Jiang Qiao gave a wry smile. "I'm in this situation because I'm forced into it. Let's hurry up and get there, otherwise things will get difficult once it's light."
As agreed beforehand, Jiang Qiao and Zhang Meixin went into hiding, and Zhang Erhu went to meet them in person.
At the designated location, he saw a man and a woman. He had seen the woman before during a mission, but he didn't know her name. As for the other woman, he had never seen her before.
Since he had an acquaintance there, Zhang Erhu was truly unreserved. He had been exploited by the other party before, so this time, he was going to vent his anger personally.
"Where is the person? Didn't they say the person had been caught?"
Zhang Erhu snorted coldly, "It's true that we caught them, but we can't just run around for nothing, can we? We haven't received any activity funds for more than half a year, and we're almost starving."
Furthermore, what exactly is wrong with our health? Why is the medicine you gave us having no effect at all? Our bodies are getting weaker every day. Shouldn't you give us an explanation?
The woman looked Zhang Erhu up and down, her scrutiny evident in her eyes.
"Regarding your funding issue, you can ask your superiors for help; that's something we can't resolve. However, we can give you some money to help you get through this difficult time temporarily."
As for the medicine not working, I can't answer that question right now. It's probably because there hasn't been enough time. You need to continue taking it for it to be effective.
"Where are they? I need to take them away immediately—"
Zhang Erhu carried his rogue spirit to the extreme: "You think we can just keep taking it? What if the medicine doesn't work? Are we just supposed to watch ourselves die? I'm not going to do something so stupid."
Since you gave me this medicine, I'll go with you. Whatever you eat, I'll eat. If we're going to die, we'll all die together. Don't try to fool us. Do you really think we don't know anything?
"I heard your lab has been destroyed. You were probably researching the antidote, weren't you?"
The man next to the woman was furious and shouted, "Stop talking nonsense! Bring her out right now! Don't you know that disobeying military orders means death!"
Zhang Erhu snorted coldly, "Don't try to scare me. I'm not falling for your tricks. If you don't agree to my conditions, you can forget about taking this person away."
Also, I might as well tell you something: I've already poisoned that woman, and I have the antidote. So, if you don't take me with you, you might end up taking back a corpse.
"Anyway, you guys figure it out. I just don't want to die. This whole thing started because of you, and you're responsible for the aftermath. Don't give me any of that 'antidote' nonsense. We both know what's going on. Don't try to fool me with that."
The man was so angry he wanted to point his weapon directly at Zhang Erhu's head, but the woman stopped him.
"Okay, I agree to your conditions, but you also need to ensure the safety of the hostage. Remember, we can only be okay if we are okay. We're all in this together. Hurry up and bring the hostage over. You, take out some of your money and tickets and give them to him."
Zhang Erhu, remember this: don't try to trick us, or you'll regret it.
Zhang Erhu nodded and bowed, saying, "That's right, I knew you were a sensible person. Don't worry, I can't run away. I want to live a few more years. I won't make things difficult for myself, much less for you."
You have what I need. If we cooperate, it'll be good for everyone, right? Wait, I'll be right back—"
After Zhang Erhu left, the man asked in a low voice, "What if he ran away?"
The woman snorted, "I know who he is, where he works, and where he lives. He may run away, but he can't hide."
We just happen to be short of test subjects, and his arrival makes things easier for us.
When Zhang Erhu brought Jiang Qiao over, the woman specifically took out a photo to compare.
He nodded in satisfaction. "It's her. Take her away."
Jiang Qiao had something stuffed in her mouth and tried to scream at the woman in front of her, but no one paid any attention to her.
She saw the woman and the man, but she didn't recognize them, especially their age. They didn't seem to be the old woman they were looking for. Now she suspected that they were the old woman's subordinates.
The man hoisted Jiang Qiao up and headed straight outside. A truck was parked by the roadside, and there was a quilt in the cargo bed. Jiang Qiao was pinned down underneath it. As for where the truck was going, Jiang Qiao had no idea.
Zhang Erhu wasn't much better off than Jiang Qiao; he was tied up, blindfolded, gagged, and put in a sack.
Zhang Erhu never expected that the other party was so wary of him. Now that he thinks about it, he regrets it. How could they have been so stupid? They believed whatever the other party said. Weren't they just asking to die?
Now, if anyone has something to complain about, it's their own stupidity and greed. If it weren't for the claim of longevity and health, they wouldn't have obediently drunk it.
He sighed inwardly, wondering what would happen next.
Unfortunately, he couldn't talk to Jiang Qiao. There was also a guard sitting over there, who was quite clever, much smarter than him. He was afraid they would run away halfway.
Jiang Qiao kicked the blanket hard, hoping that person would take the thing away; the sour and foul smell was unbearable.
"Behave yourselves, or I'll blow your lives out."
Jiang Qiao didn't believe the other party would really kill her. If it were that simple, they could have done it in the woods. So, she wasn't afraid of their threats and continued kicking the blanket covering her head.
The man was clearly getting impatient with Jiang Qiao, and he pulled back the covers. "What do you want to do? Behave yourself."
Jiang Qiao gestured to the blanket in his hand, then lifted the thing stuffed in her mouth.
"You have something to say?"
Jiang Qiao nodded. The man hesitated for a moment, looked behind him, and then removed the thing that Jiang Qiao had stuffed into her mouth.
Jiang Qiao was finally able to catch her breath. "It suffocated me—"
The man was about to shove the thing back into Jiang Qiao's hands, but Jiang Qiao turned her head away and refused to cooperate. "You'd better not put this thing back in. If you keep doing this, I'll either be killed by you or suffocated by the smell of this stuff. Where did you find this tattered blanket? Who used it? It's so dirty."
"Don't worry, I won't call for help. Things have come to this point; if I did, you'd probably come at me with your weapon right away. I'm not stupid. But you have to promise not to kill me, and then we can talk things over."
The man looked Jiang Qiao up and down. This was different from the information he had gathered. The report said that this woman was very capable and brave. She seemed quite different from the one in front of him.
"Aren't you fearless of death?"
Jiang Qiao snorted, "Big brother, I'm a human being. Everyone is afraid of death. Who isn't afraid of death? How old am I? My wonderful life hasn't even started yet. Why would I be so desperate as to want to die?"
Anyone can die, but I don't want to. What's wrong with me? Why talk about death? I'm terrified of death. Don't mention that word again.
The man had his doubts, but his mouth moved faster than his brain: "Then why are you getting involved? If it weren't for you, we wouldn't be causing you trouble."
