After Wenli entered the room, Ma Aning locked the door behind her, then leaned close to her mother's ear and whispered a few words.
After hearing her daughter's words, Wenli's eyes widened instantly, like copper bells, and she glared at Ma Aning reproachfully.
Then, he said in an annoyed tone, "My dear girl, that cellar isn't something you can just dig up casually, and it has to be dug so deep!"
“How could our son-in-law possibly accomplish this alone? No, I’ll go home first and call your father and your two younger brothers to come and help.”
"With more people, the work will naturally be much faster. I estimate it won't be long before we finish digging!"
Ma Aning didn't quite agree with her mother's idea and quickly waved her hand, saying, "Oh, Mother, there's no need to trouble Father and my brothers."
"Let him dig secretly at night by himself. It may take more time, but he can finish it slowly."
"Think about it, Dad and his brothers have worked all day and are exhausted. They need to get a good rest at night."
Hearing this, Wenli frowned and said sarcastically, "My dear daughter, how can you be so inconsiderate? What if your son-in-law really ruins his health by digging a cellar all by himself?"
"Okay, if my son-in-law really can't hold on any longer and can't take it anymore, you can't stop me from finding someone to help him!"
Seeing her mother's resolute attitude, Ma Aning had no choice but to obediently nod and reply, "Okay, Mom, I know." After saying that, a bright smile, as radiant as spring flowers, immediately bloomed on her face.
"Today is the baby's third-day celebration, but in such difficult times, it's obviously impossible to have a big celebration."
Wenli slapped her forehead and said as if suddenly realizing something, "Oh dear, look at my memory! If I hadn't suddenly remembered, I probably would have missed it. I'll go pick some more mugwort around noon and give the children a good bath."
After saying that, she couldn't help but frown slightly, secretly annoyed that she had been so distracted by the matter of the cellar that she had almost forgotten about such an important event as the baby's third-day celebration.
Hearing Wenli mention the children's third-day celebration, Ma Aning sighed and slowly said, "Alas, there's nothing we can do. We're struggling to make ends meet right now, but it's alright. When things get better, we'll make up for all the gifts we owe the children."
Wenli nodded slightly, indicating her agreement with her daughter's words. At the same time, she sighed helplessly and said, "Yes, that's all we can do. We just hope that things will go smoothly from now on and that the children can have a good life."
Just then, Wenli glanced up at the sky and hurriedly stood up, saying, "Oh dear, look at the time! I have to hurry to the kitchen to prepare lunch for you, otherwise everyone will be hungry later."
Before she finished speaking, she moved like an arrow and quickly entered the kitchen, starting to get busy.
Seeing this, Ma Aning hurriedly followed and called out with concern when she reached the kitchen door, "Mom, you must be tired from walking all this way. Take a rest for a while, have some water to calm down. It's okay if we cook the meal a little later."
Wenli's resolute voice came from the kitchen: "I'm not tired at all. Don't worry about me. Go back to your room and lie down. I'm fine here."
Knowing her mother's stubborn nature, Ma Aning could only shake her head and turn back to her room as instructed.
Ma Aning saw that the two little ones on the bed were not crying or making a fuss. Her daughter was holding her son's hand tightly, and her son let her hold on, without any intention of pulling away.
Ma Aning found that her son was also particularly easy to take care of, but she didn't think about it any other way.
Before long, a sumptuous lunch was ready.
One of the dishes was a crucian carp soup specially prepared for Ma Aning. The crucian carp was specially delivered by Shen Yiyan yesterday.
"Brother Shan, get up and eat!" Ma Aning called softly, her voice as gentle as a clear spring flowing into Chen Zishan's ears.
Shen Zishan slowly woke up, opening his eyes, but his eyes were full of confusion, as if he had not yet come to his senses and did not know where he was or what he was doing.
It wasn't until his gaze fell on the child in Ma Aning's arms that he suddenly sat up as if waking from a dream, and said anxiously.
"Honey, how can you cook for yourself? And you can't touch cold water right now!" Her words were full of concern.
Ma Aning smiled slightly and explained softly, "I didn't cook this meal. Mother came over early this morning to help. Let's get up quickly and not keep Mother waiting too long." As she spoke, she gently patted the child in her arms.
Upon hearing this, Shen Zishan immediately got up, quickly tidied his clothes, and then strode towards the door.
As soon as he stepped out of the room, he greeted his mother-in-law, who was busy in the kitchen, with a big smile: "Mom, you're here!"
Wenli turned around upon hearing this, looked at her spirited son-in-law, and smiled as she replied, "Go wash your hands and get ready for dinner."
“You can’t work so hard again. Digging a cellar all night long, even someone with an iron body can’t take it. If you don’t have enough manpower, ask your father and your two younger brothers to come and lend a hand.” Wenli also felt sorry for her son-in-law.
"Mother, don't worry, I know what I'm doing. I definitely won't overwork myself again, after all, I still have to take good care of them, mother and children." Shen Zishan sincerely assured his mother-in-law.
"Okay, that's good. Alright, stop dawdling and come eat! After you finish eating, go back to your room and get a good night's sleep. Look at your panda eyes!" Wenli said, quickly setting out the bowls and chopsticks while urging Shen Zishan to come and eat.
Although the meal was simple, the family enjoyed it together in a very warm and cozy atmosphere, and the two children stayed quietly in their room without crying or making a fuss.
In stark contrast to the chaotic scene of fighting over food in the old house, this place is filled with mutual courtesy and care.
Looking at the harmonious scene before him, Shen Zishan couldn't help but smile, revealing a genuine smile.
Time flew by and it was around noon. The sunlight streamed perfectly into the courtyard. Wenli brought over a basin of warm water, in which fragrant mugwort leaves were soaking.
She gently carried the two children into the sunlight and tenderly washed their bodies. Strangely enough, the two little ones didn't cry or fuss at all, quietly enjoying their grandmother's care!
