discovered some strange energy in the area.

The shadow was very large, and now that it was slowly getting dark, only that shadow was exceptionally dark.
