Chapter 12 Confession
So that's how it is.
Jiang Zhan was different from her. He was dreaming, not reborn. Qiao Yu didn't know whether to be happy or sad, but tears kept falling. She held Jiang Zhan's hand tightly, choking with sobs, and said, "Ah Zhan... that wasn't a dream, not a dream... that was all real..."
Jiang Zhan didn't say anything, but just held Qiao Yu's trembling body in his arms, gently stroking her hair, silently comforting her.
Qiao Yu calmed down for a long time before gently pushing Jiang Zhan away, looking directly into his eyes, and asked softly: "Zhan, do you believe me?"
A trace of infatuation flashed across Jiang Zhan's eyes. These beautiful eyes finally gave him a glimpse of her. He took Qiao Yu's hand, gently held it, and replied without hesitation, "Of course I believe you."
Qiao Yu bit her lip, her heart hardened, and she said seriously: "Ah Zhan, every word I say next will overturn all your cognition so far, but they are indeed real. I am calm and normal, and I am not talking crazy, so I hope you will listen to what I say carefully and don't doubt me, okay?"
Jiang Zhan stared at her quietly. He didn't say anything, and Qiao Yu didn't say anything either. Until Jiang Zhan nodded and said "OK".
Qiao Yu looked at Jiang Zhan with a calm expression, but his tone was firm and convincing: "Zhan, in fact, since I woke up in the hospital after having a fever, I have no longer been the same person before. The me now is the me who has experienced my previous life. Or to put it another way, I was reborn with the memories of my previous life."
Although Jiang Zhan didn't speak and had no facial expression, Qiao Yu could still feel his shock from his suddenly sharp eyes.
"Actually, I didn't believe it at first, but that's the truth. My 24-year-old self from my previous life died and returned to my current self."
Jiang Zhan didn't hear anything else, only grasping one key point, and a fierce look flashed in his eyes: "Who killed you?"
Qiao Yu's eyelashes suddenly trembled slightly, and then she replied in a low voice: "It's... aliens. They are the monsters in your dreams." Although she was deliberately murdered, she did die at the hands of aliens in the end, so it was not considered a lie to him.
Jiang Zhan sensitively caught her fleeting pause, but didn't say anything more. He just followed her words and asked, "Alien species?"
"Yes, I lived in such fear and anxiety for four years, and eventually died in the encirclement of the alien tide."
Jiang Zhan listened to her story without saying anything, but began to slowly knead her hand again, as if to encourage her to continue.
Qiao Yu didn't know whether he really believed it, but since she had started, she had no intention of stopping.
"Before my rebirth, everything I experienced was exactly the same as in my previous life. The only difference is that I changed the trajectory of my life after my rebirth. But I don't think this can prevent the arrival of the apocalypse, because everything that has happened since my rebirth has been exactly the same as in my previous life. If the apocalypse is still coming in this life, then tomorrow is the first sign day."
"The first sign day?" Jiang Zhan repeated the new term she mentioned, his tone puzzled.
Qiao Yu nodded. "Yes, it's the day when the first signs of the apocalypse appear. In my previous life, a massive geomagnetic storm occurred on the first day of the sign."
"Circuit and communication interruptions?" Jiang Zhan knew this. During a strong magnetic storm, the Earth's magnetic field undergoes dramatic fluctuations. Furthermore, because magnetic storms occur globally, GICs can cause hundreds of transformers across the entire power grid to experience simultaneous half-wave saturation, causing some protective devices to trip and malfunction, resulting in a severe voltage drop in the power supply system, leading to system collapse and widespread blackouts.
Qiao Yu continued nodding. "Well, actually, today's citywide power outage was already a sign, but it wasn't obvious. It was only affecting certain provinces and cities, but tomorrow, it will be a global one. When the magnetic storm occurred in my previous life, although it caused some problems with the circuit and communication systems, the impact only lasted for two days, so people didn't pay much attention. But then, many patients began to appear all over the world with high fevers, comas, and even body ulcers. All the fever-reducing injections and antibiotics were useless. For a time, the hospitals were overcrowded, but the cause was impossible to find. The country established an emergency research team to study the cause and characteristics of this disease, but before the experts could find any results, five days later, on the morning of January 35th, a red rain fell."
Jiang Zhan's eyebrows moved slightly, indicating Qiao Yu to continue.
"Just like the magnetic storm, it's not just in a certain city or country, but on a global scale. Because no one has ever seen such a strange thing as red rain falling from the sky, many people deliberately ran outside to get wet in the rain. People say that this is a blessing from God and can bring us good luck. But little do they know that this is the beginning of a nightmare..." Qiao Yu's voice was a little choked, but he still tried to stay calm.
"The red rain lasted all day and all night, not stopping until six o'clock the next morning. Cities, villages, forests, lakes and seas... the entire surface of the earth was soaked in red rain, as red as blood. Even more bizarre was that so much accumulated water was completely absorbed by the earth and evaporated in just one hour."
"During the day the red rain continued, hospital patients and those who had been caught in the rain began to die in large numbers. Even more terrifying, after the rain stopped, all of these dead people came back to life."
Jiang Zhan's eyes turned cold, "Is this the monster that came back to life from the dead in my dream?"
Qiao Yu nodded. "Yes. Humans have named these monsters aliens. Although they retain their appearance in life, they grow long and sharp fangs, their pupils turn gray, their blood turns yellow, and all the hair on their bodies falls out. There is a noticeable protrusion on the back of their heads, and their skulls are abnormally hard. Their arms grow longer, and their nails turn black, sharp and powerful. They crawl on all fours like animals. They are irrational and cannot speak. They feed on living people, biting anyone they see, and can even pierce a person's chest with their bare hands and dig out their organs. As long as their body fluids or blood come into contact with the wound, it will be infected and turn into a new alien species."
"And it's not just humans who are experiencing these mutations; animals and plants have also mutated. The most obvious change is that they've become extremely large, like... two-meter-tall bushes, cats as big as lions, and some have even changed their appearance. Some of these mutated plants and animals will also attack humans, either eating them or killing them, only to transform back into their own species... It's a vicious cycle."
"After the apocalypse broke out, everything humans relied on for survival was contaminated, and the living space was greatly reduced. All parts of the world fell into this situation. As more and more humans were infected, the government began to issue emergency notices and dispatched troops to establish survivor bases in various places in an attempt to protect the surviving humans. Unfortunately, it was a drop in the bucket." Qiao Yu sighed softly.
"However, there are a small number of lucky individuals who rise from the ashes in this harsh environment. Most of them have awakened superpowers due to a virus that modified their genes, giving them the ability to protect themselves in the apocalypse. These people are called 'others.' Have you ever dreamed of this?"
Jiang Zhan shook his head, tucked the hair that was hanging down beside her ears behind her ears, and asked softly, "Is Ayu an alien?"
Qiao Yu rubbed his hand and forced a smile, "Yeah. In my previous life, I was a nature-type mutant, and my ability was ice."
