Everyone sat down and looked at Jiang Qiao expectantly. "Little sister Qiao, have you been thinking about anything lately? We didn't get enough last time. How about we team up again and pull off another heist?"
Jiang Qiao chuckled, "You're saying we'll pull off another heist? It's like we're kidnappers."
Then he sighed and said, "I want to too, but I don't have any good connections. I can't do what I did before."
Think about it, if you guys make money, what if those who didn't find out and try something underhanded behind our backs? We'll be in deep trouble. Those are the kinds of people who skirt the law.
Miao Xin glanced at Jiang Qiao and said, "Little Jiang Qiao, you know how to play it safe. Well, let's continue to play it safe, but this time let's try something different."
Jiang Qiao smiled faintly and asked in return, "Does Brother Miao have any ideas?"
Miao Xin paused, blinked, and said, "Well—, I don't have any ideas. If I did, I would have already told everyone to do it. It's precisely because we don't have any ideas that we need to discuss it with you."
Jiang Qiao, tell me, do you have any plans? We can't just keep living like this forever, it's too boring.
I keep dreaming about our past, it's so exciting!
The others chimed in, "That's awesome! They made more money in just a few days than we do in a year. Where else can you find such a good deal?"
Jiang Qiao waved her hand, "Don't worry, there's always a way. Let's eat first, and we'll talk while we eat—"
This meal wasn't for nothing. Before, because of Ning Hao, she didn't know these people very well. But after this meal, Jiang Qiao's relationship with them improved considerably.
As soon as she got home, someone called her name outside. When she went out to look, she saw it was the postman. Jiang Qiao was overjoyed. Could it be that there was news about the letter she had mailed?
Upon receiving the letters, she found two. One was from the military, which she guessed was from Ning Hao. The other letter had a note attached that read, "No such person found." It would be a lie to say she wasn't disappointed.
Although she has changed her identity and is living a different life, she still wants to contact her family, at least to know if her older brother is still alive, and what happened to her father and nephew.
Deep down, she always hoped for a miracle. If she, a dead person, could come back to life, wouldn't a miracle happen to her father and nephew as well?
Seeing the returned letter, she was still disappointed. She gave a bitter smile. There are no miracles in this world. She had already been blessed by God and could not ask for anything more.
After thanking the postman, Jiang Qiao hurried back to her room to check Ning Hao's letter.
The letter was roughly divided into two parts: one part described his current situation and life, and the other part thanked her for the package she sent. These things proved very useful once he arrived at the army base.
When Grandpa Qiao finished preparing the medicinal herbs, he entered the room and saw Jiang Qiao sitting in a chair, lost in thought.
"Girl, what's wrong?"
Jiang Qiao shook her head. "It's nothing. I just received a letter from Brother Ning Hao, and I'm thinking about how to reply to him. He's doing well in the army."
"This kid, at least he knows to send a letter. Write him back later and tell him you're doing well here with me."
"Girl, I'm going to gather herbs tomorrow, do you want to come?"
"Yes, of course I went—"
Jiang Qiao's unhappy mood vanished, and she looked at Qiao Jie with bright, excited eyes that even the old man could sense.
After being cooped up at home for so long, she can finally go out for some fresh air.
The old man had just finished explaining what to bring when Song Lianfeng excitedly ran in, breathless.
"Uncle Joe, I have some good news for you—"
Grandpa Qiao was sweating bullets for Song Lianfeng, fearing she might suffocate before she could catch her breath.
"Hey, how old are you? Why are you running like a young man? Wait until you're out of breath—"
Jiang Qiao quickly got up and poured Song Lianfeng a glass of water. After drinking the water, Song Lianfeng finally caught her breath.
Before he even opened his mouth, a smile was already written all over his face. "Uncle Qiao, I have some good news for you. Our neighborhood is going to open a community canteen, and everyone is signing up. They say there will be plenty of food, and you can eat whatever you want. Is your family going to sign up? If you want to, hurry up and sign up before it's too late."
Not to mention Qiao Jie, even Jiang Qiao looked at Song Lianfeng with surprise.
"What do you mean? Opening a cafeteria, and offering free meals? Are you kidding me?"
Song Lianfeng slapped her forehead. "I forgot to mention something. If we sign up, we have to send all the food from home over. We won't have to go and queue up to buy food anymore. Someone will buy it for us. We can just bring our stomachs and eat as much as we want. Where else can we find such a good deal?"
Qiao Jie shook his head incredulously. "A good thing? I don't think so. Our food rations are limited. You can eat as much as you want, but who will fill the gap once it's gone?"
Song Lianfeng anxiously advised, "Old man, why do you care so much? This is an order from above. If there are any problems, they will naturally find a way. Why are you worrying about it? As long as you can eat your fill, that's all that matters."
Besides, we should respond to and support their work, right? Everyone else has signed up, so you shouldn't hesitate either.
After being persuaded by Song Lianfeng, Qiao Jie hesitated for a moment. "That's true, Qiao'er, why don't we sign up?"
After listening to what Song Lianfeng said, Jiang Qiao pondered the matter, her brows furrowed tightly. When she heard the old man ask this question, she hesitated for a while before speaking.
“Grandpa Qiao, look, it’s just the two of us in our family. You’re always going out and don’t eat at home. I don’t eat much either. It’s not worth it for our family to join. Why don’t we wait and see how the canteen is doing?”
It wasn't that she didn't want to participate in this so-called large cafeteria, but rather that she found it somewhat unbelievable.
Having participated, one can eat to one's heart's content in the future. This is something that is unlikely to be achieved in any given time, given the limited yield of this area. Unless agriculture becomes highly developed and production increases, this might be possible.
However, the new government has only been established for a few years, and its current strength is simply not up to that level.
Song Lianfeng stared anxiously at Jiang Qiao, "You child, why are you scheming about this? This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Don't hesitate, hurry up and sign up."
I need to go back and get some things. You guys figure it out yourselves. I'm leaving.
Song Lianfeng's enthusiasm and initiative inspired Qiao Jie. Everyone was able to have enough to eat, which was also his wish, and he wanted to respond to the call as well.
The old man discussed this matter with Jiang Qiao again, since everyone else had participated but their family hadn't, making them seem out of place.
Jiang Qiao still firmly shook her head. "Grandpa Qiao, listen to me. We're not in a hurry. If it really can be done as Auntie San said, then it's only a matter of time before we participate. There's no need to rush it."
I think we're not the only ones hesitating; let's wait and see.
The old man sighed, "Alright, then Grandpa will listen to you. If it really works, then you can't stop me anymore. Hurry up and go cook, we need to go up the mountain to collect herbs early tomorrow morning."
