Chapter 17 Heavy

“Then you’ll come to work with us today. What are you supposed to do at home? You can’t even do something as simple as clearing the table, and we have to rely on our pregnant daughter-in-law. You might as well go and earn work points,” he said heavily.

“I’m not going. I’m so old, and my three sons are all grown up. Why should I go out and earn work points? I’ll just clean the table and cook dinner. I’ll treat her like royalty and not let her do any work, okay?” Qian Daniu said indignantly.

"I'm warning you one more time. If you continue like this and don't know what's good for you, then get back to your parents' house." He said this harshly.

"You old geezer, I've been with you for most of my life, and now you want me to go back to my parents' home? Will there still be a place for me there? I don't want to live anymore!" Qian Daniu sat down on the ground and cried out.

“Try crying again,” he said, glaring heavily at Qian Danu.

Qian Danu stopped crying, scrambled to her feet, and went to the kitchen to tidy up the table.

Instead of taking a midday nap, he picked up a pipe from the table and started smoking. Amidst the billowing smoke, no one knew what he was thinking.

In the past, Ma Aning would obediently come out whenever her mother-in-law called her and clean the house spotless.

He stared heavily at the tightly closed door, muttering to himself, "This old woman is calling out like this, why isn't anyone coming out?"

He couldn't help but feel uneasy, unable to figure out what the third brother and his wife were thinking, or what the third brother's wife was thinking now.

Meanwhile, Shen Xiaoxiao was still muttering to herself, but soon fell into a deep sleep again.

Meanwhile, the other little one inside her belly first spaced out, and then, as if infected by the idea, quickly drifted off to sleep.

As Ma Aning watched her belly gradually calm down, her previously tense nerves relaxed a little.

She slowly closed her eyes, thinking she could finally get some rest, but little did she know that this sleep would turn into a series of nightmares.

In her dream, her child arrived in the world prematurely, and she herself suffered from chronic illnesses due to a difficult childbirth, her health deteriorating day by day.

She passed away just two short years later, leaving her husband and young daughter alone and miserable, living a life worse than death.

The horrific scene startled Ma Aning so much that she trembled and jolted awake from her nightmare.

She was panting heavily, looking out the window, still shaken.

It was already quite late, and the surroundings were quiet, with only the faint sounds of people talking after work coming from afar.

Ma Aning rubbed her sleepy eyes and realized that she had actually slept until the end of the workday, and was still in a daze.

Ma Aning got up, opened the door to go to the toilet, and slowly walked back in.

Smelling the aroma of food wafting from the kitchen, Ma Aning was surprised. "I never thought I'd be eating my mother-in-law's cooking today."

Just then, Qian Danu from the kitchen finished cooking a dish and brought it out. When she saw Ma Aning standing in the yard, she was about to say something, but then she remembered what the old man had said that afternoon and didn't dare to cause any more trouble.

He completely ignored Ma Aning, put the dishes on the table, and went back to the kitchen.

Ma Aning returned to her room and sat on the bed in a daze. Her family members gradually returned home.

Soon, a commotion arose in the courtyard, with the sounds of three children jumping and playing.

Shen Zishan returned before it got completely dark.

"San'er's back! How was your day? Did everything go smoothly?" As the patriarch, Zhong Chen would ask this question every day.

"The same as always," Shen Zishan replied with a smile, without revealing any emotion.

"It's good that you're alright. Go and call your wife out for dinner. The food is all ready."

Upon hearing his father's words, Shen Zishan immediately rushed to his room and saw his wife sitting on the bed in a daze.

"Wife, what are you thinking about?" Shen Zishan sat down next to Ma Aning and put his arm around her.

"I wasn't thinking about anything? You're back. Did everything go smoothly?" Ma Aning asked, snapping out of her reverie.

Shen Zishan glanced outside the door and found no one eavesdropping. "I told the director everything, and he agreed to buy my job and agree to put on a show with me."

Ma Aning stared at Shen Zishan with a suspicious look on her face, her brows furrowed slightly, and her beautiful eyes flashed with unease.

Shen Zishan looked at Ma Aning, sighed helplessly, and said, "Aning, to be honest, I really don't know what to do now."

However, the foreman gave me a suggestion today. He told me to pretend that I accidentally broke my leg when a machine ran over me while I was working at the factory.

He also told me that his sister happened to be a doctor at the hospital and could help me get a two-day hospital stay certificate, as long as I pretended to be convincing enough.

After he finished speaking, he nervously observed Ma Aning's reaction.

Upon hearing this, Ma Aning's heart tightened, and a deep worry appeared on her face: "This...can this really work? What if we get caught?"

She unconsciously placed her hands on her slightly protruding belly, as if worried about the negative impact this risky plan might have on her unborn child.

However, Shen Zishan gently patted Ma Aning's shoulder and softly comforted her, "Wife, don't worry too much! Just stay home and take good care of yourself during your pregnancy. Leave everything else to me. Trust me, everything will be fine."

As he spoke, he carefully helped Ma Aning up and slowly walked her outside.

When they arrived at the dining table, the others were already sitting there waiting. Seeing Mr. and Mrs. Shen Zishan finally appear, Chen Yong warmly invited them to take their seats.

Shen Junping noticed there were no eggs on the table. "Grandma, you promised we'd have eggs for dinner."

“Eat properly. You already had eggs for lunch. Why do you want to eat them again for dinner? An egg costs 5 cents. How can you be so inconsiderate?”

Seeing the atmosphere at home these past two days, and seeing how clueless his son was, Shen Zijing unconsciously started yelling at him.

Qian Danu felt sorry for the children again. "Why are you scolding them? I promised at noon that I would fry an egg for each of them tonight. Pingping, An'an, Lele, don't cry. Grandma will go fry an egg for you now."

After saying that, he stood up and looked at Ma Aning, who was sitting to the side.

"Mom, what's wrong? Did you see that my wife's belly is too big? There are children, so my wife should be pregnant too?" Shen Zishan said with a grin.

Upon hearing this, Qian Daniu flew into a rage and was about to launch into a tirade when she was interrupted by a light cough from Chen Zhongqing.

Henqing said calmly, "That's only right. Aning's belly is so big now, she really needs to eat more good food to nourish her body."

Although Qian Danu was very unwilling, she still grumbled and walked towards the kitchen because of her pride.

A moment later, she brought out a plate of fragrant fried eggs and called out impatiently, "Here they are! Grandma has fried the eggs. One for each of you, and eat them properly!"

As she spoke, she deliberately picked out the worst-looking and smallest egg and placed it heavily in front of Ma Aning.

Qian Ahua, standing to the side, was so tempted by the bright yellow eggs that her mouth was practically watering.

When she saw that each of her older brother's two children had an egg, she immediately felt extremely resentful.

She couldn't help but complain, "Mom, look, my eldest brother's two children each get an egg, but my family only has one child at home, and we only get one egg. Aren't we being treated unfairly?"

Meanwhile, Lin Meimei, who was sitting on the other side, only slightly raised her eyelids to glance at her sister-in-law's words, which had actually involved her own family, before continuing to eat her rice, as if she was already used to such arguments.

Time slipped by quietly, and two whole days passed peacefully and unhurriedly.
