Chapter 9 Being Watched

Li Xiao still goes out every day to kill zombies to train himself and collect supplies.

She had already cleared out many shops on the main street, including the supermarket she had long desired. She wanted to clear as much as possible; there's never too much merchandise. She also wanted to see if there was a way out of the city.

On the 5th day, the water was cut off. On the 6th day, the power was cut off.

Li Xiao had previously cooked all the vegetables in the refrigerator and stored them in her space. She also made a lot of rice balls and cooked a lot of noodles. She didn't know how to make steamed buns or dumplings, so she could only make pancakes.

After cleaning up everything and making sure nothing was left behind, I carried my backpack and went downstairs and out of the community before it was fully light.

This neighborhood is uninhabitable; the power outage makes climbing the stairs incredibly difficult. I'd be exhausted to get back, and then have to climb 14 flights of stairs – just thinking about it makes me want to give up. I had already planned not to stay here for long, and after last night's conflict, I'm even less likely to stay here.

She came back safely, carrying a bag, and people will be envious.

Sure enough, that evening, someone came knocking on her door.

With this possibility in mind, Li Xiao stayed up all night and sat on the sofa. Just after 8 p.m., she heard footsteps.

"Knock knock knock",

"Knock knock knock knock",

The knocking on the door continued incessantly.

"Is anyone there?" It was a woman's voice. Very cautiously, softly.

"Could you please open the door?"

"No." It seems she's definitely home.

"Can I...can I come in and talk to you?" Her voice was still soft and gentle, full of grievance. It was like seeing pear blossoms with petals falling, trembling delicately on the tips of leaves, like a white lotus, wanting to speak but unable to, gently swaying in the breeze with tenderness.

Hearing that voice evokes a desire to protect it.

"Tsk, it's late, please go back." I'm straightforward, no need.

"Please, could you let me in first? I really have something to say, please." It seems that not letting him in was a huge mistake. He was almost in tears; his voice was trembling with sobs.

"Stop knocking, let's go back." Li Xiao didn't want to talk to her anymore.

...

They stopped responding to knocking after that.

"Open the door, you filthy bitch, don't push your luck." Emotional appeals are useless; it's time to get physical.

"Little sister, I advise you to open the door. You'll have to go out eventually, and it won't be good for you if things get tense." Having failed to achieve her goal, she no longer needed to pretend. Her gentleness turned into indifference.

Wow, that's a really smooth face-changing move.

"Ha, do you all think people are idiots?" Li Xiao's temper flared up. What kind of people are you? If being gentle doesn't work, you try being forceful. Do you think anyone's brain is malfunctioning or has been damaged?

"Don't waste your energy. You know what you're thinking, and I understand. Nobody's stupid enough to give things away for free, and I'm not a saint," she said coldly. Then she ignored them and walked straight back to the sofa to sit down.

Once the people outside realized that Li Xiao wouldn't open the door, they also started banging on it in a fit of rage.

The woman with the sweet, delicate voice also lives in this building. She speaks softly and gently, but is quite alluring, with fair skin, willow-leaf eyebrows, captivating eyes, and thin, rosy lips. She lives in apartment 803 downstairs; she's divorced, and the loud-voiced man is her current boyfriend.

"What do we do now? She won't open the door." She looked at the man, who was 1.8 meters tall, quite burly and strong, with a dark complexion and fierce eyes.

"You want her to open the door, or she's not coming out!" the man said harshly, clearly displeased.

The woman's eyes flickered after hearing this, and she quickly agreed.

No matter how much the woman knocked on the door or how much she cried, the result was the same. The man kicked the door hard, slashed at it with a knife, and cursed under his breath.

Li Xiao sat on the sofa, listening to the constant noise outside. She wondered if the door would hold up; it seemed this place was no longer safe to live in.

She didn't collect any of the supplies in the building, leaving the people inside while she went out to collect them herself. Eventually, she even considered taking them to her own home, seeing that she was reaping a harvest every day and got the idea.

People are unwilling to face danger, yet they bully the weak—that's just how reality is.

Li Xiao wasn't idle either; she was packing her belongings, preparing to leave tomorrow morning, as it was no longer safe to stay here. It would be troublesome if they really blocked her home.

Let's look for a better place when we go out to collect tomorrow. There are plenty of houses out there now, so we won't have trouble finding a place.

The people outside made a scene but failed to achieve their goal, and left disappointed. They even uttered some harsh words before storming downstairs.

The surrounding residents didn't dare to make a sound; who would dare to step forward at a time like this?

The matter had temporarily subsided, but Li Xiao knew it wasn't over; once it happened, it would happen again. She was being targeted, and as a young girl, she was clearly the weaker party. Everyone wanted to take advantage of her, and since she was also beautiful, it gave them even more reason to do so.

In chaotic times, beautiful women are easy targets. Unless you have a powerful backer or great strength, you'll just be someone people want to take advantage of.

Li Xiao has no powerful connections, so she can only rely on her own abilities.

That's why she's been working so hard to kill zombies.

In the apocalypse, if women don't know how to be self-reliant, why should they rely on others? This is something she doesn't want to see. She wants to live by her own efforts, not by relying on others.

It gradually quieted down. The building had been mostly cleared out over the past few days, and we hadn't heard any zombie roars anymore.

She packed her backpack, emptied her belongings from the room, and gently opened the door.

It was still dark, and it was very quiet at 4 a.m.

Zombies are more active at night, but it's better to leave now. She didn't want to run into anyone; although she wasn't afraid of trouble, less trouble was always better.

Listening to the sounds in the darkness, I slowly walked down the stairs.

It was pitch black in front of her, and she couldn't see anything. She took out her flashlight and turned it on, and a warm white beam of light shone ahead.

I walked slowly downstairs, turned off my flashlight, and ran quickly across the street.

In the pitch-black night, without the bright lights and bustling activity, one can only rely on hearing.

The zombies around her, drawn by the scent of living beings, were already heading towards her. Unwilling to linger, she charged straight towards the commercial street. It was the street where she had previously gathered supplies, only two streets away from where she lived.

The roars of zombies were clearly audible in the darkness.

She ran past the supermarket she'd passed before, then to a lingerie store she'd searched thoroughly; the doors and windows were intact, and it was just around the corner. This was the place she'd initially thought of; she'd stay there until dawn.

A line of zombies followed behind her, and the zombies in front of her also surrounded her. She ran and killed as she went, but her pace gradually slowed down.

Seeing that there were still a few steps to go, he quickened his chopping speed. He severed the neck of the zombie in front of him and quickly slipped into the lingerie store.

She closed the door and took out the table she had previously put away to block it. It was a marble table she had collected from someone else's house, thinking she could use it to smash zombies if she couldn't win in the future, and now it came in handy.

The door was blocked, preventing the zombies outside from getting in, who frantically scratched at the door.

The door panel is made of glass, tempered glass. Scratching it makes a really satisfying, grating sound...

Li Xiao caught her breath and quickly covered her ears. The sound made her soul tremble, and goosebumps screamed all over her body.

Unable to bear it any longer, she slipped into the spatial dimension...

Well, it's quiet now...
