Chapter 34 Parents Called In
Teacher Yao didn't say anything more to her. Her gaze fell on her roommate in the next bed, and then she looked at everyone in the dormitory again.
"Alright, I got it. You stay here while I see who stole it."
He walked to the door with his hands behind his back, then casually pointed to the person near the door and window, "Classmate, come out with me first."
The man paused for a moment, then quickly replied "Oh," put on his shoes, and followed him outside.
The dormitory was eerily quiet; the sound of everyone breathing was exceptionally clear.
A short while later, the first girl who had been called out returned.
Everyone quickly gathered around, "Fangfang, how did it go? What did the teacher ask you?"
Fangfang simply shook her head, looked up at her roommate who shared a bed with her, and said, "Xiaoting, the teacher wants to see you."
Xiaoting nodded, put on her shoes, and walked outside.
After she returned, she called the two students in the upper bunks out as well.
Shen Xuewei glanced at it, put down the book in her hand, and guessed that her name would be called soon.
She got out of bed and Zhong Shiqi and another person were called over earlier. After them, it was her turn.
Sure enough, after the person in the lower bunk returned, they knocked on her mosquito net: "Weiwei, Teacher Yao wants you to go out."
"Okay, I'll go down now."
She put on her coat, climbed out of bed, put on her shoes, and went outside.
Teacher Yao is in the corner at the very edge of the floor.
When Shen Xuewei reached him, she looked up and greeted him with a smile, "Hello, Teacher Yao."
Her expression was calm, without the slightest hint of panic, just like any other day.
What a joke, what does she have to be afraid of?
If you have a clear conscience, you have nothing to fear.
Since she didn't steal the items, she wasn't flustered at all.
When Teacher Yao saw her standing in front of her, she slowly nodded, her eyes softening for a moment before turning sharp.
If a student with a guilty conscience stood in front of him, he might just give himself away at that moment.
Elementary school students, of course, don't have the same mental fortitude as adults. Coupled with their natural fear of teachers, if a teacher speaks sternly or gives them a sharp look, they'll probably spill everything.
Teacher Yao asked a few questions back and forth.
Do you know who stole it? Did you notice anyone acting suspiciously? Then they asked when you left the dorm today, who you were with, and so on...
After asking a few questions, he waved for Shen Xuewei to go back to her dormitory and asked her to call the person in the next bed over.
After talking to the girl in the next bed, she took off her shoes and climbed back into bed.
The book she hadn't finished reading was lying to the side, but she had no interest in picking it up again. Instead, she took out seven or eight notebooks from her schoolbag...
Teacher Yao questioned everyone in the dormitory.
Afterwards, Teacher Yao handed the meal tickets and money to Feng Jinfeng, telling her to be careful in the future and to keep them with her at all times so they wouldn't be stolen again.
Feng Jinfeng went from crying to laughing, nodding vigorously in agreement.
"I understand, thank you, Teacher Yao."
Teacher Yao waved her hand and left the dormitory with her hands behind her back.
The people in the dormitory had strange expressions as they looked down at a certain person with disdain and rejection in their eyes.
The quiet dormitory was gradually filled with murmurs.
"I was wondering why you were acting like such a kind and understanding classmate. Turns out you were just feeling guilty."
The thin girl, already hidden under the covers, didn't dare to peek out and was sobbing softly.
Having recovered her valuables, Feng Jinfeng glared at her with a mixture of anger and impatience, and said resentfully:
"Why are you crying? How dare you cry? We're such good friends, I even treated you to bread, and you stole my money! We're done, you're not allowed to talk to me again!"
The farce finally ended. After turning off the lights, Shen Xuewei glanced at the person who was still sobbing, sighed, and shook her head.
The girl's name was Yu Jindi. Shen Xuewei didn't know her family situation, but judging from the fact that she only bought five meal tickets from her homeroom teacher every week and two sets of clothes at school, which she wore repeatedly, her family was probably not well-off.
After learning that someone in the dormitory had been robbed of money, she and Wu Yuhong vaguely guessed that she was the culprit.
She had left her pen in her dorm room, and Wu Yuhong specially accompanied her back to the dorm to retrieve it.
Before I even got close to the dormitory, I saw a head sticking out of the secondary window above the dormitory door.
The two quickly hid on the stairs, peeked out, and discovered that the person climbing out of the secondary window was...it was Yu Jindi.
Yu Jindi was three years older than Shen Xuewei, but only a little taller. She was very thin and had a flat head.
She was probably the only one in the entire dormitory who could barely climb in and out through the secondary window...
After her theft was discovered by the other students in the dormitory, most of them began to subtly ostracize her.
Even if someone in the dorm loses something the next time, they will subconsciously suspect her.
Having suffered such treatment, she became increasingly taciturn and silent, and her previously good grades plummeted.
Shen Xuewei was not affected by this incident. She ate, drank, and studied as usual, but added two more locks to her suitcase.
There were three locks in total, securing the box tightly.
After the midterm exams, many students had their parents called in.
Ye Meiling is one of them.
Unlike her lively and cheerful demeanor in front of her classmates, Ye Meiling is very quiet and reserved in front of her parents.
As soon as Ye Meiling left the office, her mother began to berate her.
"Look at you, you're already in fourth grade, how come your grades are still so bad? If you put in half the effort of your brother, your grades wouldn't be this bad. Are you mute? Why don't you say anything?"
Ye Meiling's mother became increasingly angry as she spoke, and reached out to pinch her. "I'm asking you a question. How can you be so ill-mannered? Is this how your old grandmother always teaches you?"
Ye Meiling finally reacted, her eyes red as she glared at her: "You're not allowed to talk about Grandma like that. You never care about me, you only care about my brother. What right do you have to talk to me like that? What business is it of yours how my grades are?"
Ye Meiling's mother flew into a rage, "Is this how you talk to your mother? I've fed and clothed you and provided for your education, and you think I've done anything wrong? You're just not as good as your brother, can't I even say a few words to you?"
"You've really been corrupted by your grandma. If I hadn't happened to come back this time, you and your grandma would have tried to brush me off again, wouldn't they?"
"Say what you will, but I didn't ask you to come to school, and you don't need to come in the future!"
Ye Meiling's eyes were filled with tears, but she kept them up to prevent them from falling.
Ye Meiling's mother sneered, "I'm your mother! If you hadn't crawled out of my belly, who would care about you?"
...
Shen Xuewei and the other two stood guard outside the classroom, watching from a distance as the two started arguing outside the office.
Wu Yuhong asked worriedly, "Should we go over there? Mei Ling looks like she's about to cry?"
Zhong Shiqi hesitated, "Let's not go. That's Mei Ling's mother. If her mother scolds her, we can't get involved..."
Shen Xuewei didn't say anything, but returned to her seat, took the English homework she had collected earlier, and went to the teacher's office.
As she passed by the two women, she paused and said to Ye Meiling's mother, "Auntie, the bell for class is about to ring. The class monitor said Meiling should hurry back to the classroom."
Ye Meiling's mother paused for a moment, then said, "Oh, okay."
She looked at Ye Meiling, her expression somewhat impatient, and said, "Did you hear me? Go back and study properly. I'm leaving in a couple of days. Don't let me hear about you being called to school by the teacher again. I can't bear the shame of that."
Ye Meiling lowered her head, turned around, and ran straight to the classroom.
