Chapter 56: Talking about Mother-in-law being arrested
The old lady pointed at the fish in her bucket and asked, "Are you selling this fish? I can buy it. My daughter-in-law gave birth yesterday and has no milk. I want to try making some fish soup."
Su Nuan breathed a sigh of relief, as long as it wasn't something weird. She reached into the bucket and took out a crucian carp the size of two palms from the space.
"This crucian carp is for you. I don't like the bones and don't want to eat it."
The old lady was flattered and quickly held the crucian carp in her arms. This fish is the best for producing milk, so it doesn’t matter how many bones it has.
She pulled out a jade hairpin of ordinary quality from her patched collar and asked, "Can I use this to exchange my job?"
Su Nuan shook her head, "I already said I gave it to you, no need to change it."
The old lady shook her head and said, "No, my daughter-in-law is also stubborn and refuses to take advantage of others. This is her dowry. I heard it is her heirloom."
Seeing that she didn't want to take the fish, Su Nuan simply took the hairpin and said, "Okay, I'll give it to you when I have crucian carp. If you can't catch it, there's nothing I can do."
The old lady opened her mouth to refuse, but for the sake of her daughter-in-law, she nodded and said, "Thank you."
Watching the old lady leave, Su Nuan said to herself, "There are still good people out there."
After all, the world is so big, with both good and bad sides, it will not develop towards only one extreme.
Su Nuan looked at the hairpin again and again. It was carved with a phoenix, and there was a touch of bright red in the eyes. Maybe it was because of this bright red that it became a family heirloom.
She put the hairpin into the space, walked back to the carriage and put down the bucket.
Xue asked in surprise, "You went into the water?"
Su Nuan shook her head. "No, I just threw the bucket in to draw water, and when I pulled it out, there were two more fish."
After saying this, they attracted countless envious and jealous eyes, and then they looked towards the lake with anticipation, hoping that their family members could also catch some fish.
Su Nuan was no longer surprised by such looks. She said, "Let's stew one with pickles and boil the other plain. My husband and grandmother prefer a light meal."
Xue felt warm in her heart. This daughter-in-law was so nice. She took good care of everyone along the way.
People can pretend to be kind, but that is limited in time. Su Nuan has been the same from the beginning to the end. She can be really fierce, but she is absolutely gentle to her family.
Su Nuan cleaned the fish swiftly and handed the cooking over to Xue, who then carried the backpack and walked towards the wasteland nearby.
Now that I have the space spirit to help with detection, I just need to walk back and forth inside.
Not long after walking, the space spirit said, "Hey, there are a lot of mushrooms here."
Su Nuan was stunned and looked at the surrounding grass blankly. The grass here was quite interesting, with big heads everywhere. How could there be mushrooms in such a place?
She bent down and pulled away the weeds, and sure enough, she saw a mushroom as big as a fist, white in color, and like a meatball.
Su Nuan asked, "What kind of mushroom is this? Is it really edible?"
The space spirit replied, "These are delicious mushrooms found on the grasslands. Perhaps the climate here is similar to that of the grasslands."
Su Nuan didn't know much about the country's geographical location and climate, she just felt it was quite complicated.
Anyway, since the space spirit says it’s edible, then it must be edible.
Su Nuan picked a basket of mushrooms, poured them out when she returned, and went to pick more.
Some smart wives saw Su Nuan picking mushrooms, and they also went to look for her quietly, but no one dared to follow Su Nuan.
Su Nuan didn't care about them following her. This was not her home. If people were willing to work hard, they should get something in return.
She asked herself, "Can these mushrooms be grown?"
The space spirit replied: "Not now, but when you have more energy in the future, you can unlock a larger space. You can store the soil at the roots of the mushrooms in the space, and then plant them again in the future."
Su Nuan's eyes lit up. This was a good idea. She immediately started to collect a lot of soil and mushrooms.
Unfortunately, she didn't find any other wild vegetables, and they were so sparse that she didn't want to dig them up.
When we returned to the carriage the day before dark, a tent had been set up and two charcoal stoves were being used to cook.
Su Nuan asked, "Mom, I see the weather is very dry out here. Can we hang these mushrooms outside the carriage to dry?"
Xue shook her head. "I don't know either. The mushrooms are bigger than fists. How many days will it take?"
The old lady smiled and said, "It's possible. I see that although the weather is cold, the wind is quite strong. It will be almost done in a few days."
Su Nuan nodded, went to get a hemp rope, strung the mushrooms together and hung them on the carriage.
Air-drying overnight should increase the toughness of the mushrooms so that they won't fall off due to bumps during travel.
Xue grabbed a handful of dried fruits and handed them to Su Nuan, "Take them and eat them. I've fried them."
Su Nuan giggled and took it. There were pine nuts, hazelnuts and hairy chestnuts.
This hairy chestnut is very small, slightly larger than a peanut. When you bite it open, the kernel inside is actually a little crispy and sweet.
"Mom, aren't these chestnuts soft and sticky? How come they're crispy and sweet?"
Xue smiled and said, "Put these chestnuts in water and boil it for a while, then take them out and put them in cold water. They are crispy and sweet when you eat them, and they become soft and sticky when you boil them for a long time."
Su Nuan praised: "Mom knows a lot, it's delicious."
Mrs. Xue smiled awkwardly, "How could I know so much? It's your grandmother who told me that young people with good teeth don't like to eat anything too powdery. This kind of crispy and sweet food is just right."
Su Nuan raised her eyebrows in surprise. It turned out that people’s hearts are mutual.
But she soon thought of her past life and felt a little ashamed. This sentence did not suit her very well.
Seeing that he didn't want to eat anymore, Xue asked, "Don't you like it?"
Su Nuan shook her head, "I like it, but I didn't expect grandma to have so many things."
Xue immediately began to tell the story with great excitement.
"You don't know, your grandmother disliked me when I married your father-in-law."
"I was quite thin at that time, and I looked like a lady from a wealthy family, fragile and vulnerable."
Su Nuan nodded in understanding, "The generals probably wouldn't like a woman like this."
Xue smiled and said, "That's right, but she doesn't know that I'm so weak because I'm hungry."
"My mother said that women need to be gentle and delicate to be liked by their mother-in-law, but I ended up being completely disliked."
Su Nuan asked curiously, "How did grandma change her mind?"
Xue sighed, "When I got married, your grandmother didn't set any rules for me, but her only requirement was that I walk in the yard for two hours every day."
Su Nuan raised an eyebrow, "This shouldn't be difficult, the Marquis' Mansion is quite large, and it will take almost two hours to walk around it twice."
Xue shook her head. "It's not easy. Because of my mother's instructions, I dare not eat too much. Every meal is only half a bowl of rice. I am almost starving to death."
Su Nuan chuckled. She had recently gotten to know her mother-in-law's appetite. She needed at least two bowls of rice for a meal to feel full. This time, she only had half a bowl. It would take her two and a half minutes, let alone two hours.
The old lady seemed to hear what they were saying. She came out of the car and said, "You guys are having a great time chatting. I want to listen too."
Xue's whole body froze. It was over. She had been caught red-handed talking about her mother-in-law behind her back and was going to die.
