Jiang Qiao first paid for a week's worth of food and lodging, and then took out a bag of peach shortbread.
"Auntie, this is for the children at home. I came in a hurry and didn't bring any gifts. Also, I'll eat whatever you're eating. Don't prepare anything special for me, otherwise I'll really feel embarrassed to stay."
The young girl was capable and straightforward, so Aunt Liu readily agreed, "Alright, little girl, come back to the house with me and rest for a while. The adults are tired from the journey, let alone you, a child."
Jiang Qiao couldn't rest yet. She hadn't even seen the person. After putting things away, she came over to keep Aunt Liu company while she washed clothes and chatted about the prisoners.
“They’re not all inside all the time. They have to work every day. What do you think they’re all locked up and then treated like royalty?”
They have to do labor. These people should all be back eating and resting now. They'll be able to come out and work this afternoon; the prison has its own farm.
Seeing that the other person seemed quite sensible, Jiang Qiao casually asked, "Who would have thought that her husband was cooking for the prisoners inside?"
"By the way, are there any time restrictions for their visits?"
Aunt Liu was indeed very knowledgeable. "Of course, there will be an opportunity to visit this afternoon."
"This afternoon? I saw someone go in?"
Aunt Liu chuckled. "You're obviously inexperienced, kid. You just waited inside the house when you went in."
Suddenly, a little girl's crying came from inside the house. Aunt Liu didn't even bother with the clothes she was washing. She hurriedly dropped them and ran into the house without even washing her hands.
Jiang Qiao followed her into the house. A little girl, about seven or eight years old, was lying on the kang (a heated brick bed). Her face was sallow and she was as thin as a sheet of paper.
"Mom, I need to pee."
When Jiang Qiao saw Aunt Liu carrying the little girl out, she was stunned. Normally, a child that big should be able to get down and walk on her own, but when she saw the little girl's legs, she suddenly realized something.
I'm afraid this child has a problem with his legs and can't walk independently.
When Aunt Liu returned with the child, Jiang Qiao finally asked the question that had been bothering her.
"Oh, don't even mention it. My child suddenly got sick before. It wasn't anything serious, just some redness and swelling on her legs. We put some gentian violet on them, but it didn't help. We took her to the doctor, but they couldn't figure out what was wrong. They just said it was an insect bite. My little girl was walking perfectly fine before, but now she can't even walk."
When talking about her child's illness, Aunt Liu burst into tears. "How could my perfectly healthy child suddenly become so ill?"
She used to have some flesh on her bones, but now she's barely clinging to life. As her mother, her heart is in turmoil, and she doesn't know what to do.
Jiang Qiao went up to check on her, then looked at Aunt Liu with a serious expression. "Auntie, your daughter Yadan's illness needs to be treated quickly, otherwise her life will be in danger. I'm not exaggerating, it's true. I learned medicine from my grandfather and mother."
Upon hearing Jiang Qiao's words, Aunt Liu seemed to see a glimmer of hope and grabbed Jiang Qiao's hand tightly.
"Girl, girl, I beg you, please save my Yadan. I'll do anything, even be your slave, just to save her life."
Aunt Liu wanted to kneel down before Jiang Qiao, but Jiang Qiao wouldn't allow it. "Auntie, please don't do this. If you keep doing this, I won't get treatment anymore."
Jiang Qiao examined the little girl carefully again, then took her pulse and hurriedly went to the room next door to fetch some things.
Fortunately, she had her own space; otherwise, even if she wanted to save the girl, she might not have been able to. Performing surgery at this time of year could have cost the girl her life if the sterilization wasn't done properly.
As Jiang Qiao gave her daughter an injection, Aunt Liu stared in disbelief. "This child carries this thing with her when she goes out?"
I really can't understand what these parents were thinking.
Jiang Qiao was truly disregarding everything else in order to save the girl; if she had stayed a few more days, she really would have died.
"Auntie, come and help me—"
She tightened the straps around the little girl's legs; not one leg was the problem, both were, and she needed to get the worm out quickly.
Aunt Liu dared not open her eyes to look at the knife in Jiang Qiao's hand. Now, she finally understood why the parents dared to let their child go on a long trip.
Although Jiang Qiao hadn't touched this thing in a long time, the feeling came naturally as soon as she got her hands on it. She was a little clumsy at first, but soon she was able to use it freely. She cut open the skin and found a black worm lying inside.
Jiang Qiao used tweezers to remove it, quickly disinfected and sutured the little girl's leg, and then did the other leg. When Jiang Qiao finished, Aunt Liu opened her eyes and saw what had been removed.
Although Ya Dan felt pain, she knew that they were treating her. She was already very upset that she couldn't walk independently for the past few days, so she endured the pain.
After Jiang Qiao finished bandaging the child, the little girl was covered in sweat from the pain.
"Okay, here, take your medicine—"
Jiang Qiao fed the little girl her medicine, then asked Aunt Liu to get rid of the two worms. She then packed up her tools.
Aunt Liu looked at Jiang Qiao in disbelief, "Girl, will our Ya Dan get better in the future?"
Jiang Qiao smiled and nodded, "Auntie, don't worry, the stitches will be removed in a couple of days. Luckily, my mother let me bring these things with me, otherwise, I really wouldn't be able to do anything."
Aunt Liu doesn't know how to describe her feelings. She did a good deed, but she never expected that good people would be rewarded. The other person saved her daughter's life. What a great favor that is!
"Honey, I'm home. How's the baby?!"
Liu Taixiang walked in excitedly, carrying a lunchbox.
When Aunt Liu saw her husband return, she excitedly grabbed Liu Taixiang's arm, "Dad, come and see!"
An emotional Aunt Liu pulled her husband into the house. When Liu Taixiang saw his daughter lying on the kang (a heated brick bed), he was still a little confused. The child was still lying on the kang, but her spirits seemed much better than before.
"Father, you're back?"
Liu Taixiang affectionately patted his daughter's head. "Ya Dan, are you feeling any better? Dad brought you something delicious today. There's meat in it, so we're having a special day. I also brought back some leftover vegetables for you to have a nice meal. How's it going? Do you have an appetite?"
The little girl smiled and nodded, "I'm hungry too, Dad, hurry up and give me something to eat."
When Jiang Qiao came in, she saw a scene of filial piety between father and son. The little girl took a bite and then fed her father a bite. Seeing this, she really did not save the wrong person.
"Dad, this is Jiang Qiao, the girl who saved our child."
Liu Taixiang had just heard from his wife about Jiang Qiao's efforts to treat their child's illness. The girl's illness had been weighing heavily on the couple's minds, and upon suddenly hearing that the child's condition was no longer a problem, Liu Taixiang almost wanted to rush over and kowtow to Jiang Qiao.
Aunt Liu stopped him. She didn't know what the young girl was doing in that room, and it wouldn't be convenient for her husband to go over there. When Jiang Qiao arrived, Liu Taixiang was so excited that he almost knelt down.
Who is Jiang Qiao? If the other party wants to kneel, how could she possibly let them?
"Uncle Liu, you flatter me. It just so happens that I know how to treat this illness. If it were something else, I wouldn't know how and I wouldn't be able to help. So, I feel that we are destined to meet. I appreciate your gratitude. Let's sit down and talk."
