Chapter 2 Red Marriage Certificate

I can't sleep. I'm so hungry.

I rummaged around in the cabinet and finally found two dollars. I remembered that there was a county town seven kilometers away, so I decided to go out.

After taking her time to wash up, she found that Ling Yong had returned from exercise and had brought her a breakfast of millet porridge, pickles, and cornmeal cakes.

There was no time to be reserved, and he took two gulps at a time. Looking at the girl in front of him who had no ladylike image at all, Ling Yong felt very upset.

"I'll give you 20 yuan, go buy something for yourself." He didn't even have a decent set of clothes.

Looking at the two ten-dollar bills on the table, Ling Ju's eyes suddenly lit up!

"Thank you, brother. You are truly my brother!"

Ling Yong felt a little strange listening to Ling Ju's praise. Ling Ju didn't usually talk like that. He thought of it as her joy at getting married soon.

Then he dressed neatly and went to work.

After dinner, Ling Ju grabbed a cloth bag and prepared to go to the county town. Unexpectedly, she ran into Captain Li's wife, Hongying, as soon as she left the house.

"Sister-in-law Hongying." After greeting her politely, Hongying came over with a smile on her face.

"Comrade Xiao Ling, are you going out?"

"Yes, I'm planning to go to the county town. I'm out of a lot of daily necessities at home, and there's nothing to eat."

"Xiao Ling, you don't have to go out to buy food. Our regiment has planted ten acres of land. If you want to eat, you can go and work there. You can get some food!"

"Really?" If you don't know how to farm, you can learn!

"If you want to go, you can come to my house and I'll take you." Hongying was worried that no one would go. The food wasn't that big, and usually only she and the political commissar's wife, Liu Lin, went because they had to take the lead. The others were either taking care of their children or working, so they didn't have much time.

"Sister-in-law, I'm going to the county town to buy some daily necessities. I wonder if I can come back early this afternoon. I'll come to see you tomorrow."

"Okay, no problem."

After saying goodbye to Hongying, I walked towards the county town. It was a seven-kilometer journey. Because I was too fat, I had to stop and start frequently. It took me two full hours to get there. I felt like my legs were not my own. It would have been great if I had a bicycle.

Ling Ju sighed, thinking that the streets in the 1980s were like this. Most of the vehicles were bicycles, and donkey carts and rickshaws were also common. There were very few cars, and most of them were buses.

The impact of the times came out all of a sudden.

After walking around, I found that there were mostly small stalls selling home-grown vegetables and fruits, as well as a very small variety of side dishes. I also bought some daily necessities such as toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, etc. in a state-owned store, as well as a bag of milk candy and two pounds of millet.

I saw a pharmacy on the street and went in to ask if there was any medicine to treat my face. An old doctor took my pulse and said I had heat on the upper body and cold on the lower body, and irregular menstruation.

I was then prescribed two weeks of Chinese medicine. If it works, I'll continue taking more medicine.

When I left, I found a scale in the pharmacy, so I secretly weighed myself and found I was 175 pounds.

A weight that I could never reach in my previous life.

I bought a new towel, a large, pure white vest, two large shorts, and two pairs of socks. I had three yuan left from the money Ling Yong had given me. I was about to buy something for lunch when I saw a three-story building in front of me, and someone was shouting something out a loud speaker.

I walked over and found that they were recruiting.

It turned out that a textile factory was recruiting workers. The big-character poster listed the recruitment requirements, positions, salary range, and they even wanted to recruit people who could speak foreign languages!

A handsome man in a short-sleeved suit and trousers was shouting, "Hello everyone, we at Xingxing Textile Factory are hiring! Please see our recruitment notice. We are hiring financial accountants, textile workers, chefs, security guards, and sales!"

"Brother, what is sales?" asked the older sister in the crowd.

"Sister, I just need to understand some documents and contracts, be able to sell things, and have good eloquence!"

"Well, I'm not good at speaking, but I can be a worker."

"We have a lot of positions and a lot of people to recruit. Interested brothers, sisters, uncles, and aunts can line up on the right to fill out the form."

Ling Ju felt that this opportunity could not be missed. She was capable of doing this job and she also knew English!

"Hey, big brother, is it okay if I know a little English?" Sales. Ling Ju worked in a foreign company in his previous life, as a sales clerk.

"Sure, sister, would it be convenient for you to come upstairs for the interview?"

"What time?"

"It's right upstairs. Come with me and fill out a form so we can do a simple test. Don't worry, we're a legitimate textile factory. My name is Hu Wei, I'm 27 years old, and I'm the recruitment manager at Xingxing Textile Factory. How old are you?"

"My name is Ling Ju. I will be the Ling of the top. I am the orange of the orange and green. I am 19 years old."

Hu Wei led Ling Ju to his upstairs office and poured her a cup of tea. He then handed her a form, essentially a condensed resume, requiring her to include her name, gender, ethnicity, education, home address, and phone number.

"Brother Hu, I don't have a phone at home. I live in the military housing compound. Can you write down the compound's phone number?"

"So you're a military dependent. You can write. It's okay."

After filling in the information neatly, Hu Wei took out a test paper.

Looking at the questions above, they are too simple. The first question requires you to write an English self-introduction of no less than 50 words. The second question is to translate English into Chinese, which only requires ten words.

After finishing writing quickly, he looked up and found Hu Wei looking at him with a look of affirmation in his eyes, "You really know English!"

"Ah, otherwise, I can't come if I don't know how, haha!"

"I didn't expect Miss Lingju, who may not look very good, to write English words well. Her smooth handwriting shows that she practices a lot."

"It's not that bad. We have established diplomatic relations with Country M. I figured learning a language would be useful, so I'll just study at home."
